Eddie’s 31 Days Of Halloween 2016: Day 13: Seventh Moon (2008)

There are some films that you just look at the DVD cover art and you immediately want to see the film or just one name can do that trick too. Both of those instances rang true or me when I chose to watch Seventh Moon for today’s film. Amy Smart (Win a Date with Tad Hamilton!) and Tim Chiou (The New Adventures of Johnny Karate & Golden Delicious) are newlywed couple Melissa an Yul who decided it would be fun to go to Yul’s homeland of China for their honeymoon. While in China, they come across a festival known as the hungry ghost festival where sacrifices are made left in their honor. While continuing on their journey, they come across a town where that hungry ghost festival is actually a real thing. Noe the couple have to try and survive the night or it’s become sacrifices to the moon demons that lurk only during the seventh full moon. The film also stars Dennis Chan (The Man With The Iron Fists) as Ping, and the film was written and directed by Eduardo Sánchez (From Dusk Till Dawn: The Series). 

I want to start this part of the article by saying that I loved the idea of the film, but the execution was something entirely different. For most of the film, the camera work annoyed me cause it was so shaky and this wasn’t a found footage film. There was this one sequence in the beginning when they are being driven to where they want to go and the camera is obviously on the outside of the car cause you can see the suns reflection off of it and that annoyed me. I guess I can understand why they did it, but not my favorite thing. What I did like about some of the camera work is that when the moon demons show up, the camera is out of focus most of the time so you don’t really get to see what they look like until the end. The film gets really exciting when the chase begins because these guys are relentless and they do not give up. The look of the moon demons is pretty cool as well, they look like decrepit Chinese people with white corpse paint all over them. A lot of different countries are very superstitious and this is just a perfect one because it is scary as hell. The acting was very good in the film especially from Amy Smart and it was nice to see Dennis Chan in something other than the Kickboxer series. With all of that being said, I am going to go ahead and give the film an B+ for a final grade despite the shaky camera.
