metallicaIt’s Christmas time and I felt like be generous to all you rockers and metalheads out there by giving you a second album of the week. We are continuing our conquest of the top 50 metal albums of all time list that Loudwire.com and we have a bit of a controversial one for all of you. In the world today, there are several different types of Metallica fans with those that believe the band stopped making great albums after …And Justice For All and those that believe that the self titled album which is known passionately to fans as The Black Album was the beginning of the end of their favorite metal band. For James Hetfield (Lead Vocals/Rhythm Guitar), Kirk Hammett (Lead Guitar), Lars Ulrich (Drums), and Jason Newsted (Bass), The Black Album was about to launch the band into a new stratosphere. The album that was produced by Bob Rock (Bon Jovi, Motley Crue) was released on August 12, 1991 and it was a commercial success as it landed the band a Grammy for Best Metal Performance in 1992 and it was the first album from the band to debut at number one on the Billboard Top 200 Charts. It also went number one in the UK, Switzerland, Norway, New Zealand, Germany, Canada, and Australia as it sold over 16 million copies going 16X Platinum in the US. At the end of the 90’s, it was ranked 8TH on The Billboard’s Decade-end Charts.

metallica black album back1. Enter Sandman– The first single off the album that was written by Kirk Hammett as it moves at 123 beats per minute in this track that is all about nightmares and everything that happens due to them. This was actually the last song on the album that received lyrics. 5/5

2. Sad but True– One of the most bad ass songs on the album which was recorded in D standard tuning in this song that is all about addiction and how it controls your every move and thought of the day. 5/5

3. Holier Than Thou– an in your face track that still contains some elements of thrash about people who think because they are religious are better than you. 5/5

4. The Unforgiven– The first essential power ballad from the band that was different than Fade To Black, One, etc. The track’s lyrics deal with the theme of someone who tries his best, but struggles because there are those who would hold him down. 5/5

5. Wherever I May Roam– The track starts off with a gong and Sitar with a 12 stringed bass to give the effect of accented notes before Newsted switches back to a 4 string bass for the rest of the track. It features standard tuning (E A D G B E) and the track is about life on the road. 5/5

6. Don’t Tread On Me– There was a lot of sentiment over anti-America beliefs over …And Justice For All so this track was the response as Hetfield explains, “This is the other side of that. America is a fucking good place. I definitely think that. And that feeling came about from touring a lot. You find out what you like about certain places and you find out why you live in America, even with all the bad fucked-up shit. It’s still the most happening place to hang out.” 5/5

Metallica - Metallica -cd-7. Through the Never-a thrash like track that smashes through your speakers about how mankind looks to gain all the knowledge of the world, but we don’t understand how puny we really are in the universe. 5/5

8. Nothing Else Matters– The other ballad on the album that was initially written by Hetfield while he was on the phone with his girlfriend. It was never meant to be released until Lars heard it and then it was considered. It’s the only track on the album that Hetfield plays the guitar solo. 5/5

9. Of Wolf and Man– an incredible track that while it is talking about werewolves, it’s talking about our more animalistic side and how we have to conquer everything. It’s the point of where we become Of Wolf and Man. 5/5

10. The God That Failed-I have always loved the opening bass riff to this track that kicks it off along with Lars before James and Kirk come in. The track’s lyrics deal with the idea of a God that fails to heal it’s own because James’s mother died of Cancer after refusing medical attention believing that God would heal her. 5/5

11. My Friend of Misery– I have always loved the beginning of the track because the bass riff helps set up the mood of the track which is very dark. It’s about someone who sees their friend wallowing away in self loathing and pity. 5/5

12. The Struggle Within– The track opens up with a military cadence of sorts in the drum department as Kirk plays himself in as the song absolutely rips. The track is about someone who is just wasting away in their own paranoia. 5/5

My Final Thoughts– I am one of those people that believes that this is the best album the band ever wrote which is why it was so successful. They were tested by their producer to reach for the sky when it came to writing and it paid off. Why I love the whole album, my favorite tracks are still My Friend Of Misery and The God That Failed. I am giving the album five stars out of five for a final grade.

