I am such a huge fan of what The Cure has done in their career for the music world because they’ve brought so much beauty from the dark with their instruments. I like to believe that the Deftones are a band that does a little of the same, but for this day and age. A couple of weeks ago, the band released their latest disc Gore and that is why I chose them for this week’s cover of the week. Back in 2004, for a series called MTV Icon, the band paid tribute to the legendary English group by performing the track If Only Tonight We Could Sleep which was off of The Cure’s Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me album. The track was taken from the special and it was included on the B-Sides and Rarities disc that the Deftones put out in 2005. The first part of the song is all instrumental and it sounds incredible and Chino Moreno does an amazing job vocally with the track as he channels his best Robert Smith vocals. The song also includes Chi Cheng on the track and it’s kind of sad listening knowing that he’s no longer here, but at least we have these recordings to remember him by. Check it out below:
