iron-man-3For this week’s Super Sunday film, we are heading back into the Marvel Cinematic Universe because Avengers: Age Of Ultron is less than a week away. So, we decided to review the last film that was made in the Iron Man realm as we tackle Iron Man 3. In the timeline of events, the world now knows who Iron Man really is thanks to the attack on New York City by Loki and the alien forces. The only problem is that Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) hasn’t been handling what happened very well as he is now the victim of anxiety attacks. Though, something else is about to happen that rocks Stark’s world. A new and formidable opponent known only to the world as the Mandarin (Ben Kingsley) is causing enough damage that it sets Stark on a quest of rebuilding and retribution. The film also stars Gwyneth Paltrow (Iron Man) as Pepper, Jon Favreau (Swingers) as Happy, Guy Pearce (L.A. Confidential) as Aldrich Killian, Rebecca Hall (The Town) as Maya, James Badge Dale (World War Z) as Savin, Paul Bettany (Priest) as Jarvis, William Sadler (Hard To Kill) as President Ellis, Don Cheadle (Hotel Rwanda) as Iron Patriot, Ty Simpkins (Insidious) as Harley Keener, Miguel Ferrer (Robocop) as Vice President Rodriguez, and the film was directed by Shane Black (Kiss Kiss Bang Bang). The film also features cameos from various news anchors and political analysts like Bill Maher, Josh Elliot, Joan Rivers, Thomas Roberts, George Kotsiopoulos, and more.

iron-man-3-couchIs this my favorite film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe? Well, I can’t answer that because every time they come out with a film, a better and more bad ass one comes out not too long afterwards. Marvel and Disney have been hitting home runs with all of their films whether it be Iron Man, Avengers, or even the Guardians Of The Galaxy. They are dominating the box office for a reason and what more can you say about the film other than the fact that Robert Downey Jr. is Iron Man. Do you want action well than this film has it. Do you want melodrama well then this film and any of the others are great sources of it. Do you like Robert Downey Jr.’s Charisma then you’ll enjoy every last drop of it in this film as it oozes out of him. I have to say that I also enjoyed seeing Guy Pearce as the villain and the origin story that builds it up is great as well. I cannot wait to see what the future holds when the new Avengers film comes out this Thursday (April 30) because I know it’s going to be epic. I was kind of hoping for an Iron Man 4, but I’ll take whatever we can get out of Robert in any of the films. Robert deserved the award he received at the MTV Movie Awards because he has had the most epic comeback of a career that cultivated with these Marvel films. That is why I am going to give this film an A for a final grade.

jay and bobIt’s been a little while since we last did a Super Sunday film and we apologize for that. We’ve been a little busy, but we have returned with something good for all of you to enjoy and laugh at. Kevin Smith and Jason Mewes (Clerks) made quite the career playing the dynamic weed smoking duo Jay and Silent Bob in live action films. Well, now the duo has returned in cartoon form in Jay And Silent Bob’s Super Groovy Cartoon Movie. Things are changing in Red Banks, New Jersey for the duo as the city is getting set to open up dispensaries, so the duo is trying to figure out exactly what it is there going to do when the future arrives. After securing some free cash, Silent Bob buys some scratch tickets and he hits the big jackpot which leads the duo to form the superhero duo Bluntman and Chronic as the duo decides to fight crime for a living. The film also stars Eliza Dushku (Dollhouse) as Lipstick Lesbian, Kevin Conroy (Batman: Mask Of The Phantasm) as The Mayor Of Red Bank, Neil Gaiman (Beowolf) as Albert the Butler, Ralph Garman (Ted) as Dickhead, Ben Gleib (The Book Of Life) as Newsgroup, Paul Hipp (Face/Off) as Ring Wearing Alien, Tara Strong (The Fairy Oddparents) as Cocknocker, Jennifer Schwalbach Smith (Zack And Miri Make A Porno) as Bluntgirl, Brian O’Halloran (Clerks) as Dante Hicks, and the film was directed by Steve Stark (Smodimations 2-D ).

jay and bob 2This film is definitely very interesting and it’s sort of a parody film because they constantly reference various other superheroes through the film. They parody everyone from The Green Lantern, Captain America, Mr. Freeze, Dr. Octopus, Bane, and one of the scenes from Batman 1989. We all know that Kevin Smith is a comic book nerd so it’s only logical that after teasing us with Bluntman and Chronic for years that he finally made a film. This film is definitely not suitable for children as it has a lot of gay references and you can obviously see that with some of the names of the characters in the film and the language isn’t suitable either. What is funny is the origin stories of all the villains in the League Of Shitters is almost all identical in the way the story ends except for its leader. If you love everything ever done that involves Jason Mewes and Kevin Smith together as Jay and Silent Bob then you are definitely going to enjoy this film like I have. I know Bluntman and Chronic don’t exactly fit into the DC or Marvel Universe, but I figured that Kevin Smith was such a fan that it was worthy enough to be included as a Super Sunday review. The film is only 65 minutes in length which is nice and it’s available to watch on Netflix right now. I am going to give the film an B+ for a final grade.

