ActOfDefiance-BirthAndTheBurialYou may just be wondering exactly who in the heck Act Of Defiance is, but if you are a true metal head then you already know who they are. Back in February of 2015, Chris Broderick and Shawn Drover shocked the metal community when both men exited thrash metal legends Megadeth. The two immediately announced that they had a new venture called Act of Defiance which also featured former Shadows Fall guitarist Matt Bachand (Bass) and former Scar The Martyr vocalist Henry Derrick Bonner. Together the four of them would record their debut album Birth And The Burial which is being released everywhere August 21, 2015 via Metal Blade Records. The band unleashed the album online for fans to hear early of it’s release and Drover comments, “We are all so proud for everybody to finally be able to hear Birth and the Burial streaming in its entirety. We worked extremely hard to make the best heavy metal record we could and we are all beyond excited for you to sink your teeth into this record. We said from the get-go, this record is 100 percent uncompromising heavy metal, and now you can hear for yourselves!” Chris Broderick added to the conversation saying, “We spent a lot of time and effort on Birth and the Burial to get it to sound as good as it possibly could, and we are not only excited for it’s release this Friday Aug. 21 and the fact that everyone can stream it, but also to announce that we will be heading out on tour to support it in October!!! It’s one thing to get a CD to sound great, but now we have to live up to that sound live as well, and I know from talking to Shawn, Henry, and Matt that we are going to bring it!!!”

Act-of-Defiance-630x4201. Throwback- This was the first track the band unleashed off of the record and it’s fierce. Drover commented on the track saying, “Throwback’ is not your average speed/thrash metal tune. The song is also pretty progressive at times with a lot of stopping and starting going into the bridge and they are all at different times, so we really had to memorize the count. I was really impressed with the way Chris wanted to write a little bit out of the box, shall we say. Chris also wrote all of the lyrics for the song, which were also impressive to me.” 5/5

2. Legion Of Lies– This is an all out heavy metal assault on the masses as the band gives you a clinic what Metal is. The track is both heavy and melodic at times, it’s crushing. This track has a black metal feel to it at times. 4.5/5

3. Thy Lord Belial– A fast and in your face track about the one and only Satan, but it’s the demon that appears in the Hebrew Bible. 4/5

4. Refrain And Refracture– A very clever track from the band that starts off with acoustic guitars, but don’t worry because they bring the energy as they raise the tempo. Drover told Loudwire.com, “Refrain and Re-Fracture’ is a great example of using musical dynamics in a heavy metal song. All of us in Act of Defiance have always been fans of cool acoustic/classical song intros before the metal assault kicks in, so when Chris presented this song to me I immediately loved the tune.” 5/5

5. Dead Stare– An absolute in your face thrash like song that would make Exodus proud as the sound is similar. You can also hear the familiar later years Megadeth guitar solo sound in the solo for this song. 4/5

act6. Disastrophe– I love Bonner’s vocals on this track as he kind of reminds me of a combination of Phil Anselmo and the Damageplan vocalist there. The song has more of that crushing, in your face metal sound we’ve been hearing all album long. 4/5

7. Poison Dream– The track begins with string arrangements and piano playing which is a little different before the band brings the thunder. This track is absolutely brutal, I cannot wait to hear this one live. 5/5

8. Obey The Fallen– The track begins with an eerie riff before the band kicks the tempo up. A rare track that features some clean singing by Bonner who sounds like Dave Mustaine at times. 4/5

9. Crimson Psalm– This track returns to the sonically fast paced, blazing metal that we love from a band of this caliber. This is metal at it’s best. 5/5

10. Birth And The Burial– The title track is the last track on the record and it starts off with one of my favorite things in the whole world and that is a sick bass line before the band comes in. 4.5/5

My Final Thoughts– I am super excited for a band like this to be releasing an album that teaches fans everywhere what real metal is all about. You should also be exicted that they are taking this metal madness on the road in the fall because I am ready for it. I am giving the album four stars out of five for a final grade.
