2013 MTV Video Music Awards
Posted: August 25, 2013 in AwardsTags: 2013 MTV Video Music Awards, 30 Seconds To Mars, Austin Mahone, Awards, Brooklyn, Bruno Mars, Can't Hold Us, Capital Cities, Come & Get It, I Knew You Were Trouble, Janelle Monáe, Jay Z, Justin Timberlake, Katy Perry, Macklemore, Miley Cyrus, MTV, Music Video, Nate Reuss, New York, No Sleep Till Brooklyn, One Direction, Pink, Ray Dalton, Roar, Ryan Lewis, Same Love, Selena Gomez, Taylor Swift, The Beastie Boys, VMA
Who knew that MTV could still have a music video award show after all these years.Whatever happened to having someone funny actually host the award show like they used to with Chris Rock? Anyways, it was considered a big deal for MTV considering the award show was coming back to New York, well it came to Brooklyn. Hence, every time a commercial came on for it, you heard The Beastie Boys hit No Sleep Till Brooklyn. In typical fashion, the biggest name in music opens the award show with a spectacular performance and that is exactly what Lady Gaga did hen she performed her brand new song Applause. With all the wardrobe changes during the actual performance, her last outfit impressed me. With a sea shell themed bikini, Lady Gaga revealed that she had an amazing body within all the crazy outfits.
Miley Cyrus was the next performer in what was an oversexed performance in my opinion. It blatantly trashy and not very original in my opinion. She came out of a giant teddy bear only to reveal her one piece bikini that was a teddy bear. Her dance moves in my opinion was an insult to Hip Hop. It wasn’t until Robin Thicke came on stage that it got a little better, but all the grinding that Miley did was just a little too much. Later on Iggy Asalea and Lil Kim came out and Lil Kim looked pretty good as they presented the award for Best Hip Hop Video. Kevin Hart was hilarious as he came out to make sure people knew he wasn’t a host. Even he noticed that Lady Gaga looked good and even commented on Miley Cyrus, “Miley better get a pregnancy test after all that grindin.”
Kayne West was the next performance of the night which started off being intimate, but after the intro you could only see his shadow until he revealed himself on stage at the end. Nothing would matter because Justin Timberlake had the performance of the decade. Justin started his 13 plus minute performance with a pre-recorded video of him singing throughout the Barclays Center until he was revealed on stage playing every hit that he had. If you thought that was amazing, he would re-unite with Nsync onstage for a mini performance of Bye Bye Bye. After his performance was finally done, he was presented with the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard award which he rightfully deserved. The rest of the night saw performances from Drake, Bruno Mars, Macklemore & Ryan Lewis with Katy Perry closing out the show with her performance of Roar at the Brooklyn Bridge.

Everyone always watches any of the MTV award shows for the opening sequences because those are the make or break sequences that will tell you how the night will be. So, Rebel Wilson was named the host of the 2013 MTV Movie Awards and I had high hopes because she actually is funny. The opening sequence which featured James Franco travelling to Australia to tell Rebel that she was chosen started the night off on the right foot. She was presented with the Iron Mangina suit and she flew to the awards where she performed with her Pitch Perfect cast in an amazing performance. Right when Rebel picked up the mic to talk to everyone, it suddenly became awkward where people were not laughing at her jokes right away and it was painful. Melissa McCarthy was the first presenter and her jokes were awful and that was an extremely awkward moment as well.
As the show went on, the presenters were better as Rebel was still trying to figure out what she had to do to get a laugh. She eventually started to roll with her best bit which was the parodies of Les Miserable, Life Of Pi, and Magic Mike. Will Ferrell’s acceptance speech was priceless as he deservedly won the Comedic Genius award. The very beautiful Aubrey Plaza had her moment with Will Ferrell when she tried to take his award and she randomly sat back down. Rebel was a victim of another awkward moment when she won the Breakthrough performer award and the timing with Zac Efron, Seth Rogen, and Danny McBride just went terribly wrong. Selena Gomez had one of the best performances of the night in her sexy Indian outfit. The best announcement came at the end of the night when the director of The Avengers announced that Avengers 2 will come out in 2015 Overall, I am going to give the night a C+ because of all the awkward silent, missed joke moments of the night and there were many.
