the gunmanThere was a trend for a little while in Hollywood where you take stars from the past and you put them in bad ass action roles. They did it for Liam Neeson and Denzel Washington and now you can add Sean Penn (I Am Sam) to that list. In today’s Ass Whoopin Wednesday film, The Gunman, Penn plays a gunman on a mercenary assassination squad that is sent into the Congo in 2006 to assassinate the minster of mining. After the job was successful, he is forced to leave the country and everything he loves behind him. Now it’s eight years later and he is back in the Congo for some humanitarian help, but his past comes back to haunt him as someone is trying to kill Jim for the fact that he holds way too much information that could implicate some very important people. The film also stars Javier Bardem (No Country For Old Men) as Felix, Jasmine Trinca (The Son’s Room) as Annie, Ray Winstone (The Departed) as Stanley, Mark Rylance (Blitz) as Cox, Idris Elba (Thor) as Barnes, Peter Franzén (Ambush) as Reiniger, Daniel Adegboyega (Skyfall) as Bryson, and the film was directed by Pierre Morel (Taken). Now let’s check out some stats before we get into the review of the film.

the-gunman-clip-01_medEvery once in a while, we add the sexual conquest to the list of stats when there is one and there was one in this film. Sean Penn’s character Jim has 18 1/2 kills and there is a half there because a Bull helps finish off one of his victims. He has no origin story in this film other than the fact that he is a mercenary that has kept files and documents on all his missions. He does have a love interest and not only does she get hurt, but she gets kidnapped and some of his friends are murdered as well in the film. The bog boss is defeated, but you have to see how it’s done because the whole sequence is pretty awesome to watch. I have been waiting to see this film for some time after I found out that Sean Penn and the director of Taken were involved in this film. Is the film better than Taken, I wouldn’t necessarily say that because they are two completely different films even though it’s the same kind of genre. If you are a fan of action films then I think this is one that you should enjoy because they add a certain variable to the story that makes our hero that much more interesting. The action scenes are good and some the settings are cool because the cinematography is amazing as well. Sean Penn is also a master who is just absolutely intense when it comes to the roles he plays on screen. It’ll be interesting to see what he takes on next in his career. I am going to give The Gunman an B+ for a final grade, check it out where ever you get your films (i.e. Vudu, Redbox, etc.).
