RobZombie_Korn_SiteTeaser_550x307png17 years ago, Korn and Rob Zombie teamed up for the Rock Is Dead Tour, they would team up together 14 years later for the Night Of The Living Dreads Tour, and now they have teamed up again for the Return Of The Dreads Tour which stopped at The Xfinity Center in Mansfield, MA with upstarts In This Moment as the opener. The show definitely promised to be a memorable show with two of the three bands being very theatrical in their performances as well as this was a hometown show for Rob Zombie (originally from Haverhill). The show was definitely a mixture of sex, horror, and heavy metal as it was a beautiful night for some metal mayhem. In This Moment opened up the show with their band members dressed like demon soldiers of the dead while Maria Brink changed her outfits for every song along with her half naked dancers. I do have to admit though that Brink definitely commanded the crowd as they blazed through tracks like Sick Like Me, Sex Metal Barbie, and show closer Blood. The best way to describe her would be that Maria Brink is what you would get if Marilyn Manson and Lady Gaga had a child.

IMG_6073After they were done, we knew that it was time for one of the greatest stage shows in all of metal besides Alice Cooper in Rob Zombie. Zombie hit the stage precisely at 8:05 PM with opener Dead City Radio and The New Gods Of Supertown before we were treated with a giant devil walking onstage during the next song Superbeast. From then on, he never looked back as we were treated to the macabre with a lethal dose of old and new tracks. Rob was definitely the highlight of the night as he and the band showed that they were true showman with all of the costumes, the props, the horror videos, and even a little Tone Loc Wild Thing cover before the band jumped right into concert staple Living Dead Girl. The crowd was treated by a visit from Rob’s wife actress Sheri Moon Zombie as she was delivering aliens for the track Well, Everybody’s F**king in a U.F.O. and they showed their adoration for her. He would blaze through classics like Never Gonna Stop (The Red, Red Kroovy), House Of 1000 Corpses, Thunderkiss 65, before tearing the roof off the place with their cover of We’re An American Band. He would show a trailer for his newest film 31 before ending the show with set classic Dragula.

IMG_6099Korn was the last band to take the set and they were a huge difference from the previous bands because it was all about the music. There are no theatrics when it comes to Korn, they basically have a bunch of lights, screens, and their high octane brand of crushing metal. The band sounded pretty good as they opened the set with the punishing Right Now before heading into the classic Here To Stay. Of course, Korn have a new album coming out in October so it’s only natural the band kick right into a new track Rotting In Vain before they dug deep into their catalog playing classics like Somebody Someone, Did My Time, Y’All Want A Single, and Make Me Bad. The highlight of the night for me came when singer Jonathan Davis brought out the bagpipes for Shoots And Ladders which ended with a snippet of Metallica’s One. When it came to Nu-Metal, there was absolutely no one better and Korn proved that as they brought all the energy you would want from a Korn show. The band finished off the night playing classics like Blind (which the crowd went nuts for), Twist, Got The Life, Falling Away From Me, and the closer Freak On A Leash. Overall, it was one heck of a night as we relived what was great about the 90’s and like Jonathan had said during the show (not an exact quote) that it was cool to have a place where all metal heads could meet to celebrate the music they loved. This was definitely one of my favorite shows of the year. The concert gets an A- overall for a final grade.

big-four-of-thrashI really love doing these what if’s because there fun to imagine if they were true and it really happened. I am always searching the internet for the next what if and I think I have a good one this time around that will please metal fans and video game geeks all the same. If you were born before or during the 80’s then you will definitely remember the music of Nintendo which was all in 8-bit. Well, what if they had created a video game back in the day based on The Big Four of Thrash Metal (which is Metallica, Megadeth, Slayer, and Anthrax)? You’re definitely wondering what it would sound like and I have to tell you that I think it’s pretty awesome. One of the other great elements of the video is the actual recreation of scenes and how amazing it sounds. So, I have the actual video for all of you to enjoy and bask in the wonders of fantasy which was created by Loudwire and Filthy Frackers. This is definitely a game that I would have picked up back in the day!

Over the past year, we have seen all types of covers on the internet of amazing metal songs covered with non metal instruments. We have ukulele covers of Slayer, bluegrass covers of Iron Maiden and Slayer, and now we have a medieval cover of a Metallica song. Unlike all of the other covers which were discovered on Youtube, this one was on a TV show on live television in Belarus. The show was called Legends Live and it was aired on Belarus’s OHT channel where Stary Olsa played One by Metallica which was off of the band’s 1987 hit …And Justice For All. The band’s interpretation of the song is off the hook especially the way one of the players plays the Kirk Hammett’s opening part on a recorder. Unfortunately, I was wondering how the band was going to cover the high octane part with the famous double bass assault by Lars, but they cut the song short to Three minutes and some change. Not to fear though because you should watch this just to be amazed. So, check out Stary Olsa’s cover below:

