movie-john-wick-chapter-2-latino-audio-bigOne of my favorite action movies over the last couple of years was the out of nowhere John Wick which starred Keanu Reeves (Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure) as the title character. It has been quite some time since the last Ass Whoopin Wednesday post and I figured the best film to transition back into it is none other than the sequel John Wick: Chapter 2. We all know that int he last film, John Wick’s dog which was a present from his dead wife was killed and that his car was stolen. He took care of the problem in the last film, but he still needs to get his car back and he does. The only problem for John is that he thinks things are finally over until an Italian mob boss (Riccardo Scamarcio) suckers him back into the game by blowing up his house. Now the only problem is that he believes that if he does this job for him that all will be over until the mob turns the tables and double crosses him by putting a seven million dollar bounty on his head. The film also stars Ian McShane (Death Race) as Winston, Ruby Rose (Orange Is The New Black) as Ares, Common (Smokin’ Aces) as Cassian, Lance Reddick (John Wick) as Charon, Laurence Fishburne (The Matrix) as The Bowery King, Claudia Gerini (The Passion Of The Christ) as Gianna D’Antonio, and the film was directed by Chad Stahelski (John Wick). Before we get into the review of the film, let’s check out some stats:

John Wick 2john-wick-chapter-2-10These series of films are becoming my favorite franchise and they definitely turn the ante up for this one. The first film he only had 78 kills and in this film he almost doubled it with 127 kills total. I am not sure if that is the most we’ve recorded here on Ass Whoopin Wednesdays, but it’s definitely a lot. There is still no origin story because we don’t find out much about his past other than the usual oh the boogeyman is here. There is no love interest because his wife is still dead, but he has a new dog though that has no name. The big boss was definitely defeated, but there is more trouble coming for poor John Wick. I honestly thought that when Laurence Fishburne showed up that we were going to get a Neo/Morpheus encounter, it just seemed like it was going to go there. The action sequences in the film are awesome and pretty intense plus there is some really cool kills that John has. One of the things I love about the film are the various characters that we see like the mute assassin/bodyguard, Common’s character, and the homeless beggars. It makes you believe that just about anyone could be an assassin like the random sumo wrestling looking guy. It keeps you hooked in and ready to see who shows up next. There is nothing Oscar worthy about this film, but it’s fun and that is all some of us want in our action films. I am going to give this one 4.7 fists out of five for a final grade.

The-Bourne-Ultimatum-Gallery-19Jason Bourne is coming out in theaters on July 29TH and to celebrate the upcoming release of the film, I am watching all the films in the Bourne series. For this week’s Ass Whoopin Wednesday movie, we are watching the third film in the series The Bourne Ultimatum. Jason Bourne (Matt Damon) is back and the film kind of takes place right after the events of the second film. Jason finds that a journalist (Paddy Considine) has written about him in a newspaper, but when the journalist is killed, he stumbles on to something new that could lead him to the beginning. Unfortunately for Jason, there is a CIA official (David Strathairn) that is determined to stand in his way no matter what it takes even if it means eliminating people. The film also stars Joan Allen (Death Race) as Pam Landy, Julia Stiles (10 Things I Hate About You) as Nicky Parsons, Scott Glenn (Urban Cowboy) as Ezra Kramer, Edgar Ramirez (Wrath Of The Titans) as Paz, Albert Finney (The Big Fish) as Dr. Albert Hirsch, Daniel Brühl (Captain America: Civil War) as Martin Kreutz, Corey Johnson (Ex Machina) as Wills, Tom Gallop (Jerry Maguire) as Tom Cronin, and the film was directed by Paul Greengrass. Before we get into the review of the film, let’s check out some stats:

Bourne Ultimatum Stats

The-Bourne-Ultimatum-2As far as the stats are concerned, Damon has the highest kill/knockout rating of the whole series so far with 20 kills/knockouts. As always with this series, the origin story continues to unravel, but what you discover towards the end may shock you or it may not. He has no love interest in the film because she is dead, but there is something that Julia Stiles’s character says that caught me by surprise and made me think. No one close to him gets hurt other than the fact that Julia Stiles is being chased at one point. The big boss is defeated and it looks as if the chain of command at the CIA is rattled. The ending of the film could leave thinking one of two things and it was that either this was the end or they teased more films. Nevertheless, the film has a heck of a lot more action than the previous two films which kind of took away from the story of espionage, but it was a lot more fast paced. Is this the best of the three films in the series, if you’re talking about action then yes, but as far as story is concerned I would say it was close. Like the previous two films, it’s always interesting to see where in the world they go with this film touching down in Morocco, New York, Germany, Spain, Italy, and England. That is what is fun about these spy films is where they go and the things they have to do while there. The fight scene in the film that Damon has with Joey Ansah rivals that of any of the previous fight scenes in the first two films. Check it out for yourselves, I am giving the film 4.3 fists out of five for a final grade.

