movie-john-wick-chapter-2-latino-audio-bigOne of my favorite action movies over the last couple of years was the out of nowhere John Wick which starred Keanu Reeves (Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure) as the title character. It has been quite some time since the last Ass Whoopin Wednesday post and I figured the best film to transition back into it is none other than the sequel John Wick: Chapter 2. We all know that int he last film, John Wick’s dog which was a present from his dead wife was killed and that his car was stolen. He took care of the problem in the last film, but he still needs to get his car back and he does. The only problem for John is that he thinks things are finally over until an Italian mob boss (Riccardo Scamarcio) suckers him back into the game by blowing up his house. Now the only problem is that he believes that if he does this job for him that all will be over until the mob turns the tables and double crosses him by putting a seven million dollar bounty on his head. The film also stars Ian McShane (Death Race) as Winston, Ruby Rose (Orange Is The New Black) as Ares, Common (Smokin’ Aces) as Cassian, Lance Reddick (John Wick) as Charon, Laurence Fishburne (The Matrix) as The Bowery King, Claudia Gerini (The Passion Of The Christ) as Gianna D’Antonio, and the film was directed by Chad Stahelski (John Wick). Before we get into the review of the film, let’s check out some stats:

John Wick 2john-wick-chapter-2-10These series of films are becoming my favorite franchise and they definitely turn the ante up for this one. The first film he only had 78 kills and in this film he almost doubled it with 127 kills total. I am not sure if that is the most we’ve recorded here on Ass Whoopin Wednesdays, but it’s definitely a lot. There is still no origin story because we don’t find out much about his past other than the usual oh the boogeyman is here. There is no love interest because his wife is still dead, but he has a new dog though that has no name. The big boss was definitely defeated, but there is more trouble coming for poor John Wick. I honestly thought that when Laurence Fishburne showed up that we were going to get a Neo/Morpheus encounter, it just seemed like it was going to go there. The action sequences in the film are awesome and pretty intense plus there is some really cool kills that John has. One of the things I love about the film are the various characters that we see like the mute assassin/bodyguard, Common’s character, and the homeless beggars. It makes you believe that just about anyone could be an assassin like the random sumo wrestling looking guy. It keeps you hooked in and ready to see who shows up next. There is nothing Oscar worthy about this film, but it’s fun and that is all some of us want in our action films. I am going to give this one 4.7 fists out of five for a final grade.

mikeFor this week’s Tuesday Stand Up special, I wanted to check out a comedy special from someone that I hadn’t seen before and it was new like made in 2017. The comedian I chose for today is Mike Birbiglia and you may know him as Danny Pearson from Orange Is The New Black or you may remember him from films like Popstar: Never Stop Never StoppingThe Fault In Our StarsTrainwreck, or Sleepwalk With Me. Well. Mike just released a comedy special on Netfix entitled Mike Birbiglia- Thank God For Jokes which was recorded at The Brooklyn Academy Of Music-Harvey Theater. In the special, he tackles all sorts of subjects like the Jimmy Kimmel Intro Video, jokes, non offensive jokes, on time people vs late people, Yoga, inner thoughts, being broke, getting pulled over and arrested, Jesus and church, Hymns, not cursing at shows, The Muppets, nuts on a plane, Catsachusetts, Jared Leto, and so much more in this hilarious special from the Massachusetts native.

mike 2This was a very interesting comedy special to say the least and do not misconstrue my words because you have to read everything I say. I am going to give Mike Birbiglia one thing and that he has a very interesting approach to stand up comedy that is very calm. He has a certain zen about himself when he is on there and his style is very unique where he is almost a storyteller when he is up there in front of people. The whole special is essentially about this time he had to work the Gotham City Awards and he intertwines all these stories around it. One of the things I loved about his show was the crowd interaction he had whether it was constantly making the people that were late to his show a part of a running joke or just his overall crowd interactions that happened during it.The joke about Catsachusetts is pretty funny as well and maybe I connect with it from a personal connection since he is from Massachusetts. If you enjoy smart comedy then this is the guy to watch because he is funny in my opinion and he has a lot of great material too. I look forward to whatever else he has planned for the future. That is why I am going to give the special an A- for a final grade. By the way, check out the joke involving Jared Leto, it’s hilarious.

