recTo try and spawn the next big thing for Hollywood, they will sometimes look to films that may have been big in other countries like The Ring franchise which was based off of the Japanese horror film Ringu. The same could be said for today’s film that I chose to review in the Spanish film [Rec] which ended up with an American version one year later in Quarantine. The film follows a reporter for a late night television show named Angela (Manuela Velasco) who is doing a report on firefighters and what they do at night. During the interview, they get an alarm and she follows them with her cameraman to the scene, but things are just a little weird. An old woman is going crazy and she proceeds to take a bite out of an officer and before they know all of them are trapped inside as the building is sealed off due to an contagious infection. The film also stars Ferran Terraza ([Rec] 2) as Manu, Jorge-Yamam Serrano (Diary Of A Nymphomaniac) as Polica Joven, Pablo Rosso ([Rec] 3: Genesis) as Pablo, David Vert (Diary Of A Nymphomaniac) as Alex, Vicente Gil (Tilt) as Polica Adulto, Carlos Vicente (Tad, The Lost Explorer) as Guilllem, and the film was directed by Jaume Balagueró (Fragile) and Paco Plaza ([Rec] 2).

rec 2If you love old Japanese martial arts films or Godzilla films where the lips are moving, but they’re not saying much, then you’ll love this one thanks to the overdubs. The films was done in Spain so obviously the original language of the film is Spanish so for American audiences to enjoy, they overdubbed the English right in. I Truly believe that I would have rather had the Spanish with English subtitles, but that shouldn’t deter you from watching the film. This is actually a really good film with some minor problems in it, but I like how the story unfolds. There is an infection that is spread through saliva so if you get bitten you are screwed, but it’s a man made infection which makes it more interesting. One thing that I found a little out there is that they try to mix black magic, demon possession, and stuff like that in the idea of how this was created. One of the other things is the woman you’ll notice in the end, where has she been and why has no one else in the building been aware of her all the time they lived there? Other than that, I have no other complaints as I enjoyed the film and I have to be honest with all of you. This was my first time watching any film in this series and as soon as I started watching, I immediately recognized the story. It’s a found footage film, so if you like those, then check this one out because it’s not too bad. There’s not a lot of the shaky camera because it’s a pro camera man filing all of it, but there are times when it’s batted away. I am going to give this film an B for a final grade.