John-WickLast year, Keanu Reeves was featured in a film that absolutely suited him well in John Wick which was a film about an ex-hitman who goes for revenge after some Russian mobsters killed his dog and stole his car. The film only grossed about 40 million in the US, but it made 130 million worldwide. It was the growing popularity of the film once it was released on VHS that prompted the studio to OK a sequel to the film and now we have some news for you on whose coming back and whose coming aboard for the first time. Obviously, Keanu Reeves returns to reprise his role as John Wick, but he is joined by returning cast members John Leguizamo who plays chop shop owner Aurelio,  Lance Reddick (White House Down) as Charon, the concierge from the Continental Hotel, Tom Sadowski (Wild) as Jimmy, Ian McShane (Death Race) as Continental Hotel Owner Winston, and Bridget Moynahan as John’s late wife who we presume will be for flashbacks. The new cast members that were announced for the film are Ruby Rose (Resident Evil: The Final Chapter), Riccardo Scamarcio (Burnt), and Peter Stormare (22 Jump Street). We hear that rapper/actor extraordinaire Common will be in the film to play the major villain. There is no word on a release date, but as soon as I hear something I will let all of you know.

170px-Robin_Williams_2008In other news, I was not aware of the fact that the late Robin Williams had recorded tons of audio recordings as Genie when he filmed the original Aladdin which could have meant that Disney could make a sequel even after his death. Unfortunately, you will have to hold your horses on any chance of that happening according to a stipulation in the late actors will. Apparently, there is a stipulation in his will that prevents Disney from using anything that has to do with Robin Williams for at least 25 years. That is sad news indeed for anyone who was a fan of the brilliant performance Robin made as Genie. It looks like it won’t be until 2040 until Robin Williams will be in a film again as Genie and that is even if Disney still goes forward with that.

Mariah-CareyIn some more animated news, The LEGO Batman Movie is happening which is super exciting considering how awesome The LEGO Movie was. Will Arnett was one of the highlights of the film when he played Batman and we know that he is coming back to play the caped crusader in the film, but there is some strange news in my opinion. Mariah Carey is apparently in negotiations to play none other than Commissioner Gordon. I know that she has done some voice work before as well as acting, but as Commissioner Gordon? I am not sure quite how I feel about that, but it will be interesting to see nonetheless. The Flash director and Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter writer Seth Grahame-Smith wrote the script for The LEGO Batman Movie which is going to be directed by Chris McKay who was the animation supervisor for The LEGO Movie. The film will be released into theaters on May 26, 2017.

john wickFor this week’s Ass Whoppin Wednesday film, I wanted to check out a film from Keanu Reeves that came out in 2014. The film had garnered a lot of buzz among the internet and some of my friends and so I had to check out John Wick. Keanu plays John Wick, a man that is considered to be one of the best hitmen in the business and one of the most feared, but the man has since retired from the business and is trying to enjoy life. That is until his wife Helen (Bridget Moynahan) passes away and that is when everything seems to spiral out of control for him. One day, he gets a package from his wife and inside is a dog that she had bought for him before she passed away to help console him. Well after running into some Russians, one of them kills his dog and steals his car from him. He hears that the one that did that is the son of his former boss Viggo (Michael Nyqvist). So, John sets out on a mission to kill Viggo’s son Iosef (Alfie Allen) even though Viggo will try to stop it as best as he can. The film also stars Willem Dafoe (The Boondock Saints) as Marcus, Dean Winters (OZ) as Avi, Adrianne Palicki (Legion) as Ms. Perkins, Daniel Bernhardt (Bloodsport 2) as Kirill, John Leguizamo (Kick Ass 2) as Aureilo, Ian McShane (Death Race) as Winston, Lance Reddick (The Wire) as Charon, David Patrick Kelly (Commando) as Charlie, Kevin Nash (WWE Legend) as Francis, and the movie was directed by Chad Stahelski (The Matrix). Now before we get into the review of the film, let’s check out some stats.

john wick 2This has to be one of the most badass movies of 2014 and one of the best performances from Keanu Reeves since Point Break. There is non-stop action for most of the film and one of the cool parts is that you are introduced to a world that we have no idea about that exists among assassins. John has a lot of kills in this film as it registers at 79 altogether. As far as the origin story is concerned, all we know is that he was one of the most feared assassins that they called him the boogeyman. As I stated above, his love interest dies in the beginning and his dog is killed and I won’t give away who the other person that gets hurt is. I also want to say that this is definitely one of Adrianne Palicki’s best roles because she is also an absolute badass in the film. The beginning of the film will make you think that you know what happens in the end because the film begins with the end, but just watch and be amazed. One thing I did notice about the film as well is that there was a lot of MMA style fighting incorporated into how John Wick fought and Keith Jardine stars in the film. This is definitely one of my favorite films off the year and what a breath of fresh air this one was for action films after a lackluster year. I strongly recommend that everyone watches this especially if you are a fan of Keanu Reeves and because the scenes are gritty and the cinematography is fantastic. I am going to give the film four and the half fists out of five for a final grade.
