pedal cup 2020Two years ago instead of doing the pedal to the metal tournament which was emulating the NCAA basketball tournament, I decided to change it and call it the Pedal Cup. For the first year, we did the world cup edition of the competition and that was won by Japan and Babymetal. That year, we tried our best to get as many bands from different countries as we could and while it sometimes can prove difficult to do, we also plan to do the same for the European edition of the Pedal Cup for this year which will coincide with the UEFA Euro 2020 tournament. Returning to this year’s tournament are the third and fourth place finishers from the World Cup edition in Portugal and Poland and they will be joined by Germany, France, Italy, Sweden, Spain, England, Ukraine, Holland, Austria, Denmark, and so many more celebrating the best in Death Metal, Black Metal, Heavy Metal, and more. So stay tuned here for more info as the bands will be chosen and all of the countries competing will be revealed.

pedal to the metal 6 posterI have been doing the Alumni Takeover Weekend at Bridgewater State University’s WBIM 91.5 FM for the last five years and every year I generally played the same material as I did when I was a full time DJ at the station back in 2012 with Pedal To The Metal Radio. This year I wanted to do something a little different than usual and it was I wanted to showcase my love for music that is a little more extreme than what rock radio stations are playing. So that is exactly what I decided to do with my sixth appearance at the station when I hit the airwaves last night at 9PM to close out night one of two after following the longest running radio show in non commercial college radio history in The Basement. Right now, I want to thank the Alumni Association for putting together the Alumni Takeover event because the man behind the scenes in Peter Q does an absolute terrific job putting this together. Without him and the help of other alums, this wouldn’t be possible. I also want to thank all of the current DJ’s who were so courteous to give up their shifts for one weekend so that all of us could relive our glory days for one night. I also want to thank fellow Metalhead Matt Rau who usually has his radio show on Fridays from 7PM ET to 10PM ET for giving up his spot so that I could do my show. I appreciate it a lot and thank you. It was a fun show to do even though I had a little bit of a hiccup with the wrong song playing at the wrong time a couple of times, but other than that I thought it went pretty well. Also I want to add that below you will see Radio Premiere next to a track by the band Sodom and that is because I think I’m the only DJ in America to play that on the radio. It definitely got the blood going and the idea of wanting to get back into the game, but that is a discussion for another day. I definitely look forward to this every year and I ope that it continues happening for another 100 years and beyond. Check out the playlist and some of the artwork below:

When I was a DJ at Bridgewater State University’s WBIM 91.5 FM, I had a lot of fun hosting Pedal To The Metal every Thursday or Friday night depending on how the cards landed. I played every imaginable 80’s metal track you can think of on my two year run there and I had a lot of fun doing it. 21 years ago, WBIM FM started hosting the Alumni Takeover where for one weekend, the DJ’s from the past years were able to come and relive old glory days even if it was just for one day. Four years ago, when I learned that I could be apart of it, I jumped at the chance to reconnect with some familiar faces and meet new faces that had sat in the very chair just as I had done when I attended school there. Sometimes, you don’t know how much you’ve missed it until you’re right behind the microphone like I was this past Friday night for the fourth ever return of Pedal To The Metal on Alumni Takeover Weekend. Once again, I want to take the time to thank John Coombs, he is the man who deals with all of our annoying requests and messages as he tries to strategically place everyone in a time slot. Oh by the way, he does an amazing job doing it as I couldn’t have been more pleased with my time slot. So, a big thank you to him is much deserved! I also want to take the time to thank the current DJ’s at WBIM for giving up their shows and allowing us to relive a little past glories. It is much appreciated! One of the cool things about this year’s takeover is that this was the first Alumni Takeover to be held at the new satellite studio for WBIM which was pretty exciting. On the Saturday edition of the Takeover, they were holding a ribbon cutting of the new studio with University President Frederick Clark.