superI wanted to once again choose something that was completely outside of the DC or Marvel Universe for today’s Super Sunday film. The film I chose for today however has a connection with a Marvel smash hit because the writer and director of today’s film Super is James Gunn. Gunn is the man that wrote and directed last summer’s smash hit Guardians Of The Galaxy, but before that he had this film. Super stars Rainn Wilson (House Of 1000 Corpses) as Frank, a guy who has never been that lucky in his life until he married Sarah (Liv Tyler). One day, Frank is so oblivious to what is really going on that Sarah leaves him for Jacques (Kevin Bacon), a strip club owner and overall jerk off. One day, Frank is given a vision by The Holy Avenger (Nathan Fillion) and Frank decides to become a super hero named The Crimson Bolt. Alongside, Boltie (Ellen Page), they’ll do their best to clean up the crime in the city and hopefully win Sarah back. The film also stars Michael Rooker (The Walking Dead) as Abe, Gregg Henry (Guardians Of The Galaxy) as Detective Felkner, Andre Royo (The Wire) as Hamilton, William Katt (The Greatest American Hero) as Sgt. Fitzgibbon, Linda Cardellini (Grandma’s Boy) as Maria, and Rob Zombie as God.

super 2One thing that you are definitely going to say is that the film has a similar tone to Kick Ass in where a regular person decides to dress up as a superhero in order to fight crime. You have every right to believe that, but just for your information, Gunn actually wrote this film back in 2002 and he had trouble shopping the film around because they felt that it was too violent. Kick Ass had Hit Girl and The Crimson Bolt has Boltie and that is where the similarities end between the two films. One thing that you will also notice is that Gunn makes excellent decisions as to what music to use for a soundtrack because this film’s soundtrack is actualluy very good as compared to the excellent one used in Guardians Of The Galaxy, but what I am saying is that you can see’s Gunn’s evolution unveiling right before your eyes. You’ll also notice that Lloyd Kaufman once again makes another cameo appearance and why shouldn’t he, James Gunn starred in Tromeo & Juliet. I really liked the film and thought it was a cool and different take on the genre. I am going to give Super a B+ for a final grade.

avengersTo help celebrate the fact that both The Avengers 2: Age Of Ultron and Ant Man films are coming out in 2015, I decided to review The Ultimate Avengers: The Movie for today’s Super Sunday film. The film starts right from the beginning of the formation of The Avengers and the film starts with Captain America (Justin Gross) who is getting ready to penetrate a Nazi headquarters in Norway in 1945. The only problem for the cap is that once he is inside the facility, he discovers that Aliens are running the Nazi headquarters and they are about to launch a nuclear missile. The cap saves the day, but is in the bottom of the ocean where he’ll spend the next 51 years. Nick Fury (Andre Ware) in the future time digs out Captain America in hopes that he can find the secret to the super serum that he was administered years before with Dr. Bruce Banner (Michael Massee) helping. In the meantime, Nick Fury discovers that the same aliens the cap encountered are trying to throw a wrench into his plans by attacking S.H.I.E.L.D. and so he has to assemble a team of superheroes in order to battle the aliens. The film stars Grey DeLisle (Uncle Grandpa) as Janet Pym/Wasp, Olivia d’Abo (Conan The Destroyer) as Black Widow, Marc Worden (Planet Hulk) as Iron Man/Tony Stark, Nan McNamara (Gears Of War) as Dr. Betty Ross, Nolan North (Star Trek Into Darkness) as Ant Man/Hank Pym/Giant Man, David Boat (Wreck It Ralph) as Thor, and the film was directed by Curt Geda (Batman Beyond: Return Of The Joker), Steven E. Gordon (Shrek 2), and Bob Richardson (Spider-Man 1994).

avengers 2For those that do not remember, Ant Man is actually one of the original members of The Avengers and so that made me more interested in wanting to watch this film because of the fact that he was in it. In this film though, he’s known as Giant Man because he gave himself the ability to grow larger in size rather than just small in size. They gave Black Widow an actual Russian accent than what Scarlett Johansson gives the character. One of the big issues the team deals with is the fact that The Hulk is a little unhinged when he’s on a rampage and that proves to be a problem later in the film. The film has plenty of action for an animated film, but I didn’t really like Bruce Banners voice because for a while I thought it was Johnny Knoxville playing him. There is definitely a plethora of films that are available to watch as long as you are fan of animated films. There are so many different stories that they can choose from and use for an animated film rather than the battle Marvel and DC are entrenched in the live action realm. Check this one out if you’re a fan of The Avengers. I am giving it an A- for a final grade.

