wonder twinsWhen it came time to pick what comic book I was going to review this week for Comic Book Of The Week, it was a tough decision. There were so many great releases this week like the Spider-Gwen Ghost Spider #5, Army Of Darkness/Bubba Ho-Tep #1, but for this week I had to go with a DC title that I was curious and excited for in the new Wonder Twins #1. The comic was written by Mark Russell (Judge Dredd: Under Siege) and illustrated by Stephen Byrne (Justice League America). The duo from Planet Exxor are in some kind of trouble back on their home planet that Superman agrees to help them out by bringing them to Earth for a fresh start. They are a unique pair of twins with Changeling type powers that are odd when you tell people what they are. Nonetheless, all they want to do is belong in school which is growing to be challenging as well as doing their best at their new job at the Hall of Justice. That will be put to the test when Mr. MXYZPTLK pays their dimension a visit. For more information on the Wonder Twins and anything else DC related, just click here.

111I have to say one thing almost immediately and that is that I thought that this was the most entertaining comic from beginning to end that just provided me with so many laughs. You have all heard the legends of their powers and to see it actually happen and the reactions from guys like Batman is just absolutely priceless. If you are looking for a fun comic book to take your focus away from all the dark comics and the overly infused with action comics that are being released then this is the one to check out. So, I definitely think that with what I just wrote that I was a huge fan of what Mark Russell wrote in this comic. He knows how to mix in the humor in just the right places and it certainly pays dividends for him because I’ll be coming back for more. Stephen Byrne also does a terrific job with the artwork and some kudos is well deserved for the work that he put in because he brought them to life. I just thought a lot of the reactions were just illustrated perfectly like when Batman found out what their powers were. His reaction was absolutely priceless so with that being said, go and pick this one up. Check out my grades for the comic below:

Story/Plot: A+

Artwork: A+

Character Representation: A+

Entertainment Value: A+

man of steel titleFor this week’s Super Sunday, we are heading back into the DC Universe for one of the comics that basically made them who they are today. For a lot of us comic book fans that grew up in the 80’s and 90’s, Christopher Reeve was the man known as Superman in all of our eyes. In 2006, Warner Brothers and DC Comics decided to bring back Superman to the big screen considering things were hot for Marvel at the time with Spider-Man and X-men. The only problem is their 2006 film Superman Returns was a huge flop and disappointment in the eyes of many fans. It would take seven years and for Christopher Nolan to dominate with his edgy and dark take on the Batman series with The Dark Knight Trilogy for DC and Warner to finally realize what they had to do with the Superman series and now we have 2013’s Man Of Steel. Henry Cavill (Immortals) stars as Clark Kent, Kal-El, or Superman as the film explores his origins of how he made it to Earth. Although in this film, we learn that General Zod (Michael Shannon) and the fact that Krypton was about to end was the reason for him travelling to Earth. Jor-El (Russell Crowe) and Lara (Ayelet Zurer) had to sacrifice their lives so that Kal could live on a new planet. That doesn’t stop Zod and his outlawed and banished team from trying to find Kal so that they can recover something that is key to their planet. The film stars Diane Lane (Chaplin) as Marta Kent, Kevin Costner (Dances With Wolves) as Jonathan Kent, Amy Adams (American Hustle) as Lois Lane, Laurence Fishburne (The Matrix) as Perry White, Antje Traue (5 Days Of War) as Faora-Ul, Richard Cetrone (Watchmen) as Tor-An, and the film was directed by Zack Snyder (300).

superman Visually, I think this film is out of this world and that expression, “This film is visually stunning” is 100% accurate about Man Of Steel. Where Superman Returns failed, this film made up for it in every category. There is a reason why this film won the superhero movie of the year award last year in the 3RD Annual Monster Entertainment Awards with 50% of the vote and it was because it was that badass. I can’t pinpoint one performance that wasn’t better than any other performance because the cast was superb and Michael Shannon played an excellent villain. The special effects were great and the cinematography was on point. The only thing is that I wasn’t used to the idea of the film having Superman meet Lois Lane before he starts to work at The Daily Planet. This was definitely one of my favorite films from 2013 and unfortunately we have to wait until 2016 to get the second film in the series Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice. which stars Ben Affleck as the new Batman, Jesse Eisenberg as Lex Luthor, and Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman. I am going to give this film an A for a final grade. If you want to get involved in the voting process for the 4TH Annual Monster Entertainment Awards which features everything from Superhero film of the year, Horror, Action, comedy, and music categories as well, then click here.
