october rustWhen you think of Goth Metal, there is usually only one band that I find synonymous with those words and that is Type O Negative. They were the band that brought the brand to the mainstream and made it cool to buy and bands like Him can thank them for that. Besides the band’s breakthrough record Bloody Kisses, one of my all time favorite Type O Negative records is October Rust which was also their fourth studio album and the first to not incorporate so much of the doom metal sound they were known for. Instead, they settled for more ballads and one heck of a cover song to boot. The album once again featured the late and great Peter Steele (Lead Vocals, Bass Guitar), Kenny Hickey (Guitar), Josh Silver (Keyboards), and for the first time Johnny Kelly (Drums). The album was released on August 20, 1996 and it was produced by Steele and Silver and it featured some new techniques never employed before (like joke intros and abrupt endings). The album peaked at number 42 on the Billboard Top 200 charts while finishing in the top 10 in Sweden, Germany, Finland, and Austria as well being certified Gold for selling 500,000 copies.

october rust back1. Bad Ground– This is the first time that the band employed a joke intro into one of their albums. It basically contains just low level buzzing to make you think that your speakers are not plugged in correctly. 4/5

2. Untitled- It’s basically the real intro to the album where the band asks if you enjoyed their joke 4/5

3. Love You To Death– One of my favorite Type O Negative songs that opens up with a cool piano track before the comes in with their distorted attack in this gothic love song about a guy who is in love with a girl more than she is him. 5/5

4. Be My Druidess– Type O was the best at getting a point across with so few words and they do in this song about love in the gothic/black sense. The track is like a heavier version of post punk like Joy Division. 5/5

5. Green Man-a very cool track lyrically where he is talking about an ancient diety that pre-dates Christianity. He is sort of symbolic of nature in the sense that he dies when winter comes only to be reborn in spring. 4.5/5

6. Red Water (Christmas Mourning)– a kind of sad song about someone who has lost some loved ones and it’s Christmas morning and he is drowning in his sorrows. 4/5

7. My Girlfriend’s Girlfriend-This track is another one of my favorites where it sort of has that 70’s psychedelic sound with the keys mixed with the distorted instruments. The track is basically about Peter wanting to bang his bi-curious girlfriend’s girlfriend. 5/5

october rust cd8. Die With Me– The track starts off like they are in an airport when all of a sudden the clean channel guitars kick in and Peter sings about the one that got away. 4/5

9. Burnt Flowers Fallen– Another track where with the least amount of words, he manages to say a lot in this track about how he has come to grips with the fact that the girl he loves is no longer his. 4.5/5

10. In Praise Of Bacchus-Bacchus is the Roman equivalent to the Greek God of wine in Dionysus, but in this track he is drowning in his sorrows with the help of wine. 4.5/5

11. Cinnamon Girl-The band’s heavy and awesome cover of the Neil Young classic. 5/5

12. The Glorious Liberation of the People’s Technocratic Republic of Vinnland by the Combined Forces of the United Territories of Europa– an intro track of sorts with a really long title that sounds like it’s a liberating day in this fictitious country. 4/5

13. Wolf Moon (Including Zoanthropic Paranoia)– This is a track that is certifiably love making music done Type O Negative style. There are a lot of metaphors in this track and I think the werewolf element is just symbolism for power. 5/5

14. Haunted– a track whose lyrics are profound in what they are about. The song is about being haunted by visions of a love that maybe you lost or can’t have and when you try to sleep at night, you have trouble cause you are thinking of her. 5/5

15. Untitled– an Outro to the album where the band downplays the making of the record. 4/5

My Final Thoughts– An amazing record by an amazing band that decided to take a chance with this record and it paid off. This was actually the first album I had ever heard from the band before I dug any deeper into their catalog. My favorite tracks besides the obvious two are Wolf Moon and Haunted. My least favorite tracks are the intro tracks especially The Glorious Liberation of the People’s Technocratic… I am going to give the album 4.5 stars out of five for a final grade.

13151558_10154142704378866_6527274700022246028_nI have to be honest and say that I was going to lose my lid if the rumors about Scott Stapp, the former Creed singer, joining Stone Temple Pilots. That in my opinion was going to be the worst possible news ever, but it turns out the rumors were wrong about him joining STP, but he is joining a band that had ties with Scott Weiland. Scott Stapp announced via a statement that he was joining Art Of Anarchy which Scott was in for a very short time. Here is his statement:

I wanted to clarify any confusions on Stone Temple Pilots and my comment. First off, Scott Weiland in STP is irreplaceable. I was recently asked what I’m currently working on in an interview and could not reveal details or announce this new project. This led the interviewer to assume it was STP and he eagerly kept asking for more details. Evidently my response caused confusion.
I’m excited to share I’ve been working with Art Of Anarchy band who’s members are Ron “Bumble Foot” Thal, formerly of Guns N Roses, John Moyer of Disturbed and Jon and Vince Votta. Original announcement was slated for July along with our first single and album to follow but happy to share this announcement sooner to clarify.
Art Of Anarchy is the project that I was referring to in the interview not STP. Scott Weiland was a part of Art of Anarchy and that’s the six degrees of separation I was referring to. Always been a fan of STP and I wish them all the best in their search for a new singer.
Allow me to introduce Art Of Anarchy. Stay tuned.

