I have seen a lot of movies in the past week as I went to the theaters for a double feature twice this week and it can be a tiring experience especially if you’re not enjoying a film. It’s Friday which means that it is new movie release day and I watched some sneak peaks, so here are my reviews of Insidious: Chapter 3, Spy, and Entourage.
Insidious: Chapter 3– I’ll start the review with this film which is the third film in the series and it once again stars the brilliant Lin Shayer as the medium Elise Rainier. The movie is sort of a prequel as it takes place right before the Lambert Hauntings So essentially you don’t have to see the first two to get into this film. This time around the film focuses on Quinn Brenner (Stefanie Scott), n aspiring theater actress who just wants to talk to her mother who passed away the year before from cancer. Quinn goes to visit Elise who is a recluse at this point for fear of an evil spirit. Elise warns her that she could be calling the wrong spirits to her home if she doesn’t heed her warning. Unfortunately, an evil spirit attaches itself to her and slowly begins to steal her away from her father who is played by Dermot Mulroney and now hell have to rely on Elise to come out of her shell to help him before Quinn is gone for good. The film also stars Angus Sampson and Leigh Whannell as the famous Tucker and Specs. The film is pretty decent for the most part and the evil spirits look creepy as hell, but it lacked any real good scares as it had a lot of those cheap scares that most horror films have. For a final grade, I am going to give the latest horror flick a C+ because the ending just bothered me.
Spy– I am a huge fan of Melissa McCarthy who has starred in some really good comedies like The Heat, Identity Theft, and even Tammy (which had some strong points). She returns along with director Paul Feig (Bridesmaids) who will also be directing Ghostbusters with McCarthy, in this comedic twist on the spy genre. McCarthy plays an under appreciated CIA agent named Susan, who has something really good going on with the best spy they have in Bradley Fine (Jude Law). One day during a mission, it looks as if Fine was killed by the daughter of an arms dealer in Rayna (Rose Byrne). The only problem is that Rayna has revealed all the names of the spys in the world so the CIA has no choice, but to send McCarthy in because she is not a known agent. The film has everything you would want from the film as it has some great comedy specially with Jason Statham who is amazing in the film and it has plenty of action. There are so many tangibles in the film that make it worth seeing that I just can’t list. This was definitely the favorite of the four films that I watched and are reviewing for this piece. I definitely suggest that you check this one out as I am giving the film an A- for a final grade.
Entourage– I couldn’t wait to see this film as Entourage was definitely one of my favorite shows to ever air on HBO and the list of cameos is absolutely insane. The whole crew is back as Vincent Chase (Adrian Grenier), Eric (Kevin Connolly), Turtle (Jerry Ferrara), Drama (Kevin Dillon), and my favorite Ari Gold (Jeremy Piven). Ari has returned as the head of a studio while Vinny is trying to bounce back from a marriage gone wrong in 9 days. Ari agrees to allow Vinny to star and direct in the first film the studio will make with Ari in charge. The only problem is that Vinny has gone way over budget and they have to deal with the son of an investor (Haley Joel Osment) who is hell bent in throwing his weight around. The movie also features cameos by Russell Wilson, Mike Tyson, Ron Gronkowski, Mark Cuban, Gary Busey, David Arquette, Bob Saget, Andrew Dice Clay, and so many more. I will be the first one to admit that I loved the television show, but I think after watching this that it should have stayed just that. I’m not saying that the film is bad because it has some great moments, but the film is just OK. It was cool to see Mark Wahlberg and the real crew that inspired the show as well as Ronda Rousey, but all the cameos couldn’t save the film. I would check it out if you were a fan of the show, but don’t expect to be blown away. I am giving the film a B- for a final grade. One of the funniest scenes involves T.I. who is at a doctors appointment where he runs into Eric and Sloan (Emmanuelle Chriqui) who are expecting.