 

metallica-vs-overkillThere is a significance with today’s date and the newest edition of Cover Battle and I’ll explain it to you because it’s a special one. A couple of weeks ago, we had Van Halen take on Mott The Hoople as to who did You Really Got Me by The Kinks better. Well, you all voted and chose Van Halen as the better version. So back to today’s cover battle which is very special because on December 11, 2015 Motorhead would play their last ever show with Lemmy Kilmister who would sadly pass away on December 28, 2015. The last song that they ever played together was the classic 1979 track Overkill and we have chosen it as today’s cover battle track. This one maybe one of the best battles yet because it features a couple of juggernauts of metal as Metallica does battle with Overkill in who did the track Overkill better. It’s east vs west as Bay Area thrash legends Metallica take on New York thrash legends Overkill.

Metallica– The Bay Area Thrash legends back in 1998 released an all covers double album called Garage Inc.. The album contained B-side covers, covers, and even an old EP that had gone out of print since it’s release. The album also included a b-sides disc that was released with the Hero Of The Day single called Motörheadache which saw the band covering Motorhead songs including Overkill. The band stays pretty faithful to the original track with Jason Newsted playing some amazing bass with James Hetfield rocking the song on vocals. Check out Metallica’s version below:

Overkill– The New York thrash legends released an all covers album entitled Coverkill which featured them covering the likes of Jethro Tull, Kiss, Black Sabbath, and Motorhead’s Overkill. It seemed like a very natural move for the band considering the name of the band is the track itself. The version the band included on the album was a live rendition of the track Overkill and the band opens up with the same fury as Metallica, but the only difference is Bobby Ellsworth signature high pitched growl. I truly love D. D. Verni’s bass playing on the song as well as the drumming because they bring the fury of the song right into your face. Check out their version below:

File:Metallica - ...And Justice for All cover.jpgLast month we celebrated the 30TH anniversary of the release of Metallica’s Kill Em All and now we are celebrating a different release by Metallica. On August 25, 2013, …And Justice For All turned 25 years old which means it celebrates its silver anniversary (I believe). By the accounts of a lot of different people, this album signified that a lot of changes were going to come to the beloved Thrash metal genre and it signified the beginning of a new era. For starters, it was the first album to be recorded without Cliff Burton and the first with former Flotsam & Jetsam bassist Jason Newsted. It signified the end of a traditional thrash metal sound for Metallica as they took a more progressive metal approach with this album. Lars commented on the band’s change, “We took the Ride the Lightning and Master of Puppets concept as far as we could take it. There was no place else to go with the progressive, nutty, sideways side of Metallica, and I’m so proud of the fact that, in some way, that album is kind of the epitome of that progressive side of us up through the ’80s.” The albums lyrics were also very different and dark while being rooted in politics, inequality, and freedom of speech just being some of the topics. There is also a rumor that if you notice, you’ll barely hear the bass tracks because Metallica supposedly turned the bass down.

andOne of the most badass Metallica songs ever kicks off the album in the form of Blackened, a song that deals with the subject of the environment. I love the slow fade up tactic that Metallica chose for the track which signifies the beginning of the madness. It’s also the best drumming I have heard from Lars in my opinion and I love the breakdown after the 2:30 mark, it’s just punishing. …And Justice For All is the next track on the album and it’s a track that was inspired by the drummer Lars’s aggressive riff and drum patterns. Famed music critic Cosmo Lee once said that the song is, “”a linkage of blocks” rather than “a progressive opus”, because “the song is mid-paced and very playable. None of the riffs are that technical.” Eye Of The Beholder is another track that starts with a slow fade up as the track keeps building up and then it explodes into an all metal assault. The track is played at a conventional 4/4 rhythm while the chorus is famous for being played at a 12/8 time. The tracks lyrics deal with issues of limitations that are constantly placed on freedom of speech and freedom of expression. It makes sense considering the PMRC was hammering down on Heavy Metal at the time.

oneI hate to call the next track a power ballad, but that is exactly what One is. It’s the Grammy award winning track from the album whose lyrics are very anti-war. The song was inspired by a book by Dalton Trumbo that was called Johnny Got His Gun which was released in 1939 and dealt with a soldier who had lost all his limbs in battle.  The song begins in 4/4 time before it gradually switches in 3/4 and even 2/4 time. My favorite part of the song is the machine gun guitar build up with the double bass madness. Here is what James told Guitar World Magazine in 1991 regarding B-G modulation, “I had been fiddling around with that B-G modulation for a long time. The idea for the opening came from a Venom song called “Buried Alive”. The kick drum machine-gun part near the end wasn’t written with the war lyrics in mind, it just came out that way. We started that album with Mike Clink as producer. He didn’t work out so well, so we got Flemming to come over and save our asses.”

