freakshowThis week, I was trying to think of an album to cover for Album of the week seeing as we are getting close to our 200TH album. I wanted to cover another hair metal band considering it’s been a while since I covered an album from one of my favorite genres and I stumbled upon one you may not have expected me to cover. The name of the band is the Bulletboys and they hailed from Los Angeles, but there is an interesting tidbit about some of the members. Marq Torien (Vocals) is one of those guys that has been around the block when it comes to bands as he was once a guitarist in Ratt (before they were signed), Hawk, and King Kobra before taking over vocal duties for the Bulletboys. Mick Sweda (Guitar) and Lonnie Vincent (Bass) were in King Kobra before leaving to join Bulletboys along with Torien. Jimmy D’Anda (Drums) is the only member that auditioned for the band. The album I chose for you guys this week is the band’s sophomore effort Freakshow whcih believe it or not is the first album I ever received from them. I was apart of a Columbia House Records and I remember this was one of the cassettes I received as part of the deal they had then. In 1991, the album would peak at number 69 on The Billboard Top 200 charts and was produced by Ted Templeman (Van Halen, Captain Beefheart).

bulletboys-freakshow-back-cover-373811. Hell Yeah!– To get your blood pumping, they start with the bluesy Hell Yeah! to get you moving. 4/5

2. THC Groove– They keep the sleaze like bluesy like riffs going for this next track with a nice bass riff that drives the song. I think you can figure out what the lyrics are about to this one. 4/5

3. Thrill That Kills– This is definitely a harder edged track all about finding that Thrill that will probably kill you eventually. 4/5

4. Hang On St. Christopher– The band had a huge hit with this cover of the Tom Waits track. They definitely sleazed it up to their standards. 5/5

5. Talk To Your Daughter– This is another cover on the album of Chicago blues legend J.B. Lenoir that the band modifies and does an amazing job with. 4.5/5

6. Freakshow– The title track is next and it builds up before it launches forward, but like many tracks before it, it has that bluesy tinge to it. 4/5

bulletboys-freak_show-cd7. Goodgirl– The intro is sleazed up just right with that guitar riff and Marq Torien rocks the mic like a rebellious leader almost like Paul Stanley in All Hell’s Breakin Loose. 4/5

8. Do Me Raw- a sleaze blues track that has elements of Van Halen in it and I think you can guess what this song is about. 4/5

9. Ripping Me– The track kicks off a part of the album that is truly rocking where if you want that hard rock, this is it and they do it with a Van Halen like edge to it. The track seems to be talking about addiction or at least that is what I get from it.

10. Say Your Prayers– This is one of my favortie tracks on the record as it opens with a cool drum beat very reminiscent of an Ozzy drum riff from No Rest For The Wicked album. The song is definitely the most rocking track on the album. 5/5

11. O Me O My– Another groovin track from the album that shows off the band’s rock wild side and it features a cool guitar solo. 4.5/5

12. Huge– The last track on the album has a slow build up with D’Anda hitting the high hat before Sweda comes right in to kick it into overdrive. The lyrics are very simple because they are just chanting, “Do you have the balls” so it’s a showcase for the band. 4/5

My Final Thoughts– The track listing for the album is going to be different no matter where you look because it has been released in multiple ways. I truly believe that musically this was the band’s best record, but I always felt it was overshadowed by the self titled. I am going to give the album 4.25 stars out of five for a final grade.
