J_Geils_Band_Fright_Night_45_01I know it’s not Halloween or October for that matter, but I couldn’t resist choosing a song that some may find corny for Soundtrack Saturday. If you’re a fan of horror movies and horror films of the great decadent decade known as the 80’s then you are probably a fan of the classic film Fright Night which starred Chris Sarandon, William Ragsdale, Amanda Bearse, Roddy McDowall, and Stephen Geoffreys in this film of vampires and teenagers (to read the review, checkout the 31 Days Of Halloween post here) 80’s style. The film was released in 1985 and it boasted a soundtrack that could be the soundtrack to any Halloween party as well as it featured songs from artists like White Sister, April Wine, Devo, Sparks, Ian Hunter, Autograph, and today’s featured artist in Boston’s legendary The J. Geils Band. Synthesizers are in full effect on this track as Seth Justman does his best on vocals as Peter Wolf was not present in the band at this time and the song has a real catchy chorus that gets stuck in your head. It was still a weird part of the decade as bands were experimenting more and more with synths at the time like Van Halen had the year before with 1984. I would definitely check out the film for all the greatness of the 80’s as well as all the other songs you’ll hear during the film. So, let’s give this song a listen below:


fright nightI believe a couple of years back I covered the remake of Fright Night with Colin Farrell for Eddie’s 31 Days Of Halloween and so I decided to cover the original film for this years edition. Tom Holland, the man behind the Child’s Play movies as well as some other classic horror flicks took the directors chair for this classic that stars William Ragsdale (The Reaping) as Charlie Brewster, a regular kid with regular problems like trigonometry and girlfriend problems. Those are the toughest challenges that Charlie faces until a vampire named Jerry (Chris Sarandon) moves next door to him. Charlie sees some weird things like the butler bringing a coffin into the basement and see’s Jerry pull out the old chompers. Murders are also happening in Charlies town and after recognizing one of the victims, Charlie believes that Jerry is a vampire and he tries to convince everyone, but nobody will believe him.After many attempts he finally get the help of a late night horror host name Peter Vincent (Roddy McDowall) as the two of them try to eradicate the world of the deadly creature of the night. The film also stars Stephen Geoffreys (976-Evil) as Evil Ed, Amanda Bearse (Married With Children) as Amy, Jonathan Stark (According To Jim) as Billy Cole, Dorothy Fielding (The Pursuit Of D.B. Cooper) as Judy Brewster, Art Evans (Metro) as Detective Lennox, and Bob Corff (Kick Ass) as Jonathan.

Fright Night Collage copyThere is a reason why I have always believed that the sparkling vampires of Twilight almost ruined the genre and that is because they had no sex appeal to them. Vampires always had sex appeal and charisma which is evident by the directors choice of the amazing Chris Sarandon. Sarandon brings everything to the table that is needed by a vampire which is charisma, sex appeal, and with because after all they are immortal and very powerful beings. Anytime this film is on TV, I always stop what I am doing to watch this film because it is honestly one of my favorites. Roddy McDowall is brilliant as Peter Vincent more so than the remake because he is a classy vampire killer. Some of the scenes where they kill whoever it is is pretty amazing and the scene where Vincent stabs the wolf version of Evil Ed is fantastic because the transformation scene is fantastic. Even the scene when one of the characters melts away is fantastic and I love all the jump cuts they use within the melting sequence. We all remember that Al Bundy use to make fun of Amanda Bearse’s character on that show and how he found her unattractive, but when she is in Jerry’s lair and she is dressed in that white dress, she looks sexy enough to me. This is a classic film that saw itself and it’s sequel both get remade in the 2000’s, But I want everyone to know that nothing touches the original. I am going to give this film an A because it is that awesome and let this be a lesson to all the Twilight fans too. thesentinelI had an idea for a scholarly article that I want to write about and I came upon a list of the 50 best satanic films of all time according to the person. There on the list was the film The Sentinel which quickly grabbed my attention due to the heavy future star power in the film. The film is about a model named Alison (Cristina Raines) who seems to have everything going for her. That is until she moves into a nice apartment in Brooklyn Heights and meets some pretty strange neighbors. The only thing is that Alison begins to see things and apparently the neighbors don’t exist. What is happening to Alison and who is the strange priest on the top floor? All that is answered in this film, but you’ll have to watch and find out. The film also stars Chris Sarandon (Child’s Play), Jeff Goldbloom (The Fly), Burgess Meredith (Rocky), Christopher Walken (The Dead Zone), Jerry Orbach (Law & Order), Beverly D’Angelo (National Lampoon Vacation), Sylvia Miles (Midnight Cowboy), Eli Wallach (The Godfather Part III), Ava Gardner (The Killers), John Carradine (The Grapes Of Wrath), and Martin Balsam (Tora Tora Tora).

I was shocked every time I recognized an actor in this film and then I would wonder why I hadn’t heard of the film before. The film basically takes what The Omen and Rosemary’s Baby do in their films and they amp it up with a different type of story. The Sentinel in this film is someone who is there to protect the gates of hell to make sure they stay closed. The demons will tempt the chosen the one with suicide that way when the current Sentinel passes, the gates will remain open. There is a interesting scene in the beginning with Beverly D’Angelo and her lesbian lover played by Sylvia Miles. Sylvia leaves the room and Beverly begins to play with herself in front of Alison and it’s kind of a weird and awkward scene. Other than that, the film tries to build suspense through confusion and I mean that by saying that we think these people are real, but they’re not. I didn’t understand the angle with the church for a while until the last twenty minutes of the film, but don’t let that sway you away because this is an amazing film. I am going to give a A- for a final grade.
