maxresdefault (3)Going into today’s Ass Whoopin Wednesday film, there were two reasons I chose the film The Man From U.N.C.L.E. with one being that it was directed by Guy Ritchie (Snatch) and the second being that it stars Superman himself Henry Cavill (Man Of Steel). The Man From U.N.C.L.E. takes us all the way back to the 1960’s and the cold war as our setting for the film. Cavill plays American CIA operative Napoleon Solo while Armie Hammer (The Social Network) plays KGB Agent Illya Kuryakin in a film where the two agents are forced to team together against one common enemy other than each other. There is a rumor that some Nazi enthusiasts are close to creating an atomic bomb and along with the help of the beautiful Gaby (Alicia Vikander) they will try to infiltrate and retrieve the bomb before it is completed. The film also stars Hugh Grant (Four Weddings And A Funeral) as Waverly, Elizabeth Debicki (The Great Gatsby) as Victoria, Luca Calvani (When In Rome) as Alexander, Sylvester Groth (Inglorious Basterds) as Uncle Rudi, Jared Harris (Sherlock Holmes: A Game Of Shadows) as Sanders, Christian Berkel (Valkyrie) as Udo, Misha Kuznetsov (25TH Hour) as Oleg, Marianna Di Martino as the desk clerk, and David Menkin (Zero Dark Thirty) as Jones. Before we check out the review of the film, let’s check out some stats:

Man from uncle stats

Film The Man From U.N.C.L.EI love doing the team ups as far as Ass Whoopin Wednesday is concerned because I feel it gives you more and it’s interesting to see the chemistry (especially if it’s there). We are going to start with Napoleon Solo (Cavill) and in the film he only has eight confirmed kills/knockouts as far as I can tell and they are spread out through the film. We find out his origin story when Armie’s character is being briefed about him and he has no love interest because he is a playboy. No one close to him as far as I can tell gets harmed in the film because it’s business as usual, but he does have a sexual conquest in the film (it’s implied). The big boss is defeated and he does it with style and you’ll have to watch for yourself to find out. As far as Armie’s character Illya is concerned he has about 13 kills in the film and we find out about his origin through Napoleon who was trying to one up him. He does have a love interest and she is kidnapped during the film by the antagonists. The movie in my opinion was very fun to watch especially with Henry Cavill who is Joe Cool in this film and he really embraces the role. I really thought that Armie and him made a great team onscreen which helped make the movie fun to watch. There is plenty of action in the film and some cool gadgets as well as some cool chase scenes. I just want to say that Alicia Vikander must be the new Hollywood it girl because she is everywhere lately from Ex Machina, The Danish Girl, and so much more within the past two years and going into the future. I wonder if they’ll be anymore films in this franchises future? Anyways, I am going to give it four fists out of five for a final grade.

man of steel titleFor this week’s Super Sunday, we are heading back into the DC Universe for one of the comics that basically made them who they are today. For a lot of us comic book fans that grew up in the 80’s and 90’s, Christopher Reeve was the man known as Superman in all of our eyes. In 2006, Warner Brothers and DC Comics decided to bring back Superman to the big screen considering things were hot for Marvel at the time with Spider-Man and X-men. The only problem is their 2006 film Superman Returns was a huge flop and disappointment in the eyes of many fans. It would take seven years and for Christopher Nolan to dominate with his edgy and dark take on the Batman series with The Dark Knight Trilogy for DC and Warner to finally realize what they had to do with the Superman series and now we have 2013’s Man Of Steel. Henry Cavill (Immortals) stars as Clark Kent, Kal-El, or Superman as the film explores his origins of how he made it to Earth. Although in this film, we learn that General Zod (Michael Shannon) and the fact that Krypton was about to end was the reason for him travelling to Earth. Jor-El (Russell Crowe) and Lara (Ayelet Zurer) had to sacrifice their lives so that Kal could live on a new planet. That doesn’t stop Zod and his outlawed and banished team from trying to find Kal so that they can recover something that is key to their planet. The film stars Diane Lane (Chaplin) as Marta Kent, Kevin Costner (Dances With Wolves) as Jonathan Kent, Amy Adams (American Hustle) as Lois Lane, Laurence Fishburne (The Matrix) as Perry White, Antje Traue (5 Days Of War) as Faora-Ul, Richard Cetrone (Watchmen) as Tor-An, and the film was directed by Zack Snyder (300).

superman Visually, I think this film is out of this world and that expression, “This film is visually stunning” is 100% accurate about Man Of Steel. Where Superman Returns failed, this film made up for it in every category. There is a reason why this film won the superhero movie of the year award last year in the 3RD Annual Monster Entertainment Awards with 50% of the vote and it was because it was that badass. I can’t pinpoint one performance that wasn’t better than any other performance because the cast was superb and Michael Shannon played an excellent villain. The special effects were great and the cinematography was on point. The only thing is that I wasn’t used to the idea of the film having Superman meet Lois Lane before he starts to work at The Daily Planet. This was definitely one of my favorite films from 2013 and unfortunately we have to wait until 2016 to get the second film in the series Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice. which stars Ben Affleck as the new Batman, Jesse Eisenberg as Lex Luthor, and Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman. I am going to give this film an A for a final grade.
