Monster Entertainment Awards 7So, it has taken us a little while to get this out and we apologize for the wait. Some things have changed and we have decided that we are not going to run the Pedal To The Metal Tournament this year for lack of participation and scheduling conflicts. That is also why we have extended the voting process for this because we have been so far behind that we are starting to catch up now. You now have until April 1st to cast your vote for your favorite wrestlers, albums, and movies. We have a lot of great categories and some categories have already seen the voting process begin on Twitter. Nevertheless, we hope that you guys take the time to vote and to enjoy it because it is up to you to decide who wins and you can vote once an hour on every category. So, have some fun and spread the word.

Monster Entertainment Awards 7I want to take the time to apologize to everyone for the wait, but we have been hard at work at some things for you guys which includes our March Madness style tournament. It’s hard to believe that we have been doing this awards thing known as The Monster Entertainment Awards for seven years now as 2018 marks the seventh annual presentation. A couple of things have changed however and you’ll notice that below, but each category will be handled by a different blog as we are working with the 365 Movies in 365 Days Challenge blog and Mr. X’s Punch Out blog. We here at Moshpits and movies will be handling the music side of things while 365 handles the films and Mr. X handles the wrestling side. As always, you are going to have a certain amount of time to vote for what album you loved more, what movie you thought was film of the year, and what wrestler you thought kicked ass. When all the votes are tallied up, we will present to you all of the winners that YOU chose because it’s all about the people. This award post has always been about you getting involved and deciding who is the best of the year and that is the way we intend to keep it. You will have until March 13Th at 10PM Eastern time to decide what is best so get involved and voice your opinion.

635297If you knew the process I have been going through to find unsigned metal and rock bands from all over the country, most would probably quit, but I am determined. We have visited a lot of states already, but now we are about to go back to southwest United States as we park the tour bus in Albuquerque, New Mexico to check out a Blackened Death Metal act that took me some time to find. The band I am talking about goes by the name of Deforme who in 2016 released their first full length album in God-Like Strength. The track That I am showcasing for you guys off the album is the seventh track Dianetics which right when it kicks in you will notice the brilliance of the duel guitar attack as well as the amazing bass playing from Blair Robey. Juan Martinez’s vocals are as intense as the lyrics and the music itself as he helps drive the song forward. These guys need to be snatched up and signed as they have proven themselves playing with such heavies as Overkill, Nile, Soulfly, and so many more. Check them out on Facebook, give them a like, and check out their music. Check out the track Dianetics below:

When I was a DJ at Bridgewater State University’s WBIM 91.5 FM, I had a lot of fun hosting Pedal To The Metal every Thursday or Friday night depending on how the cards landed. I played every imaginable 80’s metal track you can think of on my two year run there and I had a lot of fun doing it. 20 years ago, WBIM FM started hosting the Alumni Takeover where for one weekend, the DJ’s from the past years were able to come and relive old glory days even if it was just for one day. Three years ago, when I learned that I could be apart of it, I jumped at the chance to reconnect with some familiar faces and meet new faces that had sat in the very chair just as I had done when I attended school there. Sometimes, you don’t know how much you’ve missed it until you’re right behind the microphone like I was this past Friday night for the third ever return of Pedal To The Metal on Alumni Takeover Weekend. I want to take the time to thank John Coombs, he is the main who deals with all of our annoying requests and messages as he tries to strategically place everyone in a time slot. Oh by the way, he does an amazing job doing it as I couldn’t have been more pleased with my time slot. So, a big thank you to him is much deserved! I also want to take the time to thank the current DJ’s at WBIM for giving up their shows and allowing us to relive a little past glories. It is much appreciated!

As far as the playlist was concerned for the show, I had three different playlists that I was going with for the show. The 1st one primarily featured almost the same exact lineup as the one that was actually played. The second playlist featured bands from every era of metal whether it be the 70’s, 80’s, 90’s, and beyond. The third and final playlist that I created was similar to the first one, but the song selection was different. I wanted to pick nine solid songs for the show with one present that I would present to people with a just in case I still had more time track. Last year, I presented everyone with a Black Sabbath medley that featured I believe three different Sabbath singers doing the same track. This year, I decided to do another medley, but this time it would be Ozzy solo and it would feature five different guitarists doing the same track. It was quite the difficult task, but I got the job done and you will see below what the result was. I made one minor adjustment to the playlist twenty minutes to my show because a good friend of my mine in Doc Rock found a vinyl that I just couldn’t resist playing and I opened the show with it. One minor note, I had originally scrapped a Motley Crue track, but I reintroduced it when the Kiss track I chose suddenly stopped due to technical difficulties. So without further ado, check out the playlist below and once again thanks to everyone that tuned in and a big thank you to the WBIM Alumni Association for having me yet again.

