usagiIf you are a fan of Marvel Comics then this was week was definitely an impressive week for you with all of the titles being released this week from a new Gwenpool to an all new Punisher comic, and the continuing Absolute  Carnage story line to name a few. If there are comics that you have already been following like myself then this was week was pretty decent and I chose a comic from IDW Publishing for this week’s featured comic. If you do not know who Stan Sakai is then shame on you because he is a one man wrecking machine with his comic Usagi Yojimbo which he writes and draws himself. Back in June, IDW published the beginning of a three part arc in the Bunraku story which is featured in Usagi Yojimbo #3. Sasuke is a demon hunter of sorts or at least he hunts evil spirits no matter where he goes and he crosses paths with everyone’s favorite Ronin Usagi who has been attending a Banraku (a very long play). There is something strange about this play and after the discovery of a dead samurai who looked like the life was sucked out of him, the two of them go to work. They soon discover that the sensei of the theater is the one behind the crime and now it is time to confront them which is what they do in issue 3. The only problem they face is whether the sensei is the evil or just another puppet whose strings are being pulled?

usagi 2I have always loved the Usagi Yojimbo comics for how well written the stories are and how well presented they are as well. Reading these comics is like watching a Kurosawa film, but with animals instead of humans and if you love his films then you may enjoy these comics. I really liked the story because this whole time, Usagi was thinking that there was something up with the puppets, but he couldn’t put his finger on it until Sasuke showed up. It’s kind of showing us that even though Usagi is a great warrior, smart, and very noble that even he needs help at times even if it’s from strange people from his past. It’ll be interesting to see where Sakai goes from here and I mean as far as continuing with issue four or will he do what Marvel always does with the five different number one issues a year. I am a huge fan of the artwork cause it has been the same style for years and I respect that a lot from Sakai and it just works for this comic. I wouldn’t want to see it more modernized anyways because that has always been the beauty of the comic. There is plenty of samurai action in this three issue story and plenty of fools going on the chopping block, but will Sasuke and Usagi prevail? There is only way to find out and that is pick up the comic yourselves. Check out my grades below:

Story/Plot: A+

Artwork: A+

Character Representation: A+

Entertainment Value: A+