Jla_doom_2012A lot of DC Comics fans are going to be so happy when all of DC’s plans are fulfilled and you see the first Justice League film come out in the theaters. But for now, we have all of the animated films to watch to see what kind of scenarios they could come up with for the film. For today’s Super Sunday film, I watched the 2012 animated film Justice League: Doom. In the film, Batman (Kevin Conroy) has some special files which are contingency plans to contain all of the members of the Justice League just in case they went bad. Well, the self proclaimed God Vandal Savage (Phil Morris) sends Mirror Master into the bat cave to steal all of the information that will tell him about all of their weaknesses. With this information, he sends in a team of super villains to vanquish the Earth of the super heroes so that he can carry out his plans of world domination. The film also stars Tim Daly (Wings) as Superman, Susan Eisenberg (Superman/Batman: Apocalypse) as Wonder Woman, Nathan Fillion (Slither) as The Green Lantern, Carl Lumbly (Men Of Honor) as Martian Manhunter, Michael Rosenbaum (Smallville) as The Flash, Bumper Robinson (Enemy Mine) as Cyborg, Carlos Alazraqui (Happy Feet) as Bane, Claudia Black (Rango) as Cheetah, Olivia d’Abo (Conan The Destroyer) as Star Sapphire, and the film was directed by Lauren Montgomery (Superman/Doomsday).

LegionOfDoomI actually loved the concept of the story for this film because it gives us a different look than what we usually get because all of their identities are compromised. Think about it, Randal Savage learns about all of their weaknesses and then sends Bane and Co. to take care of business so that he can go ahead with his master plan without those pesky superheroes around. We actually see most of superheroes defeated by The Legion Of Doom and like a phoenix they rise from the ashes to hopefully save the day (watch the film to find out). The only thing I didn’t like about the film was the voice they chose for Bane, but then again some people have a problem with Tom Hardy as Bane. I certainly didn’t, but you can please everyone (me included). This one is definitely worth checking out if you’re a fan of DC Comics and any of the animated stuff they have put out over the years. Here’s to the future, but for now I am going to give this film an B+ for a final grade.

man of steel titleFor this week’s Super Sunday, we are heading back into the DC Universe for one of the comics that basically made them who they are today. For a lot of us comic book fans that grew up in the 80’s and 90’s, Christopher Reeve was the man known as Superman in all of our eyes. In 2006, Warner Brothers and DC Comics decided to bring back Superman to the big screen considering things were hot for Marvel at the time with Spider-Man and X-men. The only problem is their 2006 film Superman Returns was a huge flop and disappointment in the eyes of many fans. It would take seven years and for Christopher Nolan to dominate with his edgy and dark take on the Batman series with The Dark Knight Trilogy for DC and Warner to finally realize what they had to do with the Superman series and now we have 2013’s Man Of Steel. Henry Cavill (Immortals) stars as Clark Kent, Kal-El, or Superman as the film explores his origins of how he made it to Earth. Although in this film, we learn that General Zod (Michael Shannon) and the fact that Krypton was about to end was the reason for him travelling to Earth. Jor-El (Russell Crowe) and Lara (Ayelet Zurer) had to sacrifice their lives so that Kal could live on a new planet. That doesn’t stop Zod and his outlawed and banished team from trying to find Kal so that they can recover something that is key to their planet. The film stars Diane Lane (Chaplin) as Marta Kent, Kevin Costner (Dances With Wolves) as Jonathan Kent, Amy Adams (American Hustle) as Lois Lane, Laurence Fishburne (The Matrix) as Perry White, Antje Traue (5 Days Of War) as Faora-Ul, Richard Cetrone (Watchmen) as Tor-An, and the film was directed by Zack Snyder (300).

superman Visually, I think this film is out of this world and that expression, “This film is visually stunning” is 100% accurate about Man Of Steel. Where Superman Returns failed, this film made up for it in every category. There is a reason why this film won the superhero movie of the year award last year in the 3RD Annual Monster Entertainment Awards with 50% of the vote and it was because it was that badass. I can’t pinpoint one performance that wasn’t better than any other performance because the cast was superb and Michael Shannon played an excellent villain. The special effects were great and the cinematography was on point. The only thing is that I wasn’t used to the idea of the film having Superman meet Lois Lane before he starts to work at The Daily Planet. This was definitely one of my favorite films from 2013 and unfortunately we have to wait until 2016 to get the second film in the series Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice. which stars Ben Affleck as the new Batman, Jesse Eisenberg as Lex Luthor, and Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman. I am going to give this film an A for a final grade. If you want to get involved in the voting process for the 4TH Annual Monster Entertainment Awards which features everything from Superhero film of the year, Horror, Action, comedy, and music categories as well, then click here.