metallica-vs-overkillThere is a significance with today’s date and the newest edition of Cover Battle and I’ll explain it to you because it’s a special one. A couple of weeks ago, we had Van Halen take on Mott The Hoople as to who did You Really Got Me by The Kinks better. Well, you all voted and chose Van Halen as the better version. So back to today’s cover battle which is very special because on December 11, 2015 Motorhead would play their last ever show with Lemmy Kilmister who would sadly pass away on December 28, 2015. The last song that they ever played together was the classic 1979 track Overkill and we have chosen it as today’s cover battle track. This one maybe one of the best battles yet because it features a couple of juggernauts of metal as Metallica does battle with Overkill in who did the track Overkill better. It’s east vs west as Bay Area thrash legends Metallica take on New York thrash legends Overkill.

Metallica– The Bay Area Thrash legends back in 1998 released an all covers double album called Garage Inc.. The album contained B-side covers, covers, and even an old EP that had gone out of print since it’s release. The album also included a b-sides disc that was released with the Hero Of The Day single called Motörheadache which saw the band covering Motorhead songs including Overkill. The band stays pretty faithful to the original track with Jason Newsted playing some amazing bass with James Hetfield rocking the song on vocals. Check out Metallica’s version below:

Overkill– The New York thrash legends released an all covers album entitled Coverkill which featured them covering the likes of Jethro Tull, Kiss, Black Sabbath, and Motorhead’s Overkill. It seemed like a very natural move for the band considering the name of the band is the track itself. The version the band included on the album was a live rendition of the track Overkill and the band opens up with the same fury as Metallica, but the only difference is Bobby Ellsworth signature high pitched growl. I truly love D. D. Verni’s bass playing on the song as well as the drumming because they bring the fury of the song right into your face. Check out their version below:

Now it is time for all of you to vote for who you believe did the song better. Was it Metallica or was it Overkill? You have until the next post to decide.

Pasted-image-at-2016_05_12-04_56-PMThere was some very big news that was announced yesterday (May 12) and I have it here for you guys. Since it was kind of hinted that there would be no more Mayhem Fest after last years debacle, the summers were kind of left with nothing leaving metal fan asking the question of what was going to take over? Earlier in the week, it was announced that Corey Taylor (Slipknot/Stone Sour) and Ozzy Osbourne had an announcement to make. I immediately thought that it was either going to be about Ozzfest or Knotfest, I never thought that it would actually be about both. Apparently, they are calling it Ozzfest Meets Knotfest and it’s happening on a weekend in September in San Bernardino, CA. Ozzfest happens on September 24 while Knotfest happens on September 25 at the  San Manuel Amphitheater with some real heavy hitters. Ozzfest features bands like Black Sabbath, Megadeth, Black Label Society, Disturbed, Hatebreed, Goatwhore, and many more. Knotfest features heavyweights like Slipknot and Slayer co-headlining while it also features Amon Amarth, Anthrax, Overkill, Sabaton, Death Angel, and many more. Tickets go on sale May 20TH and for more information on the fest, please go here. I’m going to insert a little bit of my opinion here and say that while it’s cool that this is happening, it doesn’t help anyone that doesn’t live in California. If a metal fan can’t afford to fly out to California to see this then he is left with nothing for the summer. I’m just saying that I hope either one of these becomes a travelling festival next year. Here are the full lineups below:

Ozzfest: Sept. 24

Black Sabbath
Disturbed
Megadeth
Opeth
Black Label Society
Rival Sons
Children of Bodom
Hatebreed
Devildriver
Huntress
Goatwhore
Dead Cross
Municipal Waste
Kataklysm
Nails
The Shrine
Still Rebel

Knotfest: Sept. 25

Slipknot
Slayer
Amon Amarth
Anthrax
Trivium
Sabaton
Suicide Silence
Overkill
Emmure
Butcher Babies
Man With a Mission
Whitechapel
Combichrist
Death Angel
Sim
Oni

MisfitsAdmatRevThe next piece of news that I have is something you should be really excited for especially if you are either a fan of horror punk or Glenn Danzig in general. For the first time since 1983, the original lineup of The Misfits is going to reunite for a couple of gigs. That is right, Glenn Danzig, Jerry Only, and Doyle Wolfgang Von Frankenstein on the same stage at Riot Fest Denver and Chicago. We all know that Doyle has on occasion go on stage with Glenn and so the real issue was between Jerry Only and Glenn. Jerry Only once said this in an interview, “What I feel is that, I’d rather be where I am and be happy and be a positive influence than to be the richest man in the world and miserable and be a scumbag to the kids that follow us. I’m not doing that. I told Doyle that. I told him, ‘Hey look, if Glenn wants to come be a team player and leave that s–t at home, we’re good.’ That’s the name of the game.” I would have loved to be in the room when those two met, but they obviously have broke some ground considering the band is back for a couple of gigs. Tickets for Riot Fest are available as we speak and you can get them by going here.

