Star_Wars_The_Force_AwakensI have been waiting a very long time for a film to absolutely blow me away and J.J. Abrams just did that for me with his new film Star Wars: The Force Awakens. The film is the seventh episode in the series and is the first since 2005’s Star Wars: Revenge Of The Sith. The film takes place 30 years after the events of The Return Of The Jedi and The First Order of the Galactic Empire is on the rise as it fearless leader Kylo Ren (Adam Driver) are on the hunt for the whereabouts of Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamil) which are with a a resistance fighter pilot named Poe Dameron (Oscar Isaac) and his droid BB-8. During a mission to abtrieve the two of them, a stormtrooper eventually named Finn (John Boyega) sees the wrong doings of the First Order and decides to fight back along with a courageous girl named Rey (Daisy Ridley). The film also stars Harrison Ford (Star Wars) as Han Solo, Carrie Fisher (Star Wars) as General Leia, Lupita Nyong’o (12 Years A Slave) as Maz Kanata, Andy Serkis (Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes) as Supreme Leader Snook, Domhnall Gleeson (Ex Machina) as General Hux, Anthony Daniels (Star Wars) as C-3PO, Peter Mayhew (Star Wars) as Chewbacca, and Gwendoline Christie (Game Of Thrones) as Captain Phasma.

star warsI am trying my best not to spoil any major details for anyone, but for here on out I am going to give you a spoiler alert just in case I do. There are details in this film that are going to blow your mind like who are Han and Leia’s kid(s), what connection does Kylo Ren have to Darth Vader (considering he is obsessed with him), and where is Luke Skywalker? Most of these are answered in the film and there are some tough moments especially if you are a fan of any original characters. Kylo Ren’s character is an amazing study because he struggles with the light and the dark side, but the real show stealer in my opinion is Rey (Ridley). In my opinion, she is an absolute bad ass and she is such an amazing character, but I am not going to give away any major details about her. All I can say is that she is a true bad ass. One of the biggest concerns that I had about the film was whether or not it would live up to the original three released and that hopefully it was way better than the prequels. J.J. Abrams achieved all of that with this masterpiece as he did the series justice. He gave you everything from comedic moments, action packed moments, to the very dramatic moments all in one film. Kudos go to the special effects team on a job well done. The only thing I could have wished for a little more was more Captain Phasma who we only see in brief moments, but hopefully we’ll see more of her in the future. This is a definite must see film for any fan of Sci-Fi or Star Wars in general. I am going to give the film an A+ for a final grade.

comiccon_nov2015_eventimage_600x280-copyWhen I had heard that the Rhode Island Comic Con was returning for another year, I was super excited just to see who was going to be there as far as guests. I was immediately excited to see that Jon Bernthal, Jason Momoa, Ralph Macchio, Ron Pearlman, Michael Rooker, Doug Jones, Karen Gillan, the Million Dollar Man Ted DiBiase, The Honky Tonk Man, “X-Pac” Sean Waltman, Amy Jo Johnson, and so many more were going to be there. I had all the people I wanted to meet and all the things I wanted to get signed all ready to go, but as you know things change and I forget things sometimes. Nevertheless along with some friends, I made my way to the convention at both The Dunkin Donuts Center and The Rhode Island Convention Center in Providence, Rhode Island. I think it would be wise to let all of you know that this was the very first time that I had ever attended the Rhode Island Comic Con so I had no idea what to expect from this one.

me and iron manThe first impression that I received when I arrived was that they had things under control even though the lines walking into the building were very long and it came as no surprise considering it was a Saturday. The first person that I got to meet at the event was Jon Bernthal who everyone knows is going to star in the new season of Daredevil as The Punisher. Jon was very nice and courtesy to everyone who came and spent money to get his autograph. I do have to admit that some of the prices to meet some of the stars was a little too pricey for my liking as most didn’t include a picture like it did at The Rock And Shock Convention in Worcester. I then proceeded to go the actual Convention Center side where everyone was an I immediately found where Karen Gillan who stars in Doctor Who, but I loved her in Guardians Of The Galaxy as Nebula was going to sign. I started to wait in line at 12PM and by 2:30, she had had never showed as she decided to take a lunch break after her photo Op session went a little too long. I was so angry because I had my Funko Pop Nebula figure all ready to be signed, but I was hungry and tired from standing in line that I received a refund and left. I was so agitated at this that I had to step outside for a breath of fresh air before I went back in.

