prequelleIf 2017 was a hectic year for Swedish metal band Ghost then 2018 was definitely the year of redemption for the mastermind behind it all in Tobias Forge. 2017 saw lawsuits from past Nameless Ghouls like Simon Söderberg, Mauro Rubino, Martin Hjertstedt, and Henrik Palm all sued the singer over royalty disputes. Despite all of the outside noise, Ghost has soldiered on with a new album and a new character in 2018. On June 1, 2018, the band would release their fourth studio album Prequelle and for the first time ever, the band was not fronted by a Papa, but by Cardinal Copia. The album which is themed around Mideval times and the black plague was a huge success for the band upon it’s release as it debuted at number three on the Billboard Top 200 selling 66,000 copies in it’s first week. Besides the US, the album would peak in the top five in eight different countries with it going number one in Sweden, Finland, Norway, and New Zealand. The album was also nominated for a Grammy (Best Rock Album) as well as a Grammis (The Swedish version) for best Hardrock and Metal album, but it failed to take home any awards. What it did win was the album of the year at the 8TH Annual Monster Entertainment Awards which is why I am covering it for this week.

Ashes– The first track on the album is an intro track that features Tobias’s daughter Minou Forge singing the nursery rhyme Ring a Ring o’ Roses which is thought to have been written during the times of the plague. Its perfect for the album because it adds a creepiness to it. 5/5

2. Rats– The first track on the album and the first single with it’s Ozzy Osbourne/Randy Rhoads styled tempo and sound in this metaphorical track about the black plague and the spread of disease. 5/5

3. Faith-a doom metal styled track that touches on elements of Heavy Metal as well that just kicks ass about how people are always  afraid to adapt new ways even though we have to be a progressive society and that faith can get in the way. 5/5

4. See The Light– A very cool melancholic like track that some may believe has something to do with the plague, but I think this track is a shot at the bandmates that have sued him in the past. 5/5

5. Miasma-The first instrumental track on the album that is absolutely awesome and even features a saxaphone solo played by Gavin Fitzjohn. It’s the band flexing their prog rock muscle. 5/5

ghost-prequelle6. Dance Macabre-The pop metal disco like sounding track was the second single released off the album and is a track about people partying like they never have before because they know that they are going to die anyways so why not? 5/5

7. Pro Memoria-an interesting ballad that features Davide Rossi providing the orchestration for the track in this song about the devil constantly reminding you that he may have granted you power, but he can easily take it away from you as well. 5/5

8. Witch Image– An awesome track that is all about someone who used witch craft to avoid the plague and dying while others all around them are dying horrible deaths. 5/5

9. Helvetesfönster– The second instrumental track on the album that is absolutely beautiful in composition and features Opeth’s Mikael Åkerfeldt playing the acoustic guitar parts. 5/5

10. Life Eternal– The last track on the album that sees Forge use the piano for the track  while asking the all important question of immortality. If you had the choice to live forever would you take it? 5/5

My Final Thoughts– Ghost has never disappointed me with any of their previous releases and they definitely raised the bar with this one in my opinion. The album shows that Tobias can write classic sounding tracks without making them seem to nostalgic to the point that it’s corny. I love the whole entire album which is why I am giving it five stars out of five for a final grade.

We did things a little differently this year with the 8TH Annual Monster Entertainment Awards as we had you guys take a quick survey to decide who you wanted to win Rock album of the year, rookie of the year (which was a new category) as well as movie of the year, actor of the year and many more. One of the other reasons why we decided to do things in a survey style is because we wanted the winners to be a total surprise to all of you out there. That way you can sit in anticipation to see if the album or film that you voted for won and if not I’m sure a film or album you like will win next year. linkinOne of the saddest moments of 2017 was the fact that we not only lost Chris Cornell, but that a short time later we also lost Chester Bennington of Linkin Park. I can remember as a member of Massasoit Community College’s radio station, we were invited to a record release party for Hybrid Theory and at that time I had no idea how huge this band would become. After six amazing studio albums, I wondered what else could this band possibly do and the album One More Light was the answer as it was voted Album Of The Year by you the fans at this years Monster Entertainment Awards. The final lineup on the record was Chester (Vocals), Mike Shinoda (Vocals, Programming, Keyboards), Brad Delson (Guitars), Phoenix (Bass), Joe Hahn (Programming), and Rob Bourdon (Drums). The album was produced by Brad Delson and Mike Shinoda and it was released on May 19, 2017 via Warner Brothers. The album did so well that peaked at number one in 7 different countries while also peaking in the top 5 in 7 different countries. In the year end album charts it finished at number 90 on the US Billboard top 200 too. The album was recorded very differently than usual as they recorded vocals first and then built the music around it. In an interview with Zane Lowe, Shinoda described the record saying, “In terms of the style of the record, it’s one of the most diverse stylistically, there’s more genres mashed into this album than anything we’ve ever put out. You don’t hear a lot of super heavy guitars. There isn’t any screaming on the record. To some extent it is a very polished record. Stylistically we wanted to blend all of the sound and genres together in a way you can’t tell them apart.”