As always, we are giving you the fans two music videos of the week with one being on the rock side of life while the other is more on the metal side. What we have here for you right now is from the rock side and it’s American punk rock band Against Me! which features transgender singer Laura Jane Grace. Some of the best videos are the ones that have something visual to glue us to the screen like a story, etc. That is exactly what Against Me! did with their new video for the track 333 which is off their upcoming record Shape Shift With Me (due out September 16TH). The video is very cinematic and it was directed by actress Ione Skye, who all of you most likely remember as John Cusack’s love interest in the classic 80’s film Say Anything. I know her for that film and one of my favorite 80’s films River’s Edge. The video follows a 60′ housewife (played by Orange Is The New Black’s Natasha Lyonne) who seems to be living the good life, but man is she obsessed with cleaning. The video also stars Bates Motel star Andrew Howard, but not only is the video great, but the song is good too. Skye talked about the video saying, “This project attracted a lot of talented people: an incredible director of photography, producer, costume designer, editor and set designer. I felt very supported and inspired.” Check it out below:

341892-the-bourne-legacyWe are exactly nine days away from the release of the fifth film in the Bourne saga entitled Jason Bourne. Once again we are taking the time to watch all of the films in the saga for Ass Whoopin Wednesdays and we have The Bourne Legacy which is the first film not to feature Matt Damon. You see the government is now dealing with the after effects of the last film and they call upon Col Eric Byer, USAF, Ret. (Edward Norton) who decides to eliminate any asset that there is out there. The only problem for him is that one asset that goes by the name of Aaron Cross (Jeremy Renner) refuses to be a victim of that decision so he goes looking for answers and gets help from a doctor (Rachel Weisz) who was also deemed expendable. The film also stars Scott Glenn (Urban Cowboy) as Ezra Kramer, Donna Murphy (Spider-Man 2) as Dita Mandy, Stacy Keach (American History X) as Adm Mark Turso USN Ret., Oscar Isaac (X-Men: Apocalypse) as Outcome # 3, Zeljko Ivanek (Donnie Brasco) as Dr. Donald Foite, Corey Stoll (This Is Where I Leave You) as Zev Vandel, Michael Chernus (Orange Is The New Black) as Arthur Ingram, and the film was directed by Tony Gilroy (Duplicity). Before we get into the review of the film, let’s check out some stats:

Bourne Legacy Stats

the-bourne-legacy-movie-poster-27As far as the stats are concerned, Aaron Cross has about 12 1/2 kills/knockouts and that half is because Rachel Weisz puts the finishing touches on a villain. We do not essentially know much about Aaron Cross even though we saw some flashbacks, but it just wasn’t enough. I think you can pretty much figure out that Rachel Weisz’s character ends up becoming a love interest and someone he bunks with is killed and Rachel is also under attack now. The big boss is defeated in the film, but as usual you’ll have to see for yourself how it gets done. As far as the spectrum of all the films are concerned, this isn’t the best in series, but it’s actually a pretty good film. I feel like this one is a little more on the Taken side of things only because Jeremy Renner’s character is resourceful and he uses his surroundings to benefit himself like Liam Neeson did. One my favorite scenes in the film is the chase scene in Thailand which is pretty bad ass. One of the other scenes is when Jeremy Renner’s character first saves Rachel’s in her house. Now that is some pretty cool stuff. There is plenty of action in the film to please anyone and plenty of government stuff. The thing I have always liked about these films is the locations they stop in like Manila, Philippines, Thailand, and Alaska. It’s always fun to see where they will end up next. I am excited for the next film in the series so stay tuned for that. I am going to give The Bourne Legacy four fists out of four for a final grade.
