81ZLmPVUVXL._SL1500_When you think of metal and the country of Italy, there are only two bands that immediately come to mind with one being Fleshgod Apocalypse and the other being Venice’s own gothic metal act Lacuna Coil. The band which was made up of Cristina Scabbia (Vocals), Andrea Ferro (Vocals), Marco “Maus” Biazzi (Lead Guitar), Cristiano “Pizza” Migliore (Rhythm Guitar), Marco Coti Zelati (Bass/Keyboards), and Cristiano “Criz” Mozzati (Drums) first appeared on the scene in 1999, but it was until their third album Comalies was released that I began to take notice and pay attention. It was released on October 29, 2002 via Century Media and Cristina talked about the album saying, “[During the album’s recording], we had a sort of creative explosion. We were working in a coma, sort of like in a different dimension. First of all we just wanted to use the word ‘coma’ but there was something missing so we played with the two words coma and lies.” The album would peak at number 178 on the Billboard Top 200 charts as well as peaking at number nine on the Top Heatseekers and Independent Albums charts too as the album has gone on to sell over 300,000 copies in the US. Rock Hard Magazine ranked the album #415 in their The 500 Greatest Rock & Metal Albums of All TimeĀ book and Metal Hammer ranked it 59th on their greatest album of the 21st century chart as well.

114595227_838803151. Swamped– I love the effect in the beginning of the track, but what I really love is the heavy guitars mixed with the orchestral string backing track. The second and final single released from the album features both Andrea and Cristina sharing vocals in this track about having so much potential that you are swamped trying to get their. 5/5

2. Heaven’s A Lie– The first track I ever heard from the band and this is still my all time favorite track from them about how the perfect life or anything is a lie. It’s about what happens when people try to force their opinions on you, it doesn’t mean that they are right. 5/5

3. Daylight Dancer-a cool track that is all about someone who is always trying to mask what the answer to their problems are even though they know the truth. 4.5/5

4. Humane-a very cool intro with the keys before the band kicks in to take over in this track that is all about following your heart and what it tells you. 4.5/5

5. Self Deception– A kick ass track about a man who takes the fall for another when he really didn’t commit the crime. 4.5/5

6. Aeon-A short track that is less than two minutes that is all about someone that they acre about that every time they hold them they steal their love complete with acoustic/clean channel guitars. 4/5

119028662-37. Tight Rope-a track that I think they are talking about someone that they care about, but the problem is that they are always walking on a tight rope when they are near them. 5/5

8. The Ghost Woman and the Hunter-a very excellent track on the album that I believe is all about a relationship they has ended, but one fears that the other has forgotten all about them. 5/5

9. Unspoken-A little more energy in this track that is all about being away from that person who may not be physically abusive, but they are mentally abusive. 4.5/5

10. Entwined– a track that once again visits that feeling of being trapped in a relationship that is not going anywhere. 4/5

11. The Prophet Said– I saw an interesting take on this track where the song could be bout how one partner tells the other one that she couldn’t get anyone ans she believes it and in turn tries to always make him feel better. 4/5

12. Angel’s Punishment-The song is all about war and how it is usually created through lies. 4/5

13. Comalies– The last song on the album, the title track, and I believe Cristina and her interpretation of the album title. Sometimes, we are just living with a lie and we can’t get out of it like we are in a coma. 4/5

My Final Thoughts– An amazing album from beginning to end, I remember seeing the band tour on this album at Ozzfest and just being amazed how well the songs translated live. If you’re looking to get into them, this is definitely a good starting point. Then travel backwards to see the progression to here and then how they grew musically to right now. I am going to give the album 4.5 stars out of five for a final grade.
