doll skinWhen I first came across this rock band from Scottsdale, Arizona, their name is what intrigued me to look because there is something interesting about the name Doll Skin. The all female led band made up of Sydney Dolezal (Lead Vocals/Rhythm Guitar), Alex Snowden (Lead Guitar), Nicole Rich (Bass), and Meghan Herring (Drums) met at a School Of Rock in Scottsdale and have been making a name for themselves ever since. The group has drawn comparisons to the likes of legends like The Runaways, The Go-Go’s, and The Donnas, but they are definitely trying to carve their own name with Hopeless Records by their side as they get ready to release Love Is Dead And We Killed Her on June 28TH of this year and to keep you occupied the group has a music video for their track Mark My Words. The video is mainly a performance based video, but some of the other scenes will excite anyone who was a fan of the film The Craft or even the Netflix series The Chilling Adventures Of Sabrina with it’s witchcraft references. The group talked about the album overall saying, “This album was written about traumatic or extraordinary events that have impacted us as humans and wanted to share those emotions with people who can relate. We want to be vocal for those who may feel like they don’t have a voice. Lots of these songs tackled issues that upset us and we want to put out a message that we feel matters and to have a point behind all of our songs.” You can pre-order the album here, but check out the video below for one of the most exciting groups of 2019.

the-runaways-537e434f4fd5bWe decided to be super generous today considering there is no Ass Whoopin Wednesday posts and not to many albums we love celebrates an anniversary on the day we do these Album Of The Week posts. An anniversary you ask and who is the band? Well on June 1, 1976, The Runaways released their self titled debut record on this day making it 40 years old. The band which was made up of Cherie Currie (Vocals), Joan Jett (Guitar/Vocals), Lita Ford (Guitars), Jackie Fox (Bass, Credit only did not perform on record), Nigel Harrison (Bass), and Sandy West (Drums). Apparently when the album was being created, Kim Fowley (the band’s manager and producer) would not allow Jackie Fox to play on the album which is why Nigel Harrison is credited as the bass player. The album wasn’t too successful however as it only peaked at 174 on The Billboard Top 200 Charts, but it spawned a number one single in Japan and Scandinavia with Cherry Bomb.

The_Runaways-The_Runaways-Trasera1. Cherry Bomb– Apparently the most popular Runaways song is also a song Kim Fowley and Joan Jett quickly wrote on the spot because no one could play the song Cherie Currie picked for her audition. The title is a play on words of Cherie’s name and one of the most bad ass songs ever. 5/5

2. You Drive Me Wild– The next track on the album that was written and sung by Joan Jett. The song has an amazing blues rock guitar riff and a cool guitar solo in a track that talks about sex. 4.5/5

3. Is It Day or Night?– A Currie sung track that talks about the girls having to fight for their lives to survive on the rock scene. 4/5

4. Thunder-An AC/DC like rock track that Cherie Currie once again sings on that mixes a little Kiss flavor in their. 4/5

5. Rock & Roll– The band’s cover of The Velvet Underground classic with Jett on vocals. 4/5

6. Lovers– One of many tracks that Kim Fowley had something to do with writing wise with very sexual lyrics in a cool rock track. 4/5

runaways-with-kim-fowley-19757. American Nights– a cool rock track that just describes teenagers all over the world and what they do at night in a  track sung by Currie. 4/5

8. Blackmail– a not so typical break up song written by women and I say that because instead of sitting there and being depressed, these women get revenge. The song features some awesome vocals from Jett. 4.5/5

9. Secrets– A very interesting track with an interesting message. Currie sings about how they inspire to be something, but they have to hide it because it’s not what they are supposed to do. 4/5

10. Dead End Justice– A cool girl anthem that has a hard driving riff as Currie and Jett share the vocal duties on this song. It’s also the longest track on the album as it clocks in at 7 minutes long. The track features some cheesy dialogue, but it’s cool 4/5

My Final Thoughts– These were some bad ass women who did a lot for women in rock and roll. They proved they could be as dangerous and sexual as the men could be. The only unfortunate thing is that they didn’t stay together for too long, but nevertheless they left quite the impression. That is why I am going to give the album four stars out of five for a final grade.