harvesterThe Shortest Straw is the next track on the record with it’s stop and smash playing in the beginning, it’s a song that deals with the topic of blacklisting. According to wikipedia, Harvester Of Sorrow is a song about, “a man who descends into madness, taking out his anger on his family. At the end of the song, it is hinted his sanity snaps and he murders them.” The song is a live staple at any Metallica show and deservedly so as the track hits you like a sledgehammer when it kicks off. Frayed Ends Of Sanity is the next track and it deals with the subject of a man who cannot live with the mania inside his head as he tries to become stronger than the demons (at least that’s what I get out of it). To Live Is To Die is the only song on the album where credit is given to Cliff Burton. The song samples a lot of different bass lines that Cliff had done before he passed away, but they were recorded with Jason for the album.

and justiceDyer’s Eve is the last track on the record and it’s a straight forward, cut ‘n dry message to his parents with some awesome and crazy stop and play metal madness in the beginning. Then out of nowhere the madness becomes even more maddening as Metallica embark on all out metal assault. This is definitely one of my favorite albums that started off with Mike Clink as the producer because Flemming Rasmussen wasn’t available when they needed him. After not being happy with what Mike Clink was doing, Flemming was finally brought in as he saved the day. Happy 25TH Anniversary to …And Justice For All you get four stars out of five.

The night that celebrates the genre that gets no respect, Metal, is back and due to the passing of a true Metal legend in Jeff Hanneman, the night was dedicated in his honor. The show kicked off with fellow Big Four legends Anthrax kicking into an amazing version of Caught In A Mosh. The band’s second song that they performed was off of Worship Music called Fight Em Till You Can’t and I have to say that I am so happy that Joey is the singer because he is just amazing. Anthrax ended their set by bringing out Phil Anselmo and Rex Brown to do This Love and dedicating it to Jeff Hanneman. They even ended the song with a little bit of Raining Blood just to top off the tribute. Chris Jericho was back for the fourth time to host the Fifth annual event.

Chuck Billy and Alex Skolnick of Testament would come out to introduce Dillinger Escape Plan who started off their set with Prancer and the singer,Greg Puciato, would bust his own head open during the set. For their second song or maybe their third song of the set, they would invite Chino Moreno of The Deftones to perform Behind The Wheel which was the only song I enjoyed from their set and it featured Greg shooting flames with a torch and the band smashing their equipment in typical rock/metal fashion.

After a heart felt tribute to Jeff Hanneman from Kerry King and Zakk Wylde, Heaven’s Basement came out to introduce Halestorm who started off their set with Love Bites. Before they kicked into I Miss The Misery, there was an amazing intro that featured some killer drumming from Arejay Hale. For their special guest, Halestorm brought out David Draiman to perform Led Zeppelin’s Whole Lotta Love and it was actually really good.

Heidi Sheppard and Carla Harvey of The Butcher Babies along with Jill Janus Of Huntress came out to introduce Five Finger Death Punch who started their earth shattering set with Burn It Down. In what turned out be a shocking announcement, Five Finger Death Punch revealed that they had two CD’s coming out within the next six months and one of the tracks from one featured their special guest for the second track. Rob Halford came out to perform Lift Me Up with them dressed in a priest outfit. To top that performance, Five Finger brought out Rob Zombie and John 5 to perform Thunderkiss 65 together on stage.

Maria Brink and Chris Howorth from In This Moment introduced Stone Sour to the stage as they opened up with Gone Sovereign. The second song the band performed was Absolute Zero and it absolutely rocked. Corey after the Zero was over said that before their guest came out, they were going to get the crowd started with their tribute to Sabbath as they began to play Children Of The Grave and sure enough during the song M. Shawn Crahan and Chris Fehn of Slipknot came out and performed with Stone Sour. It was absolutely off the charts and Corey definitely proved he deserved that vocalist of the year award.

One of the funniest incidents occurred  The Black Veil Brides were about to accept the award for best song of the year and the crowd was booing. Andy of BVB came right out and told the crowd off. Metal fans really hate The Black Veil Brides I guess. Papa Emeritus II of Ghost B.C. came out to introduce the one and only Danzig as he opened with Hammer Of The Gods not Mother according to the screen which would end up being the second track performed. Doyle Wolfgang von Frankenstein would eventually come out to perform Death Comes Ripping, Skulls and Last Caress with Danzig.

Phil Campbell and Lemmy Kilmister came out to introduce the one and only Metallica as they came out and opened with Disposable Heroes.
