I had put off reviewing this album for a while because I was too caught up in what was being released. I never forget the day this album came out, I was in college (The first time around) and I left my class to go to the record store just to buy this the day it came out. Limp Bizkit was one of the biggest bands at the time of the release and little did we know what chain of events would happen next. Limp Bizkit was riding high on the success of their second album The Significant Other with it smash hits Nookie and N 2gether Now with Method Man. So, the question at the time was how was Fred Durst, Wes Borland, John Otto, and Sam Rivers going to be to the table this time around? There are a lot of theories as to what Chocolate Starfish And The Hot Dog Flavored Water means. The best explanation that I have seen is that Chocolate Starfish is a scatological reference to the appearance of a human anus. Hot Dog Flavored Water is an inside joke that Wes Borland had come up with after they had stopped at a truck stop. According to Wes, Fred Durst would call himself the chocolate starfish because people thought of him as an asshole.
The album’s intro is very much like the intro they had on the last album where the robot claims that it’s not a test and Limp Bizkit is in the house. The next track on the record Hot Dog is one of the most infamous tracks because he says the F word 48 times and for the fact that Fred mocks the songs Perfect Drug, Closer, and Burn by The Nine Inch Nails. Apparently, Trent had said something negative about Fred and so Fred retaliated. My Generation is the next track on the record that musically it seems that Wes and Otto were playing off of each other where it seems the music is intertwined much like the band Primus. I used to think this song was my generations battlecry because since we had started elementary, we never had any respect from any authority figures. Full Nelson is up next and it explodes right onto your speakers as Fred preached throughout the whole song how he never gets any respect from anyone, but if your face to face with him you better be to rumble. My Way was always one of my all time favorite tracks from this album because it has a certain swagger about it. Fred decides to sing more on the track instead of rapping and wes’s playing is a little different than usual. Instead of the straight up Power chords that were used to getting in metal, he was playing more complex melodic chords.
Rollin (Air Raid Vehicle) is technically the second single off the record, but it was one of the hottest jams that year and do not try to deny that every time you hear this song you move your arms side to side liking your driving. Livin It Up features the band sampling The Eagles Life in The Fast Line. The One is the next track and it’s all about Fred and his never ending quest for love. Getcha Groove On is the hip hop track where Fred and Xhibit trade rhymes. It’s N 2gether Now, but it was cool to hear. Take A Look Around is the amazing track where Wes Borland takes The Mission Impossible theme and he brings it to another level. It may be the best song these guys ever recorded. It’ll be Ok is a little bit on the darker side of the plane which means it’s another song about love being disappointing. Boiler is another dark track which explores the same themes as the last song. This song has a really great riff to it where it’s heavy at the beginning, soft and clean during the verse before it explodes again into the chorus. It was also the last music video to feature Wes in it before he had quit the band. Hold On is a pretty cool song that featured Scott Weiland of STP singing alongside Fred Durst in a really primitive type acoustic song. Rollin (Urban Assault Vehicle) is just a remix that features DMX, Method Man, Redman, etc. It’s definitely one of my favorite albums that Limp Bizkit has ever released. That is why I am giving it 4 stars out of five.
