movie-john-wick-chapter-2-latino-audio-bigOne of my favorite action movies over the last couple of years was the out of nowhere John Wick which starred Keanu Reeves (Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure) as the title character. It has been quite some time since the last Ass Whoopin Wednesday post and I figured the best film to transition back into it is none other than the sequel John Wick: Chapter 2. We all know that int he last film, John Wick’s dog which was a present from his dead wife was killed and that his car was stolen. He took care of the problem in the last film, but he still needs to get his car back and he does. The only problem for John is that he thinks things are finally over until an Italian mob boss (Riccardo Scamarcio) suckers him back into the game by blowing up his house. Now the only problem is that he believes that if he does this job for him that all will be over until the mob turns the tables and double crosses him by putting a seven million dollar bounty on his head. The film also stars Ian McShane (Death Race) as Winston, Ruby Rose (Orange Is The New Black) as Ares, Common (Smokin’ Aces) as Cassian, Lance Reddick (John Wick) as Charon, Laurence Fishburne (The Matrix) as The Bowery King, Claudia Gerini (The Passion Of The Christ) as Gianna D’Antonio, and the film was directed by Chad Stahelski (John Wick). Before we get into the review of the film, let’s check out some stats:

John Wick 2john-wick-chapter-2-10These series of films are becoming my favorite franchise and they definitely turn the ante up for this one. The first film he only had 78 kills and in this film he almost doubled it with 127 kills total. I am not sure if that is the most we’ve recorded here on Ass Whoopin Wednesdays, but it’s definitely a lot. There is still no origin story because we don’t find out much about his past other than the usual oh the boogeyman is here. There is no love interest because his wife is still dead, but he has a new dog though that has no name. The big boss was definitely defeated, but there is more trouble coming for poor John Wick. I honestly thought that when Laurence Fishburne showed up that we were going to get a Neo/Morpheus encounter, it just seemed like it was going to go there. The action sequences in the film are awesome and pretty intense plus there is some really cool kills that John has. One of the things I love about the film are the various characters that we see like the mute assassin/bodyguard, Common’s character, and the homeless beggars. It makes you believe that just about anyone could be an assassin like the random sumo wrestling looking guy. It keeps you hooked in and ready to see who shows up next. There is nothing Oscar worthy about this film, but it’s fun and that is all some of us want in our action films. I am going to give this one 4.7 fists out of five for a final grade.

JM_MoP_1For today’s Ass Whoopin Wednesday film, I wanted to check out something else from Keanu Reeves after the news I had heard about John Wick 2. I have always been curious about Johnny Mnemonic and I figured what better time than now and we are promoting a Mixed tag team (man and woman) match this week. In the distant future of 2021, things are a lot different on the planet Earth as corporations now runs things in the world. The way information is delivered has also changed as human couriers named Mnemonics upload information into their heads. Johnny (Reeves) is a courier who agrees to carry an unusually large amount of information that will prove to be dangerous. What I mean by dangerous is that the Yakuza who basically do the dirty work for corporations wants the info in his head and with the help of his new bodyguard Jane (Dina Myer), he will have to do his best to get the information to the proper place before he dies because of it. The film also stars Ice-T (New Jack City) as J-Bone, Henry Rollins (Heat) as Spyder, Dolph Lundgren (Rocky IV) as Street Preacher, Udo Kier (Flesh For Frankenstein) as Ralfi, Tracy Tweed (Sunset Heat) as Pretty, and the film was directed by Robert Longo. Before we get into the review, let’s check out some stats:

johnny-mnemonic statsjohnny-mnemonic-1995-14-gAs far as the stats are concerned, the numbers are pretty low even for both of them. We will start with Dina Myers character Jane. She has the most knock outs/kills out of the both of them with nine and she has no origin story other than she is infected with the black shakes (which is common in 2021). Now as far as the love interest one is concerned, I placed a question mark there because I am not sure if Keanu and her are a thing in this film even though they do kiss. Everybody she knows like Spyder are getting taken out because of what Johnny carries and the big boss is defeated. Johnny (Reeves) has about seven kills/knock outs in the film and he has no origin story other than the fact that he is a courier. Nobody he knows that would affect him is getting taken out and the bog boss is defeated. The concept of the film was cool and it kind of looked at society back in the 1990’s. Think about HIV, AIDS, Cancer were all of a sudden a huge topic everywhere you looked, but yet there was no cure. There is too much money to be made by the Pharmaceutical companies especially if there really was a cure for all these illnesses. The part that was just too cheesy for me was Dolph Lundgren in this film as the street preacher. He’s an assassin that dresses up like Jesus telling you that salvation has come. Give me a break! Dina Meyer on the other hand was very enjoyable to watch on screen and Keanu was Keanu. Other than that, the film was enjoyable to say the least. I am going to give the film three fists out of five for a final grade.

