For this week’s album of the week I chose one of my all time favorite KoЯn records that the band released. It’s their fifth studio album and was follow up to 1999’s Issue which at the time was the darkest KoЯn album to date. It was also the most expensive album KoЯn had released at the time ranging in the 4 million range. Michael Beinhorn at the time was known for producing Hole’s Celebrity Skin and Marilyn Manson’s Mechanical Animals. The album debuted at number two on the Billboard Top 200 selling 434,000 copies in it’s first week and as of January 2013, it has sold 1,612,602 copies in the US and over 4 million worldwide. Things weren’t always easy for the group though. They are reports that tensions were high amongst the five of them causing them to write music in Arizona to see if the change of scenery would help. During the tour that followed the release, the band even contemplated firing Fieldy due to his drug habit, but obviously they never did. Let’s check out the album.

a2The first track on the album which was also the first single, Here To Stay, starts off like a guitar making noise until it’s very brief pause. Then out of nowhere it explodes and the music hits you like a ten ton hammer. My favorite thing about the song is the groove because man does it ever groove and Jonathan’s voice matches over it perfectly. Make Believe is the next track on the record and KoЯn was always known for making unique sounds come from their guitars. Jonathan comes in after the eerie guitar riffs and he sort of raps and sings over the riffs before they explode into the chorus. Blame starts off much like Here To Stay before exploding into the track. The best is the riffs played during the verses because it’s almost like the calm before the storm as it’s real mellow before the rage shines through in the chorus. Hollow Life is a very dark track on the album in that it starts off slow and ominous. The chorus gets a little scarier as Jonathan screams about living a hollow life. Bottled Up is one of the heaviest and grooviest songs on the record about keeping hatred all bottled up. It’s also a song that I took to heart because I at one time had insecure feelings about my appearance and I always felt Jonathan spoke to me.

File:Korn thoughtless.jpgThoughtless is the next track and the lyrical themes to the song are dark. It was the second single released off the album and it was about an experience where Jonathan Davis was bullied in school and he dreams of seeking revenge on those who bullied him. Hating is one of my favorite tracks on the whole album and it starts with this cool guitar riff as the drums start to kick in, you get this eerie feel to it and then Jon takes over. It’s another track on the record that deals with the ever growing theme of hate that Korn has explored. One of my favorite parts is the pre-chorus where David and Fieldy are doing their best with the groove. One More Time is the next track on the record and it has a Nightmare On Elm Street like groove to it, at least that’s what I hear. The harmonizing on the track is cool as you can hear they tracked Jonathan’s vocals a bunch of times to get the effect. Alone I Break was the third and final single off the album. They traded in the distortion for clean guitars and some funky bass lines. I saw the song described as a haunting power ballad which is such a true description. Apparently, Head and Munky used custom built 14 string guitars for the track to create that wide chorus effect.

a3Embrace is another track that is just pure metal with the screaming vocals and big power chords. It sort of combines elements of early Korn which included that hip hop influence with metal grooves. Beat It Upright has a major bass groove that feels like their just bouncing the sounds off the ground. It’s all about the bass in this track that is just hoppin and it you’ll be bobbing your head to it. No One’s There is another one of my favorite tracks on the record that is just dark to the core. It’s another one of those tracks that I felt really spoke to me on all levels of my life. I really love this album and I would say that it’s one of my top three KoЯn releases. I told my brother that KoЯn to me is what Motley Crue was to him when he was growing up in the 80’s. It’s funny, before this album was released I had never had the chance of seeing KoЯn live and when I heard they were playing I made my brother go to Connecticut with me to see them. It was the greatest experience of my life. I am giving the album 4.5 stars out of five.

courtesy of wikipedia

I chose an album that just about has as much controversy behind it as any rock or music nerd like myself could want. It was Vince Neil’s first solo album that he would release after he had left Motley Crue and it features two of the best talents in rock/metal at the time. Phil Soussan, who previously played with Ozzy Osbourne on The Ultimate Sin album answered a call to help out a friend write an album and recruit a band to tour with. When Vince secured Steve Stevens, one of the most underrated and under appreciated guitarists of the 1980’s, the controversy begins there. Adrian Vandenburg of Whitesnake fame was originally tapped to play guitars on the record, but to the advice of the label, he grabbed the former Billy Idol guitarist instead. During the recording process of this record, Steve Stevens wanted to write and record all the bass and guitar parts so Phil was let go. Robbie Crane, who was the rhythm guitarist at the time would move to bass, and Vik Foxx was the drummer. After the album was released, apparently all of the writing credits was given to Stevens even though Soussan had written five of the songs before he was let go. He took the band to court and he won the case with Stevens name removed off the tracks. Can you feel the controversy already? Let’s check out the album!