Scott Weiland recorded vocals for the only release that Art Of Anarchy has to date, but when it came time to tour, he proclaimed that he was not the singer for the band and that he wouldn’t record with them. So, having no lead singer was the perfect opportunity for Stapp to join the band considering all the members of Creed are busy with other projects.

Liv-SinSince we are on the topic of people announcing new projects or joining bands, I have some news regarding former Sister Sin vocalist Liv Jagrell. Swedish rock outfit Sister Sin announced that they were no longer going to be a band toward the end of last year which left Liv Jagrell with nothing to do. Well have no fear because she has just announced that she is going to continue her career under the name Liv Sin. For me it has never been an option to stop singing. I live for the stage and for my fans. I still miss Sister Sin, but I am very excited to work on my own project, and I can promise it will not be some soft pop rock. This is going to be metal deluxe, because that’s who I am!” which is what Jagrell said in an interview. In a statement on Facebook, she said, “So guys, here is some news for you, I’m not leaving you. I have a management who believes in me, musicians that I’m making songs with and now I just have to find a label to support me. Stay tuned and have patience! (That goes for me too haha).” Stay tuned here for more info as it becomes available.

1The end of 2015 into where we are now in 2016 has been a very rough year for the music and entertainment world as we mourn the loss of so many greats. One of those greats that we lost was the great Lemmy Kilmister of Motorhead. That was one of the toughest losses we suffered so far (besides Bowie), but we have something coming out to help us remember him. On June 10TH, UDR is releasing a Live CD/DVD entitled Clean Your Clock which is a live performance recorded back in November during the band’s performance in Munich. The album features classics like Orgasmatron, Overkill, Ace Of Spades, and Bomber which you can actually check out here. According to Loudwire.com, here are some of the different formats it’s available in, “The disc will be available in numerous configurations including a standalone CD, DVD with CD, Blu-ray with CD and colored double vinyl in gatefold with pop-up art. In addition, there will be a box set containing the aforementioned vinyl, DVD, audio CD and Motorhead metal medal along with a limited edition box set with the option of a silver or gold medal and digital download.”

downloadFans of classic rock groups like The Rolling Stones, Paul McCartney, Bob Dylan, Roger Waters, and The Who have something to drool over as The Desert Trip was officially announced. Now you may be asking what in the hell is The Desert Trip and what do these acts have to do with that. Well, The Desert Trip is a three day festival that is taking place at the same place as Coachella (Empire Polo Club in Indio, CA) and each of the three nights only features two performers. The Rolling Stones and Bob Dylan headline Friday while Paul McCartney and Neil Young are Saturday while Roger Waters and The Who close out the festival on Sunday. To see all information regarding ticket prices, hotels, and such, please visit the festival website here. This just might be a once in a lifetime kind of show and knowing the way 2016 has been going, I might just have to spend the dough.

Prong is one of the most influential metal bands on the scene as the likes of Jonathan Davis (Korn), Trent Reznor (Nine Inch Nails), and Ryan Clark (Demon Hunter) have all claimed that the band has influenced their music in some way shape or form. They’ve toured with the likes of Pantera, Sepultura, Life Of Agony, and so many more during their career. That is why I find it interesting when a band like theirs gets ready to release an all covers album and I say that because you get to find out what kind of music inspired them. The album Songs From The Black Hole features the band covering the likes of Sisters Of Mercy, Butthole Surfers, Discharge, Black Flag, Neil Young, and today’s cover of the week courtesy of Bad Brains in the track Banned In DC. The track features all the fury that the original had, but with a more updated sound and amazing playing by Tommy Victor and company as they go punk on this record. It’s a good starting point for everyone to discover new music courtesy of Prong. Check out the track below and look for the album to drop March 31ST via eOne Music.

For the first Cover Of The Week post on this blog, I wanted to promote an artist that has been around plus another artist that deserves some attention. It also helps that the cover song has been covered by others like Zakk Wylde and it’s from a man that is a well respected and gifted songwriter in Neil Young. Michael Sweet is the lead singer of famed 80’s Christian metal band Stryper who decided earlier in 2014 that he would release another solo album titled I’m Not Your Suicide. When it came to recording the Neil Young cover of Heart Of Gold, he decided to have a guest sing harmony on the track. That someone is the daughter of one of the icons of Thrash Metal in Megadeth’s Dave Mustaine. Her name is Electra Mustaine and she has an amazing voice as you’ll hear in the track. Apparently, Sweet and Mustaine were friends and Michael felt she added another much need element to the track and thank God (no pun intended) that he did because the track actually came out amazing. This is what covers are supposed to be like when one artist takes another artists song and he interprets it in his way. Check out the cover below and check out Electra Mustaine if you can.