me and tedIt was a good thing I went outside for that air because as soon as I returned, I had fun meeting Demolition, the greatest WWF/E tag team of all time and still my favorite tag team of all time. I bumped in to Ciara Price who I had interviewed on my college radio show Pedal To The Metal (check it out here) and she is just as beautiful and sweet in person as she was on the phone. The next person that I met that day was the Million Dollar Man Ted DiBiase who was super cool which is all you can ask for when you are at these events. The Honky Tonk Man was also very cool as I told him he was the greatest Intercontinental Champion of all time to which he agreed. Sean Waltman was also very cool and Henry Winkler seemed very nice to his fans, but I didn’t stay to meet him. After that I was all set meeting who I wanted to meet and I proceeded to leave. The one thing that I will say is that some of the people seemed like they didn’t want to be there while others did and that is a natural thing I guess. Unfortunately, Carrie Fisher canceled her appearance to the Comic Con for personal reasons I believe, but she promised to be there next year. One person that didn’t seem to want to be there was Lori Petty who some of you may remember from Tank Girl or Point Break (and maybe even In The Army Now). Her attitude didn’t bother me or ruin my experience there. The security and staff of the convention center could have done a better job with their policies, but it was a good time overall.

wonderlandFor today’s Based On A Truesday Story, we are looking at a film that I consider to be one of Val Kilmer’s best performances of the early 21ST century in the film Wonderland. In the 1970’s, John Holmes (played by Val Kilmer)was considered to be one of the first “Porn Stars” and he instantly became a legend having sex with over 14,000 women and having a legendary member whose size is still debated today. That was the 70’s and in the 80’s, John was a shell of his former self battling drug abuse problems that rattled his life. Due to the drug problems, John Holmes was in the center of a murder investigation for the Wonderland Murders along with famous club owner and suspect Eddie Nash (Eric Bogosian). Four people were killed and 1 survived a brutal attack and the story of what happened before the murders and during is told in two different perspectives with one being Holmes and the other being David Lind (Dylan McDermott). The film also stars Kate Bosworth (Still Alice) as Dawn Schiller, Carrie Fisher (Star Wars) as Sally Hansen, Josh Lucas (American Psycho) as Ron Launius, Tim Blake Nelson (The Incredible Hulk) as Billy Deverell, Janeane Garofalo (Mystery Men) as Joy Miller, Natasha Gregson Wagner (Lost Highway) as Barbara Richardson, Christina Applegate (Don’t Tell Mom The Babysitters Dead) as Susan Launius, Lisa Kudrow (Friends) as Sharon Holmes, Faizon Love (Friday) as Greg Diles, and the film was directed by James Cox (Highway).

wonderland 2In the film, you see something from each character’s perspective whether it an event that happened or the actual event itself. For Kate Bosworth, this was a real gritty role for her to play the girlfriend of John Holmes during the worst years of his life. As I said before, this was one of my favorite roles that had Val Kilmer in it and he was coming out with unique films at the time like The Salton Sea and Spartan. He totally engulfs the role of a junkie and a man who can’t even tell if he believes what he spews out of his own mouth. The editing of the film is where it is at as they mix footage of real newspaper articles, real news broadcasts, and they mix it in with the film almost creating a music video style approach to the editing at times. The acting in the film is absolutely superb from all angles and everyone in the film and the story is amazing. They could have done a biopic on John’s entire life, but they picked an event that was gritty and shocking. The scene when they go in for the attack is absolutely brutal and it even features an unwanted appearance from Paris Hilton. It still amazes me that the case went unsolved, but we all know how it ends for Johnny Wadd. I am giving the film an A for a final grade.