linkin 21. Nobody Can Save Me– The track that kicks off this musical experiment with some electronic elements mixed in with some guitars and I feel this is a very personal song from Chester. It’s like he’s saying that no matter what you tell him, he doesn’t feel he can be saved. 4/5

2. Good Goodbye– The second track that follows the more hip hop element of the band mixed with the guitars and such. The song features Pusha T and Stormzy providing their own verses along with Shinoda who raps the first verse. I feel like this is a track where the band is saying if you’re not with us then goodbye to you. 5/5

3. Talking To Myself– One of my favorite tracks on the album that has more of a rock/pop sound that Chester is talking about a relationship that just isn’t going anywhere. 5/5

4. Battle Symphony– Another amazing song on the album where Chester is telling you that no matter hate is thrown at him, he will always have his guard up, but he’s also pleading to the fans not to give up on him either. 5/5

5. Invisible– One of the tracks that features singing from Shinoda and I was impressed with it. It’s one of those tracks that if something bad happened to you that you no longer have to worry because he is going to be there for you now because he’s not afraid to speak up anymore. 5/5

linkin 36. Heavy– A track that truly took a lot of criticism upon it’s release for being a slow burn pop song, but it’s honestly a great track featuring Kiiara on vocals as well. It’s a very deep track that kind of pinpoints Chester’s depression because the song is a metaphor for when it rains it pours kind of attitude. 5/5

7. Sorry For Now– This is the other track on the album that features Shinoda singing the vocals in a track that is about someone who knows that he messed up because maybe he wasn’t there for the person and he understands that they are mad, but he saying I will try next time. The track in parts has an almost dubstep feel to it. 4.5/5

8. Halfway Right-The song is kind of retrospective lyrically because it’s Chester looking back at how he may have handled things wrong back in the day, but he finally realizes that now. 5/5

9. One More Light-A very personal and amazing track that deal with the idea of loss and how some take it for granted. Another example of how brilliant Chester really was and this is a track to help you with loss. 5/5

10. Sharp Edges– The last track on the album that has a little bit of a folk feel to it ina  track that is all about how you should listen to your elders because they now a thing or two about life, but sometimes you do need to live a little too. 4/5

My Final Thoughts– Listening to this album, you realize how brilliant this band is and even though Chester is gone, we have a catalog to remember his brilliance. I think the direction change was ballsy, but I think it paid off in the long run because they’ve always done what they’ve wanted to do. I love every track on this album, but my favorite songs are Invisible and Talking To Myself. This time I am not picking a least favorite track so I am going to go ahead and give the album 4.7 stars out of five for a final grade.