Sandy Is In The Red Tank Top

The Runaways have become one of the most notorious bands of the 70’s as of late due to all the books, stories, and even a movie that has been released about the band over the last ten years. While they were a powerhouse for the short amount of time they were together in the late 70’s, it seems that they were also a dysfunctional bunch with a manager named Kim Fowley who was just as insane and dysfunctional as anyone else. Jackie Fuchs, who went by the stage name Jackie Fox, is now the latest member of the girl group to come out with some information on their former manager that is both shocking and unnerving at the same time. Jackie spoke with the Huffington Post claiming that Kim Fowley had raped her back in the day as some of her bandmates watched as well. According to Jackie, the band was celebrating at a hotel after they had played a show in New York on New Years Eve when she was approached by a roadie. The roadie apparently offered her some Quaaludes for her to take with no questions asked. The next thing you know, she tells them that she wakes up and she can hear Kim Fowley offering her to anyone else who would like to have sex with her and she was only 16 at the time. Jackie tells them, “You don’t know what terror is until you realize something bad is about to happen to you and you can’t move a muscle. I can’t move. I can’t speak. All I can do is look him in the eye and do the best I can do to communicate: Please say no. … I don’t know what it looked like from the outside. But I know what was going on inside and it was horror.” She also says that she was slipping in an out of consciousness as Fowley raped her and the last thing she remembers seeing was her bandmates Cherie Currie and Joan Jett just staring at her. She does however say in her story that Currie tried to speak up, but left because everyone was afraid of Fowley. She spoke out about this years ago hoping that she could get Fowley to acknowledge what he did, but unfortunately she never did as Fowley passed away last year from Bladder cancer.

Joan Jett has however responded to the accusations in an interview with Yahoo Music saying, “Anyone who truly knows me understands that if I was aware of a friend or bandmate being violated, I would not stand by while it happened. For a group of young teenagers thrust into ’70s rock stardom there were relationships that were bizarre, but I was not aware of this incident. Obviously Jackie’s story is extremely upsetting and although we haven’t spoken in decades, I wish her peace and healing.” Cherie Currie also responded to the accusations the other day on Facebook and we have the posts below for you.

Mad-Max-Fury-Road-lovely-dayAll roads for the last weeks led up to this point as we counted down the days from the very first Mad Max film all the way to the new Mad Max: Fury Road film. In this film, Tom Hardy takes over the reigns of the character Mad Max as he continues to travel through the wastelands of what is left of post-apocalyptic Earth. This time Max is captured by war crazy warlords and used for the type of blood he has to refuel the warboys (fighters for their leader). While on a supposed mission to gasoline town, Imperator Furiosa (Charlize Theron) steals the evil warlord Immortan Joe’s (Hugh Keays-Byrne) women in an attempt to bring them to safety. The only problem is that if she wants to bring them to safety, she’ll need all the help she can get including Max. The film also stars Zoë Kravitz (Divergent) as Toast The Knowing, Nicholas Hoult (X-Men: Days Of Future Past) as Nux, Josh Helman (Jack Reacher) as Slit, Nathan Jones (Fearless) as Rictus Erectus, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley (Transformers: Dark Of The Moon) as The Splendid Angharad, Riley Keough (The Runaways) as Capable, Courtney Eaton in her first role as Cheedo the Fragile, John Howard (Young Einstein) as The People Eater, and the film was directed by the legendary George Miller. Before we get into the review, let’s check out some stats.

immortan joe toecutter

Hugh Keays-Byrne as Immortan Joe/Toecutter

I am just going to warn you right now that there are going to be some spoiler alerts in this paragraph so if you don’t want to know any of this info then stop reading. I did not realize going into this film that the original villain in the first Mad Max film in 1979 by the name of Toecutter was the villain in this film by the name of Immortan Joe. I have to say that Hugh Keays-Byrne put on great performances in both films, but this one he bumped up a notch playing a villain that was a typical totalitarian dictator. He is a man that has been in power of a society for so long because he held the keys to what the society needed and therefore he controlled them even to a point where he can’t breathe on his own, but it doesn’t matter because there are people in places of the society that help keep the facade alive and soldiers willing to die for him in exchange for immortality in the afterlife. Wow, this sounds kind of familiar doesn’t it? Immortan Joe is a symbol of where our society is today as we are constantly in battle with a region of the world who has minions that are willing to die for the belief of what comes in the afterlife. Immortan Joes society even matches that of the middle east where women are not important, but they are merely just breeders of future soldiers who will die for the cause. That is about as far as I’ll go in the article talking about the real life similarities.

