I saw an article that said that Slayer compared themselves to AC/DC in terms of losing an iconic member and moving on after their death. Of course, they are referencing the fact that AC/DC moved on past the death of Bon Scott to become even bigger than they were with Brian Johnson. Thrash Metal titans Slayer are looking to do the same thing as they move on past the death of iconic member Jeff Hanneman. After the Golden God awards last year, Slayer unleashed the first track off their new album Repentless (The album is available September 11TH) called Implode and for record store day they unleashed the track When The Stillness Comes for all of their fans to hear. Now the band is back with an album cover that is sure to make Christians every where cringe at the very sight of it and they have another single for you in the title track. Slayer’s Kerry King describes the title track as their Hanneanthem, “I went with it based on Slayer. Slayer is repentless; Slayer’s always been repentless. I said, ‘You know what, I should write something about how I think Jeff looked at the world, because he looked at the world exactly how Slayer looked at the world.’ Plus little ‘Jeff-isms.’ It was both easy and difficult. The difficult part was doing it justice; I didn’t want to just throw it together. I wanted it to be solid, as deep as it could be without getting personal.” Check out the track for yourself below and pre-order the album now through this link. Check out the track listing and artwork below as well.

A_Day_to_Remember,_Common_Courtesy_2013_albumI’m taking another break from reviewing metal albums this week to focus on some music outside of the metal genre, but never fear because we will return to Metal as soon as the tournament is over and done with (I am going to review an album from the winning band). The first time I saw A Day To Remember (referred to by fans on occasion as ADTR) was on the 2014 Revolver Golden God Awards when they performed live. I have to be honest and say that I do have a softer side to myself and I actually enjoyed listening to them that night. The album that I chose for the album of the week is their latest record Common Courtesy which was released digitally on October 13, 2013 and psychically on November 13 of the same year. The band is made up of Jeremy McKinnon (Vocals), Josh Woodard (Bass), Neil Westfall (Guitar), Alex Shelnutt (Drums), and Kevin Skaff (Lead Guitar and Vocals) and this was the Pop Punk/Metalcore band’s fifth album that they released and it was their first self released album. You have to give it to them for doing that because it’s a bold move, but the band was in a law suit with their former label Victory Records. The band had released this statement back in 2013 saying to Alt-Press, “A Day To Remember would like to make it clear that they did not announce nor seek any attention regarding their ongoing suit with Victory Records. This information has been public record since May of 2011 and they have no intention of speaking publicly or disparagingly regarding their disagreement with Victory. A Day To Remember will continue to release music for their fans.” Nevertheless, the band released it to critical acclaim as the album peaked at #37 on The Billboard Top 200, #5 On The Billboard Alternative Albums, #1 on the US Billboard Hard Rock Albums, #4 on the Billboard Independent Albums, and #8 on The Billboard Rock Albums.

Original Album Cover

1. City Of Ocala– The band does a great job of mixing that pop punk sound with the metalcore double bass riffs as they sing about their hometown of Ocala, Florida and all the memories and not forgetting where you came from. 4/5

2. Right Back At It Again– This was the band’s first single off the record and  it was almost excluded off the record. The song in the beginning showcases the band’s metalcore sound while the rest of the song is all pop punk. 4/5

3. Sometimes You’re the Hammer, Sometimes You’re the Nail– This was the last song the band wrote for the record in a track that I feel is about overcoming situations while also realizing that not everything goes your way. The song has the typical metalcore breakdowns with the screaming vocals, but it’s pretty bad ass and also has the softer vocals during the chorus. 4/5

4. Dead & Buried– This is a track that the band says needed minimal adjustments when they heard it. This track continues in the metalcore sound with a bad ass guitar riff. 4/5

5. Best Of Me– The band described this track as having a Foo Fighters feel to it and I have to agree as far as the song structure and the vocals on the chorus are concerned. 4/5

ADayToRemember20136. I’m Already Gone– This is a cool track that has a mix of acoustic with a a touch of electric in a track about a relationship that ended the wrong way. Once one of the partners (boy or girl) gets back on their feet, the other says no that they’ve already moved on. 5/5

7. Violence (Enough Is Enough)– McKinnon once said in a interview that the track was, “about different perspectives from the world and why people do terrible things to each other.” The band definitely turns the volume up from the last track to this one as they return to their metalcore roots. 4/5

8. Life @ 11– The band returns to a more pop punk sound for this track about not being afraid of your past and just move on. 4/5

9. I Surrender– A very cool track that was written four years ago, but McKinnon was never happy with some of the verses he had originally written, but he fixed it up for this record. The track is about surrendering to someone that you loved from your past because you realize that you do love them. 4/5

10. Life Lessons Learned the Hard Way– This is one of the heavier tracks on the record which the band admitted that they wanted. It’s pretty badass, but it’s a song about targeting the bullies who cause hurt to people. 4.5/5

CS513003-01B-BIG11. End Of Me– This is one of my favorite tracks on the record which has pop sensibility and the track is infectious. The track is about a relationship that the narrator realizes that he has probably lost the best thing he ever had. 5/5

12. The Document Speaks for Itself– This is a track about the lawsuit the band was going through with Victory Records. 4/5

13. I Remember– This is a track about all the crazy memories the band has gone through over the years while on the road over some pop punk sounds. 4/5

My Final Thoughts– This has a great mix of metalcore with pop punk that is infectious when you listen to it. As I said, I discovered them performing live at The Golden God Awards last year and I had to look them up and I have a lot of respect for a band that goes out on there own and releases their own album. I really enjoyed listening to the record and so I am going to give it four stars out of five for a final grade.