bD05B_B_As far as the idea for this years playlist was concerned, I wanted to do something a little different than I had in the past. The first three years, I just took whatever songs I was in the mood for and I played the tracks on my show. This year, I wanted to start a theme and every year I can do a different theme than the last. So, I decided that this year, I would do all live tracks and I did it in the idea of what if I held a festival called Pedal To The Metal Fest and all these bands showed up to play, this would be the best performances of the day. I will admit that I had a hard time finding live tracks from some of the bands, but the harder part was having to edit all the F-bombs out of the songs. I originally started with having Sepultura, Amon Amarth, Ghost, Rob Zombie, W.A.S.P., etc. But when I arrived at the studio, I changed my mind on what the opener would be so I took out Sepultura and replaced them with Ministry. I had to add Van Halen at the end because I was running out of tracks with plenty of time left and I ended the show with what I called a non-live bonus track from Monster Magnet. Once again though, the best part of the whole event was getting to connect with some amazing people that you don’t always get to see all the time. I had a lot of fun at my fourth ever Alumni Takeover Weekend at Bridgewater State University and I definitely look forward to some more in the future. Check out the playlist below:

duckman posterIf you are reading the headline, then you know that it’s absolutely true that my old radio show from my days at Bridgewater State University is coming back for one night only. That is not a mistake because every year, the college holds it’s annual Alumni Takeover during the school’s Homecoming weekend which allows some old alums to come back and host a show for an hour or so. For the last three years, I have had some fun wracking my brain to come up with a playlist that I thought you would enjoy as well, but this year it’s going to change. I think every year, I am going to pick a theme and I am just going to run with it. This year, I have something special planned out for you guys, but you’ll have to wait and just wonder exactly what Pedal To The Metal Fest is all about. I do not have the exact day and time I am going to be on, but you should know that Alumni Takeover weekend is October 12TH and 13TH. Stay tuned here because as soon as I find out what time I’ll be on, I will let you guys know here and on the Facebook page.

Pedal Cup Bracket 2 FINALS CHAMPIONThe dust has finally cleared and we have a clear cut winner by a mile and there is nothing controversial about the win. BABYMETAL won the match fair and square with the power of their fan base. I’ve seen this happen over the years during the Pedal To The Metal Tournaments when the fan bases of Kreator, Destruction, and Queensryche all led them to be winners. I post a link of the tournament to every single band’s page giving everyone a equal shot at winning and they did just that beating Behemoth 334 to 80. I gave everyone three options on how to vote and the fan base killed it and showed up in style for sure. It was definitely one heck of a win for the Japanese Kawaii Metal band, but that wasn’t the only match you could vote on. We also had the third place match that saw the final four runner ups Moonspell take on Morbid Angel. Moonspell jumped out to an early lead and believe me they never looked back earning them a third place finish. It’s sad that this is over for now and it won’t be until 2022 until we do another one, but we have the Euros coming up in two years so we’ll see you there. Once again, Congratulations to BABYMETAL!

pedalcup trophyThat is right metal heads, the finals of the first ever Pedal Cup (the World Cup of Metal) is here and this is the moment you have been voting for. You the fans, took two bands in Behemoth (Poland) and BABYMETAL (Japan) and you voted them all the way to the finals and it was quite the run for both bands. Unfortunately, only one of them will walk away from the tournament as the first ever Pedal Cup champion. We also have the third place match which is traditionally played in the FIFA World Cup and we are going to keep that tradition as Portugals’ Moonspell take son US Death Metal legends Morbid Angel for the right to Bronze. Today, we are also revealing the Pedal Cup trophy which we dedicated and designed some specifics of it to honor the legacy of one of music and Metal’s greatest inspirations in the late Motorhead Frontman/bassist Lemmy Kilmister. There is a Spade from the Ace Of Spades on the top of the trophy along with a coin of Lemmy on the bottom and the Pedal To The Metal logo beneath that. As always, there are three ways to vote with one being on the Facebook page, the other on Twitter, and the last way to vote right here on this blog. You have 24 Hours to decide who is the first ever Pedal Cup Champion and the third place band. Good luck!!!!

Pedal Cup Bracket 2 FINALS

17498847_1430758220309198_7445967711751034253_nWhat a semifinals that we just had and while it didn’t set records as compared to some numbers from the Pedal To The Metal March Madness Tournament, it definitely set Pedal Cup records considering this is the first tournament. The most talked about match was the one between Japan’s BABYMETAL who had been blazing a path through the tournament taking on surprise semifinalist Moonspell of Portugal. Moonspell for the most part had been leading the match for maybe half of it until BABYMETAL’s fans showed up when it counted and took the match decisively. The other semifinal match featured two titans of their respective sub-genre’s of Metal in Poland’s Behemoth and Florida’s own Morbid Angel. Behemoth took the early decisive lead and just never looked back on their way to victory. Now, Behemoth has a tough task on hand as they challenge BABYMETAL for the first ever Pedal Cup crown, but with fan voting it’s anyone’s ball game. Also in the third place match, Moonspell will take on Morbid Angel because that is traditionally what the World Cup does. Check out he box scores below:
