For eight years, I have been covering horror films on my blog for something I have called Eddie’s 31 Days Of Halloween and it has been a blast. I have seen films for this blog that were some of my favorites as well as I have seen films that I never thought I would watch. So we have decided to kick off our eighth year with a film franchise I have loved since the first time I watched them. The name of the film is Critters Attack! and it was directed by Bobby Miller (The Cleanse) and the film follows 20 year old Drea (Tashiana Washington). You see Drea hasn’t had it easy in life lately with her mother dying in a car accident which left her and her brother Phillip (Jaeden Noel) to live with their alcoholic sheriff Uncle (Stephen Jennings). All Drea wants to do is go to the same college that her mom went to, but one day is given an opportunity to babysit the dean of the history departments kids. Sounds like an easy job and you get a good word, but that is not the case as the famous alien Critters are a bump in the road she needs to avoid. The film also stars Ava Preston (Shazam!) as Trissy Lacy, Jack Fulton (12 Monkeys) as Jake Lacy, Dee Wallace (Critters) as Dee, Ho Chow (Filth City) as Chef Loong, and introducing Alex Jeaven as Mandy.
Overall, is it the greatest horror film of the year? Maybe to someone out there, but no it’s not, but that is not the point of this film. Was it a fun film to watch? Sure, it had a lot of cool moments that were nods to some of the original films like the rolling boulder of Critters among other things like Dee Wallace returning to play a bounty hunter. You have to think that most everything in the series has been done so writer Scott Lobdell (Happy Death Day) had to do something to revitalize the series so he added the element of a different looking type of Critter that was more girly and a heck of a lot cuter than her counterparts. Of course, the kids have no idea what she is, but all they know is that she is on their side and they are running with it. It was a nice element to add to the series whether you thought it was necessary or not, but she definitely has a reason to be here and you’ll have to find out for yourselves. With any TV Horror film, you are going to get some awkward moments and this film definitely had quite a few and they all dealt with Alex Jeaven’s character and our main character. Our director is known for adding a comedic twist to everything and he definitely did that in various moments like when Ho Chow’s character was around and it was definitely funny. I have to be honest in saying that I didn’t think this film sucked at all, it’s definitely a Cheeseball Cinema worthy film and that is because of how it can be very fun at times. That is why I am going to give the film an B- for a final gradecause it’s just above a C+.