File:Vince Neil Sister of Pain.jpg

courtesy of wikipedia

Look Into Her Eyes has that Ultimate Sin sound to it especially when the song kicks off. Steven’s guitar playing is amazing and the rhythm section is terrific as well. The song has that balls to the wall style of rock with a swagger as big as LA’s and you have to love that ray gun sound you hear during Steven’s solo’s. Sister Of Pain was the second single to be released off the album and the song is like a woman, fast and fun to play. Can’t Have Your Cake has a very funky beginning with the bass before it runs you over like a hot rod in hell. The song is about one of those important lessons you mother teaches you that you can’t have your cake and eat it too. Fine, Fine Wine is one of my favorite songs on the song because of how raunchy and kick ass the band’s sound is. This is raunch-filled rock at it’s finest and fans were eating it up like cake and I know the song isn’t about actual wine. The Edge has this amazing flamenco intro by Steve Stevens before it kicks into the heaviest song Vince Neil ever recorded in his whole life. The flamenco will return later in this song and I feel it separates this track from the rest. By far my favorite track on the whole record, hands down.  Can’t Change Me has more of that Spanish guitar feel to it in the beginning as Stevens proves he can do anything. The song isn’t a ballad even though it has that feel to it, but think of this song and compare it to Time For Change off Motley Crue’s Dr. Feelgood record. What helps this is the fact that Tommy Shaw and Jack Blades  wrote the track for the album. The next track on the album is an amazing cover of Sweet’s Set Me Free.

back coverLiving Is A Luxury is the next track on the album is another raunchy as hell track about reminding that your lucky to be alive in this world. I could have sworn I heard some horns in the track to go with the bands ability to slow the track down before they melt your face off with the chorus. You’re Invited (But Your Friend Can’t Come) is probably one of the most recognizable tracks on the record since it was the first single and it appeared in the film Encino Man that starred Pauly Shore and Brendan Fraser. When I saw Vince open for Poison some years back, this was the only solo song he performed. Gettin Hard is one of the coolest tracks, but at times it sounds like something Billy Idol would have sang on. Don’t get me wrong the song is as cool as the breeze and it has that hip shaking body groovin melody to it. Forever was the ballad on the album that was dedicated to EX-Wives Of Rock star Sharise Neil, who divorced him earlier in the year. Vince is always thinking of ya even after the divorce papers have been filed.

Steve Stevens!!!

Steve Stevens!!!

What is there not to love about this record? It is by far the best album Vince has ever appeared on musically just for the fact that Steve Stevens is the MVP of the record. As I stated in the beginning, he is the most underrated guitarist out of the 80s. Just take a listen and tell me that you don’t agree with me because it’s better than Carved In Stone and Tattoos & Tequila. It was definitely better than that hunk of crap Motley Crue answered back with at the time with John Corabi. I am going to give the record 4 stars out of five.

215px-Reanimator_posterThis was a horror movie that I have always heard people talk about and its surprisingly one that I have never seen in my life. So, if you’re hosting a blog about watching movies, then why not watch the classic H.P. Lovecraft about re-animating life. The movie is about a scientist that is obsessed with the idea of being able to bring someone back to life after they have died with a serum. After a failure in Switzerland, Herbert West travels to Arkham, MA (a fictional city) to Miskatonic University where he plans to continue his experiments with more specimen and in the process he involves his roommate Dan Cain (Bruce Abbott), a fellow medical student, into his dangerous experiments where things start to spiral out of control. The film also stars Barbara Crampton (The Lords Of Salem) as Dan’s girlfriend and daughter of the dean Meghan Halsey, David Gale (The Edge Of Night) as Dr. Hill, Peter Kent (Total Recall ’90) as one of the re-animated corpse’s and Robert Sampson (Falcon Crest) as Dean Halsey in this cult horror classic.

