Based On A Truesday Story: Unbroken (2014)

This is another new segment that we are going to be doing for this blog called Based On A Truesday Story which is a play on the words Tuesday and True. I’ll review a film every week that is based on a true story and this week we have an incredible one.  Unbroken is the story of Olympian Louie Zamperini (Jack O’Connell) and the heroic tale he has to tell of overcoming the odds to survive.  Louie and some soldiers become stranded in the middle of the pacific when some of the engines on their plane begin to fail and it crashes. Louie and two other men are on a raft for 47 days before they are discovered and held prisoner by the Japanese during World War II.  The film also stars Domhnall Gleeson (Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows: Part II) as Phil, Garrett Hedlund (Death Sentence) as Fitzgerald, Takamasa Ishihara (Oresama) as The Bird, Finn Wittrock (American Horror Story: Freak Show) as Mac, Jai Courtney (Divergent) as Cup, John Magaro (My Soul To Take) as Tinker, Maddalena Ischiale (Cemetery Man) as Louise, and the film was directed by Angelina Jolie (Maleficent) with the real Louie Zamperini as the adviser to the writers.

I have to tell you that the story is absolutely amazing and it really shows you just how far the human spirit can be pushed without breaking completely. The actors put themselves through hell in this film to capture the pain and suffering these men went through with the drastic weight loss. That was the part of the film that had me in awe was seeing the transformation of what these guys looked like in the beginning of the film to seeing them halfway through the film. Angelina does an absolute marvelous job directing this film and you have to see the cinematography for this film because they capture some amazing shots. One of the other incredible aspects of this film lies in the casting because Takamasa Ishihara plays the perfect villain in this film. The man looks like he is a tortured soul himself by the time Louie makes it to his camp, but the film is a battle between Louie and the Bird to see who will break whose will. This was an absolute incredible film that I am glad I went to see in the theaters. I am giving the film an A for a final grade.

Film News- Terminator: Genisys Trailer Released

When I first heard the news about the new Terminator film which is called Terminator: Genisys, I thought the original idea of the film that was explained to me sucked. I mean how can you take all four of the previous films and just throw them in the trash like they didn’t exist. Sarah Connor already knows that Terminators exist before Kyle Reese even gets their? Then I watched the trailer for the film which stars Arnold Schwarzenegger as the original Terminator, Emilia Clarke (Game Of Thrones) as Sarah Connor, Jai Courtney (Divergent) as Kyle Reese, and Jason Clark (Zero Dark Thirty) as John Connor and it all makes sense now. Apparently, something happened in the past that it wiped out the past they think they know in the future before Kyle Reese is sent back. Now, not only do they have to fight other Terminators and machines, but they also have to fight a T-1000 which is a shape shifting Terminator originally played by Robert Patrick, but now played by Lee Byung-hun. Film News 12/3/2014

Some big news for fans of DC Comics and the highly anticipated David Ayer directed Suicide Squad project was released yesterday that will surely leave mixed emotions across the scope. Jared Leto, the Oscar winning actor (for Dallas Buyers Club) has officially signed on to play The Joker in the new Suicide Squad film while Will Smith (Men In Black, Independence Day) has signed on to play Deadshot. Both of them are going to be joined by Tom Hardy (The Dark Knight Rises) who plays Rick Flagg and Margot Robbie (The Wolf Of Wall Street) who plays Harley Quinn. Those are the big names that are attached to the film, but they are joined by lesser known actors Jai Courtney (Divergent) who will play Captain Boomerang and supermodel Cara Delevingne will play Enchantress. The group have begun pre-production on the film and it’s set to film in and around Toronto from April to about September.

Warner Bros. Studios worldwide production boss Greg Sullivan had this to say in a statement regarding the film, “The Warner Bros. roots are deep on this one. David Ayer returns to the studio where he wrote ‘Training Day’ and brings his incredible ability to craft multidimensional villains to this iconic DC property with a cast of longtime Warner collaborators Will Smith and Tom Hardy, and other new and returning favorites.” Apparently, the studio is still looking for someone to play the pivotal role of Amanda Waller, the woman in charge and responsible for the Suicide Squad, but all signs are pointing to Viola Davis (How To Get Away With Murder) potentially having the role. Also, there is a good possibility that Jesse Eisenberg could be joining the cast to reprise his role as Lex Luthor after having shot Superman V. Batman. The film has a theatrical release date of August 5, 2016.

In other news, Kickboxer the remake apparently has it’s final star to get the cameras rolling. This is one of those films that I truly believe doesn’t need a remake because the first was so classic, but Hollywood calls the shots and this one is moving ahead with Jean Claude Van Damme, “The Muscles From Brussels”, is returning for the remake of the film, but not to take the role you think he is. Dennis Chan played the role of Xian Chow in the original Kickboxer film, but now Jean Claude is going to be playing him in the new film as he mentors Alain Moussi (White House Down) who now plays the role of Kurt Sloane to take on Tong Po who will now be played by WWE Superstar Dave Bautista (Guardians Of The Galaxy). They are also joined by George St. Pierre, Sam Medina, and T.J. Storm. According to The Hollywood Reporter Producer Ted Fields commented on JCVD joining the cast, “We are so excited to have Kickboxer roll into production and to have JCVD in the role of Master Chow, passing the torch to Alain, to have him lead the franchise to a new generation.” Tony Jaa was originally supposed to play the part of Master Chow, but due to scheduling conflicts, he had to drop out of the film.

It’s almost the end of 2014 which means that the best of lists are going to start rolling out and people re going to be thinking of what rocked or what sucked about 2014.
