kickboxer-vengeanceOne of my all time favorite Jean Claude Van Damme films has always been Kickboxer not just because of how awesome Van Damme was, but also how cool Tong Po was too. In Hollywood, they are always remaking films and if you guessed it then the answer is yes. Our film for today’s Ass Whoopin Wednesdays is the new film Kickboxer: Vengeance. Eric Sloane (Darren Shahlavi) champions himself a really good fighter who has just won gold with the help of his little bro Kurt (Alain Moussi). Despite Kurt’s wishes, Eric travels to Thailand to take on Muay Thai champion Tong Po (Dave Bautista). Kurt will eventually go to see the fight, but when he does, he witnesses his brothers death in the ring. Kurt swears that he will get his revenge against Tong Po so he trains with a local Muay Thai trainer named Durand (Van Damme). The film also stars Gina Carano (Deadpool) as Marcia, Sara Malakul Lane (Scouts Guide To The Zombie Apocalypse) as Liu, Georges St-Pierre (Captain America: The Winter Soldier) as Kavi, T.J. Storm (Punisher: War Zone) as Storm, Hawn Tran (Heist) as Tran, Sam Medina (Keanu) as Crawford, MMA Fighter Cain Velasquez as King’s Fighter, and the film was directed by John Stockwell (Turistas). Before we get into the review of the film, let’s check out some of the stats:

kbv-stats-copy

kbv-copyAs far as the stats are concerned, Alain has about 30 kills/knock outs in the film and he doesn’t really have an origin story other than the training he receives. We also know that he attempted to take Tong Po’s life before he went for the training. He does have a love interest in the sexiest cop ever in Liu and he has a sexual conquest with her. Someone close to him does get hurt and it’s actually the death of his brother that drives him. He does defeat the big boss and you do know that this is a remake of the original film right? I loved the fact that Jean Claude Van Damme was in the film because the man is just full of charisma and in the original film he had tons of it. Alain was lacking a little bit of it in this film, but he did a great job overall. Dave Bautista was an amazing villain to have and he made Tong Po look even more dangerous than before with his size. As you can tell by my comment about the sexiest cop alive, it bothered me a little bit because she is way too attractive to be a cop. Nevertheless, she was great eye candy as was Gina Carano when she was on screen. It was cool that they had actual MMA fighters in the film as well to give a little authentic feel to it. Jean Claude Van Damme was a scene stealer when he was on and it’s why you should watch. I am going to give the film 3.5 fists out of five for a final grade because the original still kicks ass.

b-mco-chris-vs-chris_nvy1Listen, I know I am not crazy and I also know that the next Superbowl (which is Superbowl LI) isn’t going to happen for another 274 days (from todays date May 7TH), but there were just too many factors that played a part in me thinking about it. First of all, this weekend saw the official release of Captain America: Civil War (read review here) into theaters and it also happens to be Free Comic Book Day which saw the release of Civil War II as well as a Captain America comic. So with all of this in my face constantly, it made me remember a bet that was waged during SuperBowl 49 between Chris Evans (Captain America) and Chris Pratt (Star Lord) an they called it Superhero Bowl 49 as Pratt was a Seattle Seahawks fan and Evans a New England Patriots fan. I don’t know why one wasn’t down for last years SuperBowl, but I would love to see it return once again. They made an incredible T-Shirt with proceeds going to charity and they dressed in character for each other’s charities. It was all fun and it was for great causes.

marvel_cinematic_universe_timeline_by_darkmudkip6-d9jhxzl copySo, I thought of a list of teams that I would love to see make the next SuperBowl in hopes that there is an actor from that city that plays a Marvel character. Anthony Mackie, the man who plays Falcon represents The New Orleans Saints. Robert Downey Jr. (Iron Man), Scarlet Johansson (Black Widow), and Paul Rudd (Ant-Man) all can represent whatever team from the New York/New Jersey area (Jets or Giants). Don Cheadle who plays War Machine represents the Kansas City Chiefs while Jeremy Renner (Hawkeye) could represent either the Oakland Raiders or the San Francisco 49ERS (depending on his preference). Chadwick Boseman is from South Carolina so it would be interesting to see what team he picks whether it be Carolina or any of the teams near by. If we go beyond the film, there’s Mark Ruffalo (Hulk) who can represent the Green Bay Packers and Samuel L. Jackson (Nick Fury) and Dave Bautista (Drax) could represent the Washington Redskins. Vin Diesel who plays Groot could also represent either Oakland or San Fran while Bradley Cooper (Rocket Raccoon) could represent the Philadelphia Eagles. If we go into the television universe of Marvel, Jon Bernthal (The Punisher) could represent the Washington Redskins while Kristen Ritter (Jessica Jones) could represent either the Eagles or the Pittsburgh Steelers (depending on her preference). Meanwhile Mike Colter (Luke Cage) is just like Chadwick Boseman where it depends on his preference as he is also from South Carolina. So, keep all of these options in mind once the football season starts and hopefully they bring back Superhero Bowl once again.