Barbara CramptonThe film starts off with a woman waiting by a door where apparently Herbert West has locked himself in the room with someone and sounds of struggle can be heard from the room. We see that another Doctor is going crazy and making his own eyes burst out of his head. West says that he has given the doctor life when people are accusing him of murdering the doctor. That wasn’t a bad way to start the film because you need something to help set the rest of the film so that the wheels start turning. I thought that Combs acting was a little corny at first, but he impressed me the further we got into the film and Dr. Hill ends up being a real creepy villain. The whole scene where his decapitated head is molesting the deans daughter was a little creepy, but expected in a horror film since we see a lot of nudity and weird scenes in the eighties. Barbara Crompton was a cutie back in the eighties and her acting was top notch. I was very impressed with her in this film. The make up department was on top of their game in this film and Stuart Gordon’s vision of a different type of monster movie paid off because this is a definite classic. The film features 5 boob shots plus some bush and a lot of re-animated corpses. Every horror fans dream come true. On a scale of 1 to 5 with 1 being an A-list Hollywood film and 5 being the cheesiest film of all time, I give this one a 2.

The title of the piece speaks for itself as I announce that the Revolver Golden Gods Awards show just got a little more badass as Revolver Magazine just announced that Glenn Danzig and his solo band, Danzig, was announced as a performer. The Golden God awards is the one award show that is strictly for us metal fans and they have catered to us over the years with great performances from some of today’s great artists. We have seen artists like Alice Cooper, Marilyn Manson, Fozzy, Asking Alexandria, Volbeat, Devildriver, and we’ve seen special performances like Avenged Sevenfold playing Mouth For War with Vinny Paul, Sebastian Bach playing with Asking Alexandria, Dee Snider coming out to play with The Black Veil Brides, and so much more. The event is awesome and Doyle from The Misfits is going to perform with Danzig in a night that already features Metallica, Stone Sour, Five Finger Death Punch, Anthrax, The Dillinger Escape Plan, and Halestorm. The event is going to be broadcasted on AXS TV, Facebook, and XBOX Live on May 2, 2013. If you’re a metal fan, then you do not want to miss this one.  Here’s one of my favorite Danzig songs to pump you up:

I couldn’t resist doing an album of the week on one of my favorite up and coming bands that is just blowing up. Ghost B.C. which is led by it’s fearless leader Papa Emeritus II, the band is gearing up to release their brand new venture entitled, Infestissumam, which means hostile in Latin on April 16, 2013. In my opinion, this is a highly anticipated release and that is the reason you are getting three album of the week reviews in one week. Somethings in life just supersede everything else that is going on in the rock world.  So, hopefully, you enjoy my review on the brand new album.

ghostInfestissumam Per Aspera Part 1 starts off the record and in typical fashion, the track sounds as if you are attending a mass of the satanic church that just started with the chanting followed by the band kicking in before it leads to the next track Infestissumam Per Aspera Part 2 which is high octane powered classic metal. Papa’s vocal’s are top notch on the track and I think he is an amazing vocalist plus the harmonizing on the chorus is amazing as well. Secular Haze has that organ intro that makes you believe you are entering a dark carnival and when the band kicks in it’s 70’s hard rock at it’s finest. Giggalo is the next track and it’s one of the most hard rocking tracks that these guys put out. It’s upbeat and it kicks ass. Ghuleh/Zombie Queen was the next track and it started off real slow with a creepy guy whispering Ghuleh. It’s 70’s rock ballad cheese at it’s best, but it’s actually pretty clever almost like a love song to the Succubus. At just about the three minute mark, the song starts to speed up and they proclaim their love to the Zombie Queen in a very surfer rock manner. Year Zero starts off with more of the church like chanting and it even continues when the band kicks in. I feel that the band is taking a lot more influence from the Blue Oyster Cult and I think BOC wishes they wrote tracks like these back in their heyday.  They even include my favorite word in the lyrics (Crestfallen) which I discovered one day on Thesaurus.com