Monster Entertainment Awards 7I have hosted this award post for seven years now and I never fails to bring enjoyment to me for a couple of reasons. One of the reasons being that each album that wins gets a review for the album of the week so that will be exciting for the next month. The second reason is that we get to celebrate and vote for what we believe was the best rock album of the previous calendar year and we voted for the best of 2017 and I have the results for you guys. Marilyn Manson seems to always be a big winner as he won album of the year for The Pale Emperor, but this year he takes home the award for Best Rock Album for Heaven Upside Down as well as Rock Single and Rock Video Of The Year as well. There is going to be a lot of arguments over the winner of the album of the year, but Link Park really did put out a solid effort with One More Light. Code Orange came out of nowhere and defeated some giants of metal to take home the Metal Album Of The Year award while Morbid Angel claims their first win in the Extreme Metal Album Of The Year with Kingdoms Disdained. Monster Entertainment Awards 7So, it has taken us a little while to get this out and we apologize for the wait. Some things have changed and we have decided that we are not going to run the Pedal To The Metal Tournament this year for lack of participation and scheduling conflicts. That is also why we have extended the voting process for this because we have been so far behind that we are starting to catch up now. You now have until April 1st to cast your vote for your favorite wrestlers, albums, and movies. We have a lot of great categories and some categories have already seen the voting process begin on Twitter. Nevertheless, we hope that you guys take the time to vote and to enjoy it because it is up to you to decide who wins and you can vote once an hour on every category. Monster Entertainment Awards 7I want to take the time to apologize to everyone for the wait, but we have been hard at work at some things for you guys which includes our March Madness style tournament. It’s hard to believe that we have been doing this awards thing known as The Monster Entertainment Awards for seven years now as 2018 marks the seventh annual presentation. A couple of things have changed however and you’ll notice that below, but each category will be handled by a different blog as we are working with the 365 Movies in 365 Days Challenge blog and Mr. X’s Punch Out blog. We here at Moshpits and movies will be handling the music side of things while 365 handles the films and Mr. X handles the wrestling side. As always, you are going to have a certain amount of time to vote for what album you loved more, what movie you thought was film of the year, and what wrestler you thought kicked ass. post-pop-depressionAs per custom (or at least we try to), we always cover the albums that have won album of the year, rock album of the year, etc. at the Monster Entertainment Awards. Last year, we didn’t cover a lot of them because I had already covered them before hand so I made a rule that I will not cover new albums until after the award show is done. There were definitely some interesting albums that were up for Album Of The Year, but the one at the end of the day that you chose as the winner is none other than the legendary Iggy Pop and his latest album Post Pop Depression. The special thing about this album is that not only is the 17TH album overall that Iggy Pop has recorded, but it features an all star lineup from bands like Queens Of The Stone Age and the Arctic Monkeys. The band is made up of Josh Homme (vocals, guitar, bass, piano, synthesizers, mellotron, production, percussion), Dean Fertita (Guitar, Piano, Synth, and Bass Guitar), and Matt Helders (drums, percussion, tom-toms, shaker, backing vocals). The album did very well for Iggy Pop as it went placed in the top 20 in 18 different countries including that it peaked at number 17 on The Billboard Top 200 Charts.

2016_iggypopgardenia_press_2201161. Break Into Your Heart– I love the intro of the track that has that Arabic feel to it like a sitar is playing. The song has a Queens/Desert rock sound to it. I feel like it’s Iggy saying that he’s going to break into your heart so that we all love him again. 5/5

2. Gardenia– A more poppy sound to it then the last track that reminds me of 80’s pop/Bowie with it sound and killer bass line. I often wonder if this is a response to The Passenger which is also by Pop. 5/5

3. American Valhalla– a cool and different intro opens the track before the killer bass line from Fertita drives the song forward. The song could be commentary on fame and that all musicians are driving for that place where you are immortalized forever. 5/5

4. In the Lobby– A track that is more in the style of Pop that has that garage rock sense to it while also having the Homme touch to it. 4.5/5

5. Sunday– A very hip track that has a disco touch to it as far as the overall sound and I want to say that the track is about the joys having to do nothing cause it’s Sunday, but I’m not sure. 4.5/5

iggy-josh-preess-26. Vulture– The track starts with an acoustic guitar before a western style bell and music comes along and it’s all about Vultures (maybe literal or metaphorically). 5/5

7. German Days– A cool bluesy garage rock track that has many other layers as well with the music. 4/5

8. Chocolate Drops– A Steely Dan esque track that seems to be about when the going gets rough, it just rains shit. 4.5/5

9. Paraguay– The last track on the album that is smooth in it’s delivery with it’s surf rock melodies entwined into it. The track contains a huge rant from Pop that could be directed towards his skeptics and the internet trolls everywhere. 4/5

My Final Thoughts– I think the band does a pretty terrific job of trying to recapture the sound that was contained in the Bowie/Pop collaborations. This is definitely an album to check out, I am giving it 4.6 stars out of five for a final grade.