I am loving the covers that you are seeing all over Youtube of metal songs, but done with different types of instruments like the banjo covers of Iron Maiden or the ukulele cover of Slayer. Now we have a very unique and awesome cover of another member of The Big Four and the instrument has 18 to 21 strings and bridges in a Chinese Guzheng. The picks that Michelle Kwan (not to be confused with the figure skater) are called DaiMao and are usually made out of hawksbill. You definitely need to check out this cover because it is absolutely amazing and beautiful. She covers Metallica’s One and the Guzheng really enhances the music. The other point I want to make is how amazing metal is that you can translate metal from electric guitars to just about any instrument in the world and it sounds just as amazing and cool. I recently read an article that stated that some our favorite classical music maestros would have been metal musicians if they were alive today and that metal fans share a passion for classical music and vice-versa. File:Metallica - ...And Justice for All cover.jpgLast month we celebrated the 30TH anniversary of the release of Metallica’s Kill Em All and now we are celebrating a different release by Metallica. On August 25, 2013, …And Justice For All turned 25 years old which means it celebrates its silver anniversary (I believe). By the accounts of a lot of different people, this album signified that a lot of changes were going to come to the beloved Thrash metal genre and it signified the beginning of a new era. For starters, it was the first album to be recorded without Cliff Burton and the first with former Flotsam & Jetsam bassist Jason Newsted. It signified the end of a traditional thrash metal sound for Metallica as they took a more progressive metal approach with this album. Lars commented on the band’s change, “We took the Ride the Lightning and Master of Puppets concept as far as we could take it. There was no place else to go with the progressive, nutty, sideways side of Metallica, and I’m so proud of the fact that, in some way, that album is kind of the epitome of that progressive side of us up through the ’80s.” The albums lyrics were also very different and dark while being rooted in politics, inequality, and freedom of speech just being some of the topics. There is also a rumor that if you notice, you’ll barely hear the bass tracks because Metallica supposedly turned the bass down.

andOne of the most badass Metallica songs ever kicks off the album in the form of Blackened, a song that deals with the subject of the environment. I love the slow fade up tactic that Metallica chose for the track which signifies the beginning of the madness. It’s also the best drumming I have heard from Lars in my opinion and I love the breakdown after the 2:30 mark, it’s just punishing. …And Justice For All is the next track on the album and it’s a track that was inspired by the drummer Lars’s aggressive riff and drum patterns. Famed music critic Cosmo Lee once said that the song is, “”a linkage of blocks” rather than “a progressive opus”, because “the song is mid-paced and very playable. None of the riffs are that technical.” Eye Of The Beholder is another track that starts with a slow fade up as the track keeps building up and then it explodes into an all metal assault. The track is played at a conventional 4/4 rhythm while the chorus is famous for being played at a 12/8 time. The tracks lyrics deal with issues of limitations that are constantly placed on freedom of speech and freedom of expression. It makes sense considering the PMRC was hammering down on Heavy Metal at the time.

oneI hate to call the next track a power ballad, but that is exactly what One is. It’s the Grammy award winning track from the album whose lyrics are very anti-war. The song was inspired by a book by Dalton Trumbo that was called Johnny Got His Gun which was released in 1939 and dealt with a soldier who had lost all his limbs in battle.  The song begins in 4/4 time before it gradually switches in 3/4 and even 2/4 time. My favorite part of the song is the machine gun guitar build up with the double bass madness. Here is what James told Guitar World Magazine in 1991 regarding B-G modulation, “I had been fiddling around with that B-G modulation for a long time. The idea for the opening came from a Venom song called “Buried Alive”. The kick drum machine-gun part near the end wasn’t written with the war lyrics in mind, it just came out that way. We started that album with Mike Clink as producer. He didn’t work out so well, so we got Flemming to come over and save our asses.”

harvesterThe Shortest Straw is the next track on the record with it’s stop and smash playing in the beginning, it’s a song that deals with the topic of blacklisting. According to wikipedia, Harvester Of Sorrow is a song about, “a man who descends into madness, taking out his anger on his family. At the end of the song, it is hinted his sanity snaps and he murders them.” The song is a live staple at any Metallica show and deservedly so as the track hits you like a sledgehammer when it kicks off. Frayed Ends Of Sanity is the next track and it deals with the subject of a man who cannot live with the mania inside his head as he tries to become stronger than the demons (at least that’s what I get out of it). To Live Is To Die is the only song on the album where credit is given to Cliff Burton. The song samples a lot of different bass lines that Cliff had done before he passed away, but they were recorded with Jason for the album.

and justiceDyer’s Eve is the last track on the record and it’s a straight forward, cut ‘n dry message to his parents with some awesome and crazy stop and play metal madness in the beginning. Then out of nowhere the madness becomes even more maddening as Metallica embark on all out metal assault. This is definitely one of my favorite albums that started off with Mike Clink as the producer because Flemming Rasmussen wasn’t available when they needed him. After not being happy with what Mike Clink was doing, Flemming was finally brought in as he saved the day. Happy 25TH Anniversary to …And Justice For All you get four stars out of five.