rock

Artwork From Inside The Album

Body In Blood is a big riff, hard rock charging song with a very classical style intro that is a song about enticing the son of God to the dark side.  Idolatrine is a rock song with a little bit of a punk flare to it. Depth of Satans Eyes is a decent rocker with swagger on the album that has an 80’s metal feel to it. Monstrance Clocks has that creepy cult guy feel to it where he sings with no music in the beginning and when the music kicks in it’s doom metal heaven that would make Black Sabbath happy.  I love the guitar solo in the song because it even has a creepiness to it which is exciting. The end of the track makes you feel as if the mass was over as everyone sings together in harmony as you prepare to leave. If you get the deluxe version of the album then you will get the ABBA cover, I’m a Marionette, which features Dave Grohl on drums and it’s amazing and worth extra buck. So, overall I think the record is definitely a step up from the last one. The band is really gelling together real nicely and the music kicks ass which is very important. I am going to give the album 4.5 stars our of five.

I remember the first time my oldest brother Lino bought the album Sonic Temple by The Cult, we were on our way to the Azores (Portugal) to visit family and we knew that it was going to be impossible to find anything in the Azores to listen to. I think I was six years old when he bought it, but I remember the fact that Fire Woman had amazed me to the point that I was hooked. I must have hit rewind a thousands times on my cassette player just to listen to that. This was the fourth release for the British rockers and it was the follow up to Electric (which is also an amazing album). It was the last album to feature long time bassist Jamie Stewart and the first to feature former Hall & Oates and Bryan Adams drummer Mickey Curry and of course Billy Duffy on guitars and Ian Astbury on Vocals. The album cover features Billy Duffy posing with his guitar as he obscures a picture of Ian Astbury in the background. The album was produced by rock mastermind Bob Rock who literally has the King Midas touch. Just look at Metallica and Motley Crue for example.

File:The Cult Fire Woman.jpg

courtesy of wikipedia

Sun King kicks off the album with it’s hypnotic guitar intro that leaves you weaving around like a snake before the song just explodes into a pure rock and roll classic. Ian Astbury’s vocals remind you of a bluesy Jim Morrison. Fire Woman was the bread and butter of this album as it reached number two on the Modern Rock Track charts back in 1989 and it was the first single released from the album. The track starts off much the same as the first track with the amazing intro before it kicks off on a hi-octane ride that you’ll never forget. This is one of the songs where Curry’s drum ability really shines through on the record. American Horse starts off a little different than the previous tracks, but it’s one hell of a blues rock song that has swagger.

File:Edieciaobabycover.jpgEdie (Ciao Baby) is the next track on the album and the song stems from Ian’s trip to New York when he was recording the Electric album. He was reading stuff about the fashion scene in New York and he became obsessed with the Velvet Underground and the Factory. So, if you didn’t guess it, the song is about Edie Sedgwick who was a tragic figure of the Factory era. The song starts with acoustic guitars and an orchestral background before it the electric guitars and drums kick in. The two elements blend in so flawlessly together as he sings the tragedy of Edie. Sweet Soul Sister starts off with the keyboards before Duffy chimes in on this straight up rock and roll track about Black Panther Angela Davis. Astbury’s vocals on this track are so full of soul (no pun intended) and the track is so bluesy especially in the breakdown when Stewart plays a funky bass line. New York City is a harder faster song with a punk flare and it’s no wonder when you have Iggy Pop singing backing vocals on the track. Automatic Blues is a balls out blues track that reminds me of Aerosmith’s Love In A Elevator.  The start Soldier Blue has that real punk beginning to it that reminds me of something cheerleaders would want to listen to. I don’t actually know if cheerleaders listened to that, but it’s the first impression I got from it and I don’t know why. Wake Up Time For Freedom is another rock classic from The Cult and even though it’s not as amazing as Fire Woman, Astbury’s vocal abilities and Duffy’s guitar playing combined really make the song pop. I think everyone in 1989 was messing with the blues instead of what they were usually putting out as we heard Cinderella do it with Heartbreak Station and so The Cult do it in the beginning of the song Medicine Train. The song opens with a harmonica and some twangy guitar.

Overall the album sounds amazing and that shouldn’t be a surprise since it was produced by Bob Rock. Rock seems to get the best out of every band that he works with especially during this time period. He had just finished working with Motley Crue for Dr. Feelgood and a year after this he was working with Metallica for The Black Album. This was by far my favorite album from this band and it’s been a hard album to beat in my opinion. I’m not saying The Cult hasn’t released anything good because Choice Of Weapon was a return to form in my opinion. I also feel that The Cult doesn’t get enough credit where credit is due. I am giving the album a grade of four stars out of five for 1989’s Sonic Temple.

