Slayer vs mayhem festThis is a very unique and special case for When metal Bands Fight because shots were fired at the metal genre by Warped Tour/Mayhem Fest founder Kevin Lyman. It’s no secret that the Metal genre does not do as huge of numbers as it may have in the 1980’s and 90’s, but that’s because most Americans are wrapped in whatever is the hot flavor of the month. I have been flying the flag for metal since the day I was born and I will till the day I die. Kerry King, the legendary guitarist of Slayer also feels the same way that I do and he’s been flying the flag for a hell of a lot longer than I have and he’s also been doing his best repping the genre for years. Lyman in an interview fired this shot at the metal genre as Loudwire.com reported, “Recently, co-founder Kevin Lyman spoke about the issues surrounding the booking of the metal festival. He commented in an interview that the metal genre was becoming “gray, bald, and fat” while addressing the difficulty in booking metal festivals and calling out some of the top billed acts for not cutting any financial slack to help move the scene forward.” It wouldn’t take long for Kerry King to fire a shot back at the festival founder as King said, “It’s a very generalizing statement [from Lyman] and it basically throws his tour under the bus. That’s just … that’s not even Business 101. That’s just insane.” I have to agree with Kerry on that point because if you are trying to get people to go to your festival, the last thing you want to do is do the genre.

Gary Holt made the comment that usually there’s the Main Stage, a second stage, a third stage, and then that piece of s–t record stage…now what they’re calling a second stage is at best a fourth stage and they’re wondering why people aren’t showing up. I think they waited too long and think all the talent that could have been on this took gigs in Europe. Because there’s nobody here touring. It’s easy to fill these stages but I guess they wanted a different price point, take away the second and third stage, which I think had a lot of value. To me a second stage headliner is Anthrax, Machine Head…Whoever booked this made a gigantic error.” During the interview Kerry would go on to say that the festival was, “a glorified Slayer show” and he has the right to say that because Slayer sold out the Eagles Ballroom in Milwaukee with just Suicidal Tendencies and Exodus. Then you look at the attendance of the Mayhem Fest stop at the same venue and they couldn’t sell it out. The last comment he would go on to make was, “I understand it from a fan’s perspective. I wouldn’t spend money to come to this either.” He went on to give a bold statement as he told the press that not only is this the last time Slayer will play Mayhem, but it may be the last Mayhem Fest ever. When asked about what Kerry said, Lyman replied, “He took offense to something I said and is voicing his opinion. All good with me.” In the past, Mayhem Fest has had some amazing lineups with 2009’s being my favorite one and they have had some pretty decent lineups over the years, but they definitely dropped the ball this year. After reading what Kerry had to say, what opinion do you have? What do you think of the current state of metal?