River’s Edge is definitely one of my top five films to star Keanu Reevees for awesome and dark the film is. The film also stars Crispin Glover, Ione Skye, Daniel Roebuck, Dennis Hopper, and so many more in this film about a high school slacker nobody who decides to kill his girlfriend and he shows it off to the rest of the group. The reaction that the friends give is almost just as perplexing as the crime itself because some try to cover it up while others try to do what’s right. It’s an amazing film that also featured a pretty killer soundtrack if you are a fan of metal like Slayer, Fates Warning, Hallows Eve, Agent Orange, and our featured act for Soundtrack Saturday in Reggae act Burning Spear. Burning Spear provided the track Happy Day and it’s a nice balance to the soundtrack as it gives you something a little different to listen to. Cheeeck it out below and check out the film River’s Edge.

John-WickLast year, Keanu Reeves was featured in a film that absolutely suited him well in John Wick which was a film about an ex-hitman who goes for revenge after some Russian mobsters killed his dog and stole his car. The film only grossed about 40 million in the US, but it made 130 million worldwide. It was the growing popularity of the film once it was released on VHS that prompted the studio to OK a sequel to the film and now we have some news for you on whose coming back and whose coming aboard for the first time. Obviously, Keanu Reeves returns to reprise his role as John Wick, but he is joined by returning cast members John Leguizamo who plays chop shop owner Aurelio,  Lance Reddick (White House Down) as Charon, the concierge from the Continental Hotel, Tom Sadowski (Wild) as Jimmy, Ian McShane (Death Race) as Continental Hotel Owner Winston, and Bridget Moynahan as John’s late wife who we presume will be for flashbacks. The new cast members that were announced for the film are Ruby Rose (Resident Evil: The Final Chapter), Riccardo Scamarcio (Burnt), and Peter Stormare (22 Jump Street). We hear that rapper/actor extraordinaire Common will be in the film to play the major villain. There is no word on a release date, but as soon as I hear something I will let all of you know.

170px-Robin_Williams_2008In other news, I was not aware of the fact that the late Robin Williams had recorded tons of audio recordings as Genie when he filmed the original Aladdin which could have meant that Disney could make a sequel even after his death. Unfortunately, you will have to hold your horses on any chance of that happening according to a stipulation in the late actors will. Apparently, there is a stipulation in his will that prevents Disney from using anything that has to do with Robin Williams for at least 25 years. That is sad news indeed for anyone who was a fan of the brilliant performance Robin made as Genie. It looks like it won’t be until 2040 until Robin Williams will be in a film again as Genie and that is even if Disney still goes forward with that.

Mariah-CareyIn some more animated news, The LEGO Batman Movie is happening which is super exciting considering how awesome The LEGO Movie was. Will Arnett was one of the highlights of the film when he played Batman and we know that he is coming back to play the caped crusader in the film, but there is some strange news in my opinion. Mariah Carey is apparently in negotiations to play none other than Commissioner Gordon. I know that she has done some voice work before as well as acting, but as Commissioner Gordon? I am not sure quite how I feel about that, but it will be interesting to see nonetheless. The Flash director and Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter writer Seth Grahame-Smith wrote the script for The LEGO Batman Movie which is going to be directed by Chris McKay who was the animation supervisor for The LEGO Movie. The film will be released into theaters on May 26, 2017.

For today’s Soundtrack Saturday track, I decided to pick a song from one of my favorite bands who is also happening to release a new album in 2015 which is Faith No More. The band is gearing up to release their album Sol Invictus on May 19TH, but for right now, we are diving into their catalog to check out the track The Perfect Crime. The Perfect Crime appeared in The Bill And Ted’s Bogus Journey film which was released back in 1991. The film starred Keanu Reeves and Alex Winter reprising their roles as Bill and Ted, but in this film they were battling evil clones of themselves. The track The Perfect Crime appears in the part when both Bill and Teds head to Vasquez Rocks park in the van. The song is everything you would want from a Faith No More track with Mike Patton’s signature pitch changes through out the track matched with the sick funk bass line. The band was still touring for The Real Thing while they were preparing to write and release Angel Dust so you get the best of both worlds right in this track. Check out the track below and check out the film because rumor has it that they are close to making the third film in the series.

rattFor today’s soundtrack Saturday track, we are going to one of my all time favorite Keanu Reeves films in Point Break which co-stars Patrick Swayze, Gary Busey, Lori Petty, and even The Red Hot Chili Pepper’s own Anthony Kiedis in this bad ass surfer/heist movie. The film contains one of my all time favorite Ratt songs that is truly also one of their most bad ass songs in Nobody Rides For Free. The song starts off very melodic with a great guitar riff and a bad ass bass line to go along with it from Juan Croucier. The song has tons of swagger and coolness that just oozes out of it and overall it’s just an amazing rock song that features a kick ass guitar solo from Warren DeMartini. The song actually fits the film perfectly as well in this story of bank robbers who end up being surfers as well as the cool, calm, and collective agent Johnny Utah who is on the case. The soundtrack also featured songs from The Concrete Blondes, Shark Island, Little Caesar, L.A. Guns, and so many more. Check out the song below and check out the film if you never have before you see the remake that is coming out this summer.
