For today’s Ass Whoopin Wednesday film, I chose a film that I wanted to check out for a while when I heard that WWE wrestler Dean Ambrose was the latest to get into films. Dean is the latest to star in 12 Rounds 3: Lockdown which he plays a troubled Detective named Shaw. Dean is returning to the job for the first time in months after the death of his partner. While on the job, he discovers some corruption in the precinct involving a former partner and he decides to investigate it. Detective Burke (Roger R. Cross), the corrupt cop gets wind of what Shaw is doing and to protect his own behind, he puts the whole building into lockdown and he hunts Shaw. Shaw only has 12 rounds in his gun to help defend himself while he tries to figure out a way to get the evidence out. The film also stars Daniel Cudmore (X-Men: The Last Stand) as Gideon, Lochlyn Munro (Scary Movie) as Darrow, Ty Olsson (X-Men 2) as Harris, Sarah Smyth (50/50) as Officer Taylor, Rebecca Marshall (That’s My Boy) as Captain Matthews, Kirby Morrow (RoboCop) as Saul, Toby Levins (Godzilla) as Meeks, Sharon Taylor (Stargate: Atlantis) as Carmen, Hugo Steele (Man Of Steel) as Hurst, and the film was directed by Stephen Reynolds (Vendetta). Before we get into the review, let’s check out some stats:
Now as far as the stats are concerned, Dean’s character has 11 kills/knockouts in the film. He kind of has an origin story, but the only thing you find out is that his partner was killed in duty and that Burke was also Shaw’s former partner. There is no love interest and an officer that he had just met that day was shot and killed, but I didn’t count that. The big boss is defeated and you’ll just have to wait and see for yourselves as far as how it was done. I was excited to see Dean Ambrose starring in an action movie, but the film changed in many ways. The original concept of the films were great because it made it a game. In this film, the 12 rounds refer to the amount of bullets in his gun that he’ll have to get the job done. The fight scenes in the film are a little messy and they’re just OK in my opinion. That is not me saying that Dean didn’t do well because I thought he was great in the film and a little bit better than most in the film. The camera work is pretty good, but there’s times when some of the shots get a little annoying. One of the funniest scenes in the film was right when you first see Dean as he is waiting at a stop light and some snot nosed kid in a Porsche pulls up wanting to race. What happens next is awesome as Dean keeps his cool the whole time. This is an action film so you know exactly what you are getting with it. It’s not the best in the series, but it’s decent. I am giving he film 3 fists out of five for a final grade.