MadMax_FR_I definitely want to get into the review of the film because that is what is truly important as well as pointing out some of the Easter eggs that I noticed in the film. You definitely knew that there were going to be a lot more kills in this film than any of the the three previous films in the series and I was hoping for that in a way. In the original three films, Mel Gibson’s Mad Max compiles a total of 40 kills/knockouts (with the most coming in The Road Warrior) while Tom Hardy’s Mad Max gets a total of 26 in one film. As usual in the last two of the original three films and in this one, there is no origin story and no love interest at all as well as no close friend hurt. The big boss is definitely defeated and all order is restored. Now as far as the Easter Eggs that I noticed from the film like the interceptor that he has for a total of five minutes or so in the film, gasoline town from the second film, and I could have sworn to see master blaster in this film, but the Master  wasn’t sitting on a chair strapped to the back of him. One other thing that I noticed in the film was a little trinket that Zoë Kravitz is playing with in the truck looks identical to the one that Max is playing with in The Road Warrior that he gives to the wild boomerang kid. One thing that I do have to say about this film is that while Tom Hardy put on an exceptional performance, I felt the real star of the film was Charlize Theron. She put on not only a bad ass performance, but she put on the performance of a lifetime in this film. She definitely held her own with this generations next big thing in Tom Hardy. The film has everything you could ever want from a Mad Max film from non stop action, over the top characters and costumes, and even the drama that comes along. This is a definite candidate for Bad Ass Movie Of The Year and it may just be the winner as well. I a going to give the film five fists out of five for a final grade.

guardians-of-the-galaxy-soundtrack-570x570Guardians Of The Galaxy: Awesome Mix Vol. 1 is only the second soundtrack that I have ever reviewed for the album of the week (Trick Or Treat being the first), but it’s the first soundtrack that I have reviewed that features various artists. The first soundtrack I ever reviewed was done entirely by the same artist, but I just felt this one was not one to miss. The great thing about Guardians Of The Galaxy besides all the awesome special effects, great acting, and amazing story was the soundtrack. It was definitely captured everyone’s attention as it supported the movie flawlessly and was a definite highlight. There are so many great songs from the 70’s on this album that every time you hear a different track, you get sent back in time to a better place. From The Raspberries to Marvin Gaye, this soundtrack has it all and at one point the album even hit number one on the Billboard Top 200 being the first soundtrack with previously released material to do so.

back cd cover1. Hooked On A Feeling by Blue Swede- the Swedish rock band who covered this song complete with the Hooga Chaka chant in 1974 made this a pop rock classic and Björn Skifs vocals are amazing. 5/5

2. Go All The Way by The Raspberries- This song was banned by the BBC back in the day due to it’s sexually suggestive lyrics, but man the song really rips. It has the balls of a rock song and the swagger to be sensitive enough for the ladies. 4/5

3. Spirit In The Sky by Norman Greenbaum- This song rips, but at the same time it has a very religious tone to the lyrics and that is due to the fact that Norman once watched Porter Wagoner on TV singing a gospel song and Norman felt he could do the same. 5/5

4. Moonage Daydream by David Bowie- This was David Bowie at his glam rock best during the Ziggy Stardust days. 5/5

5. Fooled Around And Fell In Love by Elvin Bishop- This is one of my favorite tracks on this album with an interesting story. Elvin Bishop was a blues guitarist and when he wrote this song, he felt that his gravelly voice  wouldn’t do the song justice so he invited his back up singer Mickey Thomas to sing the song. Little did he know Mickey would end up singing in Jefferson Starship and Starship. 5/5

6. I’m Not In Love by 10CC- The amazing pop rock song whose lyrics reveal that the narrator is essentially in denial about the song’s obvious romantic theme. The song also features a wall of voices that replaced the slow tempo beat the song originally had which was huge at the time. 4/5

7. I Want You Back by The Jackson 5- The Soul Train like classic from Michael Jackson and his brothers is one of the most amazing songs on the soundtrack that will be sure to have dancing along with baby Groot. 5/5va-guardians-of-the-galaxy-2014-cd-cover-1897918. Come And Get Your Love by Redbone- This is the funk classic by the Native American group Redbone that features a killer bass riff and a cool guitar riff during the chorus. 4/5

9. Cherry Bomb by The Runaways- This is the in your face, sexually charged debut track that introduced the world to Cherry Curie, Lita Ford, and Joan Jett. 5/5

10. Escape (The Piña Colada Song) by Rupert Holmes- This is the soft rock tune that makes you want to be on a beach drinking pina coladas, but you can’t help but sing along. 4/5

11. O-o-h Child by Five Stairsteps- The soul classic from Five Stairsteps that gives you hope that things will get better for you when you hear it. This very message is what made the song so popular with the pop and R&B crowds. 5/5

12. Ain’t No Mountain High Enough by Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell- This is another soul classic sung by the legend Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell. Both of them were a great contrast to each other when you hear them sing together and it’s another inspirational song. 5/5

My Final Thoughts– Much like the soundtrack to the film Stand By Me, I can listen to this over and over again without getting bored. The music brings me back to better times and isn’t that a powerful thing? All of the songs seem natural next to each other because they all flow well together even though some are so different than others. A lot of films can take note from this because they demonstrated how a soundtrack can help a film and not hinder it. In my opinion though, the film was amazing anyways, but the soundtrack definitely helped make everything seem perfect. I am giving the soundtrack 4.8 stars out of five for a final grade.