aaEveryone was looking forward to performances from A Day To Remember, Guns N Roses, and even Zakk Wylde’s, but nobody saw this coming at the 2014 Revolver Golden God Awards which was Slayer opening the show as the surprise performer. One of the things people expect at this particular awards show is to see who the surprise guest performer will be, but Slayer didn’t need it as the bulldozed their way through classics South Of Heaven, War Ensemble, and the premiere of a brand new track Implode. It was especially cool to see Marilyn Manson intro the band in. Right after Slayer was done with their set, it was time to meet this year’s hosts of the show since Chris Jericho wasn’t doing it this year. Eddie Trunk, Don Jamieson, and Jim Florentine of VH1 Classics That Metal Show were the hosts and their intro was horrible. Then it was off to the first presenters of the show as Mike Shinoda and Chester Bennington of Linkin Park came out to present The Best Vocalist Award (see below for complete list of winners), then that was followed by Dave Navarro and Jill Janus of Huntress presenting the Best Live Band Award.

a dayFrankie Palmeri of Emmure came out next to present the next live band of the night which was A Day To Remember who brought something completely different than Slayer, but they pleased the crowd as the band performed hit songs such as Right Back At It Again, End Of Me, and their closer All I Want. They were the second band to perform and still no surprise guest on stage with which is unusual at this point in the show. Then there was some technical difficulties as we waited for the cameras to show us Tony Hawk and Carmen Electra who were presenting the best live band award which was won by Avenged Sevenfold. They weren’t at The Nokia Theater, but they were brought in via satellite from a gig in Minneapolis where they gave the award away to a fan from the crowd. Jacoby Shaddix of Papa Roach and a couple of members from Memphis May Fire came out next to present the best new band award.

maxThen the legendary Doyle Wolfgang von Frankenstein along with the sexy brand new lead singer of Arch Enemy Alissa White-Gluz to intro The Pretty Reckless who were the next band to perform that night. Taylor Momsen is beautiful and very sexual on stage as most of you may know, but she has an amazing band that backs her up as they had one heck of a performance. The band performed their tracks Fucked Up World, Heaven Knows, and Going To Hell. Zakk Wylde would eventually come out to do a special Piano performance of In This River to pay tribute to all that have fallen over the years, but who was working the special video screwed up saying that Jani Lane was the singer for Motorhead. Then more technical difficulties plagued the show as we waited for Suicide Silence to take the stage to perform for the first time with their brand new singer Eddie Hermida. The band would play the tracks You Only Live Once and No Pity For A Coward, but it was their last song that was amazing. The band brought out Max Cavalera of Soulfly/Sepultura fame and they performed Roots on stage together that had me saying thank God someone finally had a guest on stage.

joan jettAlice Cooper presented The Golden God Award to Joan Jett who mentioned The Runaways. After her speech, she wanted to perform, but they nixed it so that Alice could introduce the performance. She opened up her performance with a rocking version of Bad Reputation which was tearing up the house. The next track she performed was a track that she had written with Dave Grohl called Any Weather which captured the spirit of the Blackhearts. Then Joan Jett & The Blackhearts were on fire with the next song I Hate Myself For Loving You for which she was joined onstage by Taylor Momsen. What I didn’t understand is that after the performance was done they performed it again to which Billy Gibbons would join them on stage to be the cheerleader. It was one heck of a performance anyways, but I believe they may have been shooting a version for television.

gnrAndrew Dice Clay came out to present the video montage for Axl Rose while Nicolas Cage presented Axl Rose of  Guns N Rose with the Ronnie James Dio Lifetime Achievement Award. Of course from that point on, we were wondering how long it was going to take for the band to actual perform. The crowd was definitely anxiously awaiting the band to hit the stage as we also knew that Duff McKagan would be performing with the band. The band eventually came out and started rocking right away with It’s So Easy. The band would blaze through one of my all time favorite tracks Welcome To The Jungle with a killer intro by DJ Ashba. One thing I will admit is that Axl’s vocals were a little off tonight when it came to his high notes. Then for the third track of the night they would dig into their latest album Chinese Democracy with the Better. The band would then perform This I Love from Chinese Democracy. Then the band kicked into the kickass Use Your Illusion II track You Could Be Mine. The band would continue with Sweet Child Of Mine and a Babe I’m Gonna Leave You/November Rain medley after Axl introduced the whole band to the crowd. My final thoughts on the show is that I thought it could have been executed a little bit better than it had been in the past. I certainly miss having Chris Jericho hosting the show, but after a while the boys from That Metal Show did fine.

I have some news for all of you regarding this years Revolver Golden God awards, the one award show that celebrates metal the right way. If you thought the previous Golden God Awards shows were cool, this year is going to blow your mind. Joan Jett is going to be receiving the Golden God Award which will presented to her by 2011 winner Alice Cooper. When he was asked about Jett, Cooper said, “No one deserves this award MORE than Joan Jett. She’s never compromised who she is — she’s a rocker through and through. I wish some of the younger bands had the balls that Joan Jett does!” Guns ‘N Roses frontman Axl Rose is going to be presented with the Ronnie James Dio Lifetime Achievement Award. The next piece of the news that absolutely rocks is the fact that Guns ‘N Roses, Joan Jett & The Blackhearts, Korn, Black Label Society, The Pretty Reckless, and A Day To Remember are the performers at this years event. Fans will also have a chance to vote for all the categories including the newly renamed Best Guitarist award which is being renamed The Dimebag Darrell Best Guitarist Award. Vinnie Paul had this to say about the name changing of the award, “I am very honored that Revolver is renaming the Best Guitarist Award after Dime! He was and always will be what heavy-metal guitar playing is all about. This award is given to the person with those special skills that sets them apart from others. Dime always went for it and I know he would be proud of the winner of this award. So go for it and may the best shredder win!