635532740226866485-spectre-teaser-posterSince 2013, there have been a total of 23 bond films made and produced with six different men donning the tuxedo and calling themselves James Bond with Daniel Craig being the latest. Today, we had some exciting film news because they officially released some kind of poster for the 24TH Bond film which is going to be called Spectre. Sam Mendes live today from the 007 stage at Pinewood Studios in England revealed the film title and he also revealed who would be starring as the next Bond villain. Besides Daniel Craig as Bond, the film will star Guardians Of The Galaxy star Dave Bautista as Mister Hinx, Andrew Scott (Sherlock Holmes) as Denby, and the new Bond girls are Monica Bellucci (The Matrix) and Lea Seydoux (Inglorious Basterds). Now, we know that they signed magnificent actor Christoph Waltz, but who is he playing exactly. According to a source of mine, some believed that Waltz was going to playing the role of Ernst Stavro Blofeld, but the rumor is that he is going to be playing Oberhauser.

SPECTRE_PC_016_rgb-720x480The official synopsis read as follows, “A cryptic message from Bond’s past sends him on a trail to uncover a sinister organisation. While M battles political forces to keep the secret service alive, Bond peels back the layers of deceit to reveal the terrible truth behind Spectre.” Shooting for the film will apparently begin on Monday, but they are still in rehearsals right now. They expect the film’s shoot to last for seven months with shooting happening in locations like London, Rome, Mexico City, Morocco and Austria. Ben Whishaw returns to the film as Q while Ralph Fiennes takes Judi Dench’s place as M. Naomie Harris is Moneypenny while Rory Kinnear returns to play MI6 chief of staff Bill Tanner. One of the other cool things about the reveal was what car James Bond was going to drive for this film and it’s a brand new Aston Martin DB10. We have the picture for you below and the film is tentatively due for release on November 6, 2015. So stay tuned for more info as it becomes available.

suicide squadSome big news for fans of DC Comics and the highly anticipated David Ayer directed Suicide Squad project was released yesterday that will surely leave mixed emotions across the scope. Jared Leto, the Oscar winning actor (for Dallas Buyers Club) has officially signed on to play The Joker in the new Suicide Squad film while Will Smith (Men In Black, Independence Day) has signed on to play Deadshot. Both of them are going to be joined by Tom Hardy (The Dark Knight Rises) who plays Rick Flagg and Margot Robbie (The Wolf Of Wall Street) who plays Harley Quinn. Those are the big names that are attached to the film, but they are joined by lesser known actors Jai Courtney (Divergent) who will play Captain Boomerang and supermodel Cara Delevingne will play Enchantress. The group have begun pre-production on the film and it’s set to film in and around Toronto from April to about September.

david_ayerWarner Bros. Studios worldwide production boss Greg Sullivan had this to say in a statement regarding the film, “The Warner Bros. roots are deep on this one. David Ayer returns to the studio where he wrote ‘Training Day’ and brings his incredible ability to craft multidimensional villains to this iconic DC property with a cast of longtime Warner collaborators Will Smith and Tom Hardy, and other new and returning favorites.” Apparently, the studio is still looking for someone to play the pivotal role of Amanda Waller, the woman in charge and responsible for the Suicide Squad, but all signs are pointing to Viola Davis (How To Get Away With Murder) potentially having the role. Also, there is a good possibility that Jesse Eisenberg could be joining the cast to reprise his role as Lex Luthor after having shot Superman V. Batman. The film has a theatrical release date of August 5, 2016.

Van Damme Kickboxer 1In other news, Kickboxer the remake apparently has it’s final star to get the cameras rolling. This is one of those films that I truly believe doesn’t need a remake because the first was so classic, but Hollywood calls the shots and this one is moving ahead with Jean Claude Van Damme, “The Muscles From Brussels”, is returning for the remake of the film, but not to take the role you think he is. Dennis Chan played the role of Xian Chow in the original Kickboxer film, but now Jean Claude is going to be playing him in the new film as he mentors Alain Moussi (White House Down) who now plays the role of Kurt Sloane to take on Tong Po who will now be played by WWE Superstar Dave Bautista (Guardians Of The Galaxy). They are also joined by George St. Pierre, Sam Medina, and T.J. Storm. According to The Hollywood Reporter Producer Ted Fields commented on JCVD joining the cast, “We are so excited to have Kickboxer roll into production and to have JCVD in the role of Master Chow, passing the torch to Alain, to have him lead the franchise to a new generation.” Tony Jaa was originally supposed to play the part of Master Chow, but due to scheduling conflicts, he had to drop out of the film.