aaEveryone was looking forward to performances from A Day To Remember, Guns N Roses, and even Zakk Wylde’s, but nobody saw this coming at the 2014 Revolver Golden God Awards which was Slayer opening the show as the surprise performer. One of the things people expect at this particular awards show is to see who the surprise guest performer will be, but Slayer didn’t need it as the bulldozed their way through classics South Of Heaven, War Ensemble, and the premiere of a brand new track Implode. It was especially cool to see Marilyn Manson intro the band in. Right after Slayer was done with their set, it was time to meet this year’s hosts of the show since Chris Jericho wasn’t doing it this year. Eddie Trunk, Don Jamieson, and Jim Florentine of VH1 Classics That Metal Show were the hosts and their intro was horrible. Then it was off to the first presenters of the show as Mike Shinoda and Chester Bennington of Linkin Park came out to present The Best Vocalist Award (see below for complete list of winners), then that was followed by Dave Navarro and Jill Janus of Huntress presenting the Best Live Band Award.

a dayFrankie Palmeri of Emmure came out next to present the next live band of the night which was A Day To Remember who brought something completely different than Slayer, but they pleased the crowd as the band performed hit songs such as Right Back At It Again, End Of Me, and their closer All I Want. They were the second band to perform and still no surprise guest on stage with which is unusual at this point in the show. Then there was some technical difficulties as we waited for the cameras to show us Tony Hawk and Carmen Electra who were presenting the best live band award which was won by Avenged Sevenfold. They weren’t at The Nokia Theater, but they were brought in via satellite from a gig in Minneapolis where they gave the award away to a fan from the crowd. Jacoby Shaddix of Papa Roach and a couple of members from Memphis May Fire came out next to present the best new band award.

maxThen the legendary Doyle Wolfgang von Frankenstein along with the sexy brand new lead singer of Arch Enemy Alissa White-Gluz to intro The Pretty Reckless who were the next band to perform that night. Taylor Momsen is beautiful and very sexual on stage as most of you may know, but she has an amazing band that backs her up as they had one heck of a performance. The band performed their tracks Fucked Up World, Heaven Knows, and Going To Hell. Zakk Wylde would eventually come out to do a special Piano performance of In This River to pay tribute to all that have fallen over the years, but who was working the special video screwed up saying that Jani Lane was the singer for Motorhead. Then more technical difficulties plagued the show as we waited for Suicide Silence to take the stage to perform for the first time with their brand new singer Eddie Hermida. The band would play the tracks You Only Live Once and No Pity For A Coward, but it was their last song that was amazing. The band brought out Max Cavalera of Soulfly/Sepultura fame and they performed Roots on stage together that had me saying thank God someone finally had a guest on stage.

joan jettAlice Cooper presented The Golden God Award to Joan Jett who mentioned The Runaways. After her speech, she wanted to perform, but they nixed it so that Alice could introduce the performance. She opened up her performance with a rocking version of Bad Reputation which was tearing up the house. The next track she performed was a track that she had written with Dave Grohl called Any Weather which captured the spirit of the Blackhearts. Then Joan Jett & The Blackhearts were on fire with the next song I Hate Myself For Loving You for which she was joined onstage by Taylor Momsen. What I didn’t understand is that after the performance was done they performed it again to which Billy Gibbons would join them on stage to be the cheerleader. It was one heck of a performance anyways, but I believe they may have been shooting a version for television.

gnrAndrew Dice Clay came out to present the video montage for Axl Rose while Nicolas Cage presented Axl Rose of  Guns N Rose with the Ronnie James Dio Lifetime Achievement Award. Of course from that point on, we were wondering how long it was going to take for the band to actual perform. The crowd was definitely anxiously awaiting the band to hit the stage as we also knew that Duff McKagan would be performing with the band. The band eventually came out and started rocking right away with It’s So Easy. The band would blaze through one of my all time favorite tracks Welcome To The Jungle with a killer intro by DJ Ashba. One thing I will admit is that Axl’s vocals were a little off tonight when it came to his high notes. Then for the third track of the night they would dig into their latest album Chinese Democracy with the Better. The band would then perform This I Love from Chinese Democracy. Then the band kicked into the kickass Use Your Illusion II track You Could Be Mine. The band would continue with Sweet Child Of Mine and a Babe I’m Gonna Leave You/November Rain medley after Axl introduced the whole band to the crowd. My final thoughts on the show is that I thought it could have been executed a little bit better than it had been in the past. I certainly miss having Chris Jericho hosting the show, but after a while the boys from That Metal Show did fine.