13151558_10154142704378866_6527274700022246028_nI have to be honest and say that I was going to lose my lid if the rumors about Scott Stapp, the former Creed singer, joining Stone Temple Pilots. That in my opinion was going to be the worst possible news ever, but it turns out the rumors were wrong about him joining STP, but he is joining a band that had ties with Scott Weiland. Scott Stapp announced via a statement that he was joining Art Of Anarchy which Scott was in for a very short time. Here is his statement:

I wanted to clarify any confusions on Stone Temple Pilots and my comment. First off, Scott Weiland in STP is irreplaceable. I was recently asked what I’m currently working on in an interview and could not reveal details or announce this new project. This led the interviewer to assume it was STP and he eagerly kept asking for more details. Evidently my response caused confusion.
I’m excited to share I’ve been working with Art Of Anarchy band who’s members are Ron “Bumble Foot” Thal, formerly of Guns N Roses, John Moyer of Disturbed and Jon and Vince Votta. Original announcement was slated for July along with our first single and album to follow but happy to share this announcement sooner to clarify.
Art Of Anarchy is the project that I was referring to in the interview not STP. Scott Weiland was a part of Art of Anarchy and that’s the six degrees of separation I was referring to. Always been a fan of STP and I wish them all the best in their search for a new singer.
Allow me to introduce Art Of Anarchy. Stay tuned.

Scott Weiland recorded vocals for the only release that Art Of Anarchy has to date, but when it came time to tour, he proclaimed that he was not the singer for the band and that he wouldn’t record with them. So, having no lead singer was the perfect opportunity for Stapp to join the band considering all the members of Creed are busy with other projects.

Liv-SinSince we are on the topic of people announcing new projects or joining bands, I have some news regarding former Sister Sin vocalist Liv Jagrell. Swedish rock outfit Sister Sin announced that they were no longer going to be a band toward the end of last year which left Liv Jagrell with nothing to do. Well have no fear because she has just announced that she is going to continue her career under the name Liv Sin. For me it has never been an option to stop singing. I live for the stage and for my fans. I still miss Sister Sin, but I am very excited to work on my own project, and I can promise it will not be some soft pop rock. This is going to be metal deluxe, because that’s who I am!” which is what Jagrell said in an interview. In a statement on Facebook, she said, “So guys, here is some news for you, I’m not leaving you. I have a management who believes in me, musicians that I’m making songs with and now I just have to find a label to support me. Stay tuned and have patience! (That goes for me too haha).” Stay tuned here for more info as it becomes available.

1The end of 2015 into where we are now in 2016 has been a very rough year for the music and entertainment world as we mourn the loss of so many greats. One of those greats that we lost was the great Lemmy Kilmister of Motorhead. That was one of the toughest losses we suffered so far (besides Bowie), but we have something coming out to help us remember him. On June 10TH, UDR is releasing a Live CD/DVD entitled Clean Your Clock which is a live performance recorded back in November during the band’s performance in Munich. The album features classics like Orgasmatron, Overkill, Ace Of Spades, and Bomber which you can actually check out here. According to Loudwire.com, here are some of the different formats it’s available in, “The disc will be available in numerous configurations including a standalone CD, DVD with CD, Blu-ray with CD and colored double vinyl in gatefold with pop-up art. In addition, there will be a box set containing the aforementioned vinyl, DVD, audio CD and Motorhead metal medal along with a limited edition box set with the option of a silver or gold medal and digital download.”

downloadFans of classic rock groups like The Rolling Stones, Paul McCartney, Bob Dylan, Roger Waters, and The Who have something to drool over as The Desert Trip was officially announced. Now you may be asking what in the hell is The Desert Trip and what do these acts have to do with that. Well, The Desert Trip is a three day festival that is taking place at the same place as Coachella (Empire Polo Club in Indio, CA) and each of the three nights only features two performers. The Rolling Stones and Bob Dylan headline Friday while Paul McCartney and Neil Young are Saturday while Roger Waters and The Who close out the festival on Sunday. To see all information regarding ticket prices, hotels, and such, please visit the festival website here. This just might be a once in a lifetime kind of show and knowing the way 2016 has been going, I might just have to spend the dough.