File:Iron Maiden - Somewhere in Time.jpg

I’m not sure exactly how many people were a big fan of this album and what the initial reception was because I was only four years old when the album was originally released. As a child with significantly older brothers that were into metal, I could name the beast on the album cover because we shared the same first name, but I couldn’t name any of the members at the time. I remember it was the summer of 1990 and I went with my mother to a flea, hoping that she was going to buy me something cool. Instead of wanting a toy at the age of 8, I asked her to buy me three cassettes. She bought me Kiss’s Asylum, Motley Crue’s Dr. Feelgood, and Iron Maiden’s Somewhere In Time. I was a huge nut for Motley Crue (believe it or not) when I was a little kid, but there was something about this album that just amazed me when I placed it in the tape deck.

The Full Album Cover

The album was a little different for Iron Maiden in that it was the first time they had used synthesizers and it was the first album with Bruce Dickinson that he didn’t have one song credit to his name. Bruce, I guess had written some acoustic versions of songs that ended up getting rejected by the rest of the band during the writing process. The album is very notable for having full songs that were written by Adrian Smith, who wrote the albums two singles. It amazing too because the two songs he wrote were my two favorite songs on the album (Wasted Years and Stranger In A Strange Land)It was also the first album not to be released a year after the last one as Harris had stated that he wanted to band to be able to have time to do the record right. Sadly, Iron Maiden pretty much abandoned the album when it came to live shows only playing Wasted Years and Heaven Can Wait.

The artwork for the album is what really got me interested in buying the album because Eddie was made into a cyborg like hunter. The regular artist of the band Derek Riggs in my opinion made an album cover that could hold a diehard fan’s attention for a longtime as you found all of the goodies that were laid on the cover. I’ll give you a couple of examples. A banner with the words, “This is a very boring painting” is displayed backwards within the lobby of the Bradbury Towers Hotels International. This can be seen to the left of Eddie’s right leg. The last example is An Eye of Horus neon sign at the top of a building, is a reference to the song, “Powerslave”. Those are just two examples of many that can be seen and as an eight year old kid, it sure as heck kept me busy for a long time. One thing that I will say before I get into the songs themselves is that I felt that a lot of Iron Maiden songs were like history lessons and this album had an example of that right in it.

File:Stranger in a Strange Land.jpgAs I had stated before, my two favorite songs on the album were the Wasted Years and Stranger In A Strange Land. Wasted Years starts out with Adrian’s trademark intro riff that displays what a masterful guitar player he is before you hear it kick in to the song about how the last tour had brought so much baggage, but in the end it was a decision the band doesn’t regret. It’s a song that no matter how many times I hear it, I still enjoy playing air guitar to. Stranger In A Strange Land contains some real epic riffs from Smith and even though it doesn’t feature Harris’s galloping bass lines, his playing in the intro of the song is still amazing and it gets you in the mood to head bang. The track is about a man that gets frozen in ice only to be discovered 100 years later by other explorer’s. Caught Somewhere In Time is another great track that starts the album which features some epic riffing and some galloping bass. Sea Of Madness featured more epic and funky bass playing from Harris with an amazing pre-chorus and some blazing  power chords. Alexander The Great starts with the King telling his son to conquer more land for a bigger kingdom before it breaks into the very slow guitar riff with Nicko playing a cadence military style drumming.  Then the epic guitar playing comes in before the madness begins. It’s a great history lesson from the professors.

Deja-Vu starts the same way as Alexander The Great did without the intro and military drumming. It’s a song that is about exactly what the title suggests, feel like you’ve been here before? Heaven Can Wait  is another epic song about realizing that you’re slowly dying, but you fight death because you refuse to die and their’s a part after the chorus that just makes you want to chant along with Maiden. The only song I was never crazy for was The Loneliness Of The Long Distance Runner because I never felt a song about track was cool enough for Metal. Overall, I give this album a final grade of 4 stars out of 5 as this was the last album from Maiden that I enjoyed from beginning to end until A Matter Of Life And Death.
