hdrHalloween is now only two days away and I hope that all of you have been getting in the spirit of the holiday especially with Eddie’s 31 Days Of Halloween. I wanted to watch something cool for today and I really love anthology horror films so I chose to watch the new film Holidays. Holidays is an holiday anthology film that goes through the various holidays of the calendar year. For example, a girl wants to get her crush a heart so he can get the surgery he needs, it’s a St. Patrick’s Day version of Rosemary’s Baby, but with reptiles, the Easter bunny and Jesus, a girl willing to go to the beyond to find her long lost father, a webcam scumbag who won’t let his girls celebrate Halloween, and so many more. The film stars Lorenza Izzo (The Green Inferno) as Jean, Seth Green (Robot Chicken) as Pete Gunderson, Harley Quinn Smith (Tusk) as Holly, Ruth Bradley (Flyboys) as Elizabeth Cullen, Madeleine Coghlan (Share) as Maxine, Clare Grant (Walk The Line) as Sarah Gunderson, Harley Morenstein (Tusk) as Ian, Jocelin Donahue (Insidious: Chapter 2) as Carol, Andrew Bowen (Po) as Reggie, Ashley Greene (Yoga Hosers) as Bree, Savannah Kennick as Heidi, Sonja Kinski (Vinyl) as Crystal, Aleksa Palladino (Boardwalk Empire) as Persian, and many more. The film features the following directors Kevin Smith, Anthony Scott Burns, Kevin Kolsch, Nicholas McCarthy, Adam Egypt Mortimer, Ellen Reid, Gary Shore, Sarah Adina Smith, Scott Stewart, and Dennis Widmyer.

holidays-easterThis was an interesting film to say the least because it seemed that every story was like a fairy tale or whatever because there was always a moral to the story (or at least some did). The New Year’s Eve one featured a guy who kidnaps his dates for long periods of time and if they haven’t fallen in love with him he eliminates them. Well, he sort of gets what is coming to him in this one. One story was a girl who was told by her mom not to look at the Easter bunny and do you think she listened? There is more that you just have to watch for yourself and you be the judge of what the moral of the stories are. One of my favorite segments of the film was definitely the one belonging to Kevin Smith cause he just goes over the top when it comes to what he makes (e.g. Tusk). All of the special effects in the film were very cool, the stories were actually very well written, and the acting was good. The film kind of had it all for an anthology film which is rare because some can definitely be better than others. My least favorite segment is a hard one to choose because I liked them all, but the St. Patrick’s Day one just ended very goofy for my taste. The film is available on Netflix right now as we speak and it may ruin some holidays for some of you. I am going to give the film an A- for a final grade.

Ouija_2014_posterI had heard nothing, but bad things about this film and how Michael Bay was turning all of the famous Hasbro board games into films, but what people do not realize is that there have been other films that have explored the use of Ouija boards like all of the Witchboard films and a film entitled Satan’s Blood that I have reviewed all for Cheeseball Cinema. The world famous Ouija board which was first introduced by businessman Elijah Bond back in 1890 is something that has intrigued people and divided people based on what it can supposedly do. When Bond introduced it, it was considered harmless until American spiritualist Pearl Curran popularized it as a way to communicate with the other side during World War 1 which brings us back to the film directed by special effects guru Stiles White (Jurassic Park 3). The film centers on a group of friends that want to contact a friend named Deb (Shelley Hennig) who had committed suicide to find out why. What they don’t realize is that they conjured a spirit like no other through the Ouija board that they’ll have to figure out how to get rid of before it’s too late. The film stars Olivia Cooke (The Quiet Ones) as Laine, Ana Coto (DisCONNECTED) as Sarah, Daren Kagasoff (The Secret Life Of The American Teenager) as Trevor, Bianca A. Santos (The Fosters) as Isabelle, Douglas Smith (Big Love) as Pete, Lin Shaye (Insidious: Chapter 2) as Paulina Zander, Claudia Katz (The Black Dahlia) as Mother, Sunny May Allison (Cooties) as Doris, and one of my favorites from the 80’s in Robin Lively (Teen Witch) as Mrs. Galardi.

ouija-movie-picture-16I have to be perfectly honest with everyone regarding this film because the only way you’ll find this film terrifying is if your 13 years old and a female. I’m not trying to be sexist when I say that, but I did not find any part of the film terrifying at all. The movie was a fun experience, but it failed to do what The Conjuring or even the Insidious films did and that was to have real terrifying moments. I was expecting to have those fun-house moments when someone pops out of nowhere to scare the living daylights out of you, but that just wasn’t present here. There was nothing wrong withe the acting or the cinematography in this film, it just was a major letdown in my opinion. They could have done so much more with the characters they had and they could have made it scarier, but when you’re faced with a PG-13 rating there is only so much you can do. Don’t be swayed by my words if you were planning to see it because it was a fun film to watch, just not scary. Lin Shaye is terrific in this film playing a mental patient with a motive so wait until you see that and Robin Lively basically made a cameo in this film as all parents are a non-presence in this film. I also do believe that Olivia Cooke did carry the film as well as she is the main star after all. She was the glue for the film because she kept it all together. For a final grade, I am going to give the film a B- only because it didn’t bore the crap out of me and for the fact that it was fun to watch and critique. Mess with a Ouija board if you dare, but remember the consequences and that it carries a heavy burden.

curse of chuckyDuring last years 31 Days Of Halloween, I presented the very first Child’s Play as one of the films and I even went into detail about how it looked like a My buddy and me doll. Well, now I won’t have to go through that talk again, but the killer doll is back. Thew film is directed by the series longtime writer Don Mancini  and it’s stars Fiona Dourif (The Messenger) as Nica, a woman confined to a wheel chair that found her mother dead after receiving the doll in the mail. She doesn’t suspect anything until her visiting niece Alice (Summer H. Howell) starts to play with the doll and weird things start happening to her visiting family. The movie also stars Danielle Bisutti (Insidious Chapter 2) as Barb, Maitland McConnell (Killer Movie) as Jill,  Brennan Elliott (Flight 93) as Ian, A Martinez (General Hospital) as a priest, and Brad Dourif as Charles Lee Ray and the voice of Chucky.

chuckyI was a little excited when I heard they had made another one and in my opinion they were delivering until we get to the end. Overall, I have to say that it wasn’t that bad, I didn’t like the way Chucky looked and I thought they had abandoned all the films in the series until later in the film when his stitches are revealed. So, after revealing the real Chucky, I wondered where they were going to take it or how they would handle the past. I actually didn’t enjoy the back story because I thought it was a little cheesy. I won’t tell you what it is because I want you to be the judge of that. I will say that I didn’t see the ending coming although I knew who Chucky’s first three victims were going to be because it was obvious.  There’s a surprise visit from Chucky’s past in the film and from what the ending revealed, their could be another Chucky film in the distant future. I am going to give the film a B because it was enjoyable, but it also gets that grade because of the back story.
